hi,

I have a 2014 black edition avant tdi 150 that's done 7,000 miles and the front tyres are already done to 4mm and the tears are 7mm. I drive mostly back roads and occasionally the motorway and won't say I was an aggressive with the
Car. I have checked the tyre pressure and running 35 front and 33 rear. It looking like I will get just over 10,000 out of them. My old a3 black edition got 18,000 out of a front set. I do notice that I can easy wheel spin the fronts pulling out of junctions. I am running contis all round.

What are you guys getting out of your front tyres?

hi,

It is that time of year also, wet roads with diesel and grease being a main problem. My last car and this car are 36 front and 34 rear, never had a problem yet.

Interesting as my tyre pressures were 42 psi after I bought it. Lowered to 32 around. Is that too low?
I thought this was to blame for hard ride but I think it's the shockers

7K miles with 4mm/7mm sounds like a lot of wear to me. I got those depth on 17K miles.
Could be the rubbish roads though. Back roads can be rough full of potholes.

Depends on the tyre really.I used to get 8k out of some conti sportcontact 2's on my b7 on the front. The softer the tyre compound, the quicker they wear.

Seems some difference in the stickers on the doors.
Mine is 38 F 35R.
I found 38 too hard and dropped it to 36.
Tyres seem to be wearing evenly being a Quattro

I've had 2 sets of conti 3s on my S4 since new and have only got 9000 miles out of each set, my winter dunlops have been used over the last 3 winters and still have plenty of tread left on them. I'll be changing back to summers next month and will either go for goodyears or dunlops to see if they last any better.
I will say that for grip in the wet and dry I am impressed with the continentals but I was hoping that they would last a bit longer.

I had Goodyear asymmetric 2 on my last car which had done 10,000 on them when i sold it, with plenty of trend still left for the next owner....lol ;)

i find the B8 to have shocking tyre wear i believe it was just the way Audi set the car up (so i was told)

I don't know about our current A4 but when I previously had a B8 Avant 143 from 2008-2012 I got around 17k from the front set, almost 35k from rears

My A5 however needed its first set of boots at 6 months old, but that was with almost 24k, something I'm proud of! Especially having a CRDT+ box fitted! Helps doing 195 miles a day up and down the M40 I guess!

I must be driving like an old fart ... I know I don't have an Avant and I mainly do motorway miles but I got 30K from my first set...

Must be the bad roads around where I live eating my tyres. Either that or i pushing the car harder then I thought. Fingers crossed I can get over 10,000 before I have to replace them. Got more miles out of a set of front tyres on my mk2 Seat Leon Cupra.....

Do you think its worth getting the front wheel alignment checked to see if the alignment is out?

I'd say that it can't do any harm, extending the life of the tyres by spending on this will be far cheaper than early replacement

where would you get the alignment done. audi or somewhere else?

Robbe - let me know how you get on.
I am seeing the same issue on ours - 6300 miles and down to 3.5mm on the fronts and 5.5mm on the rears.

I figured it could be due to 3 things:
- Very soft compound of the Contis
- Audi Hill Assist
- The fact that the car does about 5 miles of stop start traffic in a town centre most days.

No matter, not very impressed, and the dealership were about as helpful as when it was in there at the start of January. I've now swapped them over front to back and left to right so I can try to eke more out of this set, but I'm definitely not going to replace with Contis (considering going back to my favoured Michelin Pilot Sports).

****** hell that's some mileage, do ever get out of it.

Wouldn't do any harm, especially how bad our roads are!
They recommend doing the wheel alignment every two to three years or when new tyres are fitted.

Getting the wheel alignment done by Audi for £99, as the car is going in to have its windscreen replaced, so all the work is being done at once. They requested that the car has a full tank of fuel, and that before they do the alignment they make sure all the fluids are top up and at their maximum. Will let you know what the outcome is.

They did say that the contis were soft and only seeing about 12,000 out of a set of fronts, was thinking about getting a set of Goodyears next

The Conti sport contact 3's on my S4 lasted 8k miles, which is quite frankly appalling.

Mostly A & B road stuff and no silly antics, yet the wear is horrendous. Car was new and had a 4 wheel alignment done at 5k miles.

Am replacing them with PSS, and will be having a 4 wheel alignment carried out at the same time.

Today the car went in to have a new windscreen and the 4 wheel alignment. The front left toe was slightly out and they tweaked the rest slightly. So will see what that does for the handling. Front tyres are now 3mm on the left and 3.5mm on the right. So will be needing new tyres well before 10,000. Asked if this was normal and the said yes. Have seen cars needing new tyres after 8,000 miles. Think the tyres are soft and the bad roads have eaten the tyres up. I was given a 64 plate a4 black edition salon with more miles then my car and it's front tyres were low on tread, but the feel of the car was better then mine. Not sure if my issues are down to having the lower s line suspension. Just have to see how things go.

Just put my summers back on with new Goodyear Eagles. Hopefully they will last a bit longer than the contis.
Just for info I had all four supplied and fitted, 255/35/19 96Y XL, for £610 which I thought was a bit of a bargain.

After just over 8,200 miles I've replaced the fronts with Goodyear Eagles f1. The difference is night and day. So glad to see the back of the contis. only done about 50 miles on them but noticing no pulling or skittishness from the front end.

