15Degrees-North S3 turbo Race Car build

Ill check that out Alex although at the moment I only need a standard ECU now.

It's still in development, and obviously is very non-standard,and I'm hoping I'll be first to get a production model running on the car.
If it does everything it is capable of,it will be a superb piece of gear.

A lot more done this past weekend which culminated in the engine being fitted (finally) into the car :)

So lets start off with a pic of my CTS turbo boost exit pipe showing the standard one on the left.

Then these bad boys turned up :) Boy are they light!! They must be worth at least 3 seconds a lap ROFL

Next I decided to fit the flywheel diamond spacer and then fit the clutch

I love reading your updates - I just wish I had your skill, knowledge, and expertise!

I would have loved to fit all of my mods myself, but I can just about cope with topping up the oil.

Good luck with it all mate, it's coming along nicely... :)

Cheers for the comment. I really enjoy it to be honest and just wish I had more time. One of the best things I bought for the workshop was Elsawin 5.1 :) That's a god send if I am unsure on a procedure or torques etc.

I could quite happily build race cars and road cars everyday. We have plans for the team and will see where it ends up.

We have decided to make the cars ready for Class S by the way. This is the the new Team Trophy class of 250bhp/ton at wheels so for me that's around 380 ish at fly. Should be exciting! Currently we race at 200bhp/ton at wheels so it's quite a bit faster.

So some more pictures for you.

As part of this build I have refreshed the box and also fitted a Wavetrac diff but I forgot to post these pics so here they are now.

I bought £300 quid of Kukko tools just to do this Box! Getting the races out without them is a bitch. Heat and the right tool and they all come straight out.

12.jpg

To be honest the box was in very good condition but I changed all the bearings anyway. The bearings and seals cost over £300 too from Audi!

I drilled out the studs on my small pillar drill

Its a gorgeous diff to be honest. A nice piece of engineering.

Of course these have to be pressed in

All pressed in ready for the plate gear

New bearings on the diff. These were heated in the oven for 30 mins and just dropped onto the shaft. You can put the diff in the freezer but I did'nt bother.

Top job as usual... now the question everyone will ask you, do you want to recon my gearbox? :D :D

Now here is the thing. I took out every gear set and replaced every bearing on them. I took out all the races and replaced those using the heat gun and my new tools to pull them. I then set the shims (I had to buy over 30 of those in all the sizes from Audi)! on each one as per the Elsawin manual which includes refitting it all and measuring with a dial gauge etc and is quite complex to do and also very very time consuming.

The bearings and the seals from Audi were well over £300 for the lot! From start to finish it was about 12 to 14 hours work I guess including cleaning the parts correctly and also the diff bit. I visually inspected all the synchros too. Next time I could do it faster as I know the process now and I had not ventured inside one of these boxes before.

So when I see these boxes for sale fully recon for £700 I ask myself have they just split it, cleaned it and replaced the seals ;)

Yes I would be happy to do your box for you to that standard and we could agree a price.

Oh yes as I am running Air con delete I thought I would tell you what V belt I opted for. It's the 950 mm Dayco one. Ill post the part number for you all in case you want to lose the pump like me.

Hi im new to the forum and have spent the last couple of hours reading through your build from start to finish, just have to say its absolutely amazing and i admire the time effort you have put into this car. A very interesting read and i will continue to follow your progress.

Keep up the good work man :)

I had to rush this lot as I had it booked in at Jabba for wiring and mapping. Anyway I started to pipe up the catch tank from my IE plate. As you can see that's a JIC12 to JIC10 reducer to JIC10 pipe for the crank breather

DSCN0421.JPG

DSCN0422.JPG

DSCN0423.JPG

Here you can see my JIC6 line from the swirl pot to the rail and Sytec fuel filter. I actually changed this pipe route