Every performance car I've owned has had a 4 wheel alignment check on the same day as the service, not always by the service gargae but usually via tristed inderpendant. It keeps me safe in the knowledge that the car drices as it should and that tyres wear evenly.

Rs4 is being serviced for the 1st time Tues AM, 4 wheel alignment booked in for check/adjustment Tues PM.

Although I'm not a fan of my current Parelli's I can't justify changing 265/30/20 tyres afer 4000 miles, I will however swap them for Conti's when the time comes.

Hi all,
i`m putting this up just as an alternative for the guy with the A4 tdi as i understand you guys in the S4`s & RS4`s want something more but when my original Conti`s had run off at around 26000 miles which i didnt think was bad i checked out numerous tyres and prices and was stunned at how wide the range is, obviously youve all the premium brands, run flat, self sealing etc but i got to wondering what it was i really needed on my 143 tdi totally standard A4 avand black edition and settley for extra load with a speed rating of 186mph, something most of us will never achieve, i admit stopping distance in the wet is slightly longer but again normal driving by a normal person, are you really going to notice so the conti`s etc were well up towards a grand, the Infinity eco max i fitted on each corner cost a total of £304 fitted and balanced. i was dubious it has to be said but at that price i thought id give them a go, what a revelation there quiet, grip well and now with 11000 miles on them in a year there still 5mm on fronts and 6 mm on the rears.
so if you dont need to read Contisport on the sidewall of your tyres when you wash them and your not doing mach3 on your way to work everyday there are alternatives that do the job every bit as well

Agree there are cheaper options but don't go too cheap...

:)

I agree that you don't need the increased ratings for the more standard models but you should never scrimp on tyres. Engineers spend 1000's of hours testing, designing and creating good tyres and this is were the money goes, don't scrimp, always by quality as its the only thing that connects, your car, you and your family to the tarmac and that contact patch is 4 x a standard postage envelope in size. The other thing that gets me is "tyre stretch", tyres are not design to stretch in the manner that some guys make them, again, outside of the boundries of the engineering put into the product in the 1st place.

I would never fit a cheap tyre to any car, even a cheap car, its just not worth it and will put youa t risk.

p.s. I worked in the Automitive design industry for over 20 years and have seen the engineering that goes into every part of the vehicles we drive.

OK, so don't shoot the messenger here, but there is potentially an insurance implication with tyre speed ratings too.
If your car was supplied with Y rated tyres for example, then fitting a lower speed rating is a get out clause for your insurance company if the worst were to happen. OK, so a V or W rated tyre on a 143bhp TDI is never going to be anywhere close to it speed rating in reality, but if it isn't original spec. there is your get out clause. If it ain't on your door sticker - check with your insurer !

Guys,
im not suggesting anyone scrimp on tyres, the tyres fitted to my car are Y rated extra load with all the relevant E numbers etc etc and conform to the original spec infact im not sure if yhe conti`s it took off were extra load all im saying is in reality when your getting less than 10,000 miles from your all singing all dancing tyres that are costing you a fortune there are alternativesas i said i appreciate that you lads with the S4 and RS4 may feel comfortable with the premium brands it maybe isnt that cost effective on a lower powered car
On Tyreleaders website the comparison between Cont sport contact3 and the infinity eco max for a 255/35/19 are the same 96y xl Fuel is E for Eco max and F for Conti GRip is C for Eco max and B for conti and noise is B for eco max and C for Conti but there`s 100 euro per tyre difference

Fair do's, sounds like yours tick all the boxes :thumbs up:
My S4 has Conti SC3's on (from new) and they are not great. Tramline like a mofo.
Just wanted to highlight the speed rating/insurance issue though, which sometimes gets forgotten (especially by a lot of tyre fitters !)

@Drew Baby was not having a pop at you. If I feel the tyre can do the job I'm all for it. The thread I linked to was meant as a bit of fun about what happened on my B7 with the super cheap tyres on. :)

Just some more ref.

I just hit 19k (minus max of @5k for winter tyres) they are Conti SC3's and have been rotated front to rear and they are all now @3.5mm, all evenly worn I might add. (my pressures must be correct)
I estimate they will make another 3k miles, so @17k for the set on a 3.0TDI, running F35 / R33psi.

So they done 14 or 15k with some life left, I don't think that's too bad considering the fun I have with my quattro, I do use the grip it has and sometimes I enjoy it when its not quite gripping.

Reporting back on personal experience.....

I swapped from the factory contis (managed to eek 8500 out of them in the end) and swapped them for Michelin PS3's back in May. They immediately transformed the ride comfort and also got rid of the awful tram lining that it was suffering regularly. From a grip perspective, they're pretty much on a par with the contis, and I think that in wet weather they're marginally better in fact.

Wear wise, they are night and day ahead. I have put another 5k on the clock since they were fitted, and they've still got 6mm left all round - so no increased wear on the fronts this time round. Driving behaviour has not changed since fitting them, so I can only assume that the soft compound in combination with town driving for 50% of the miles causes them to wear quite rapidly.

Curious to see what the grip is like as it gets colder, but the increased tread depth should at least help if we get some of the white stuff later in the year.

I found the SC3's rather useless for grip under 5C, very easy to step the rear out. Winter tyres are the real answer, but they still seem to be an enthusiast only thing in the UK.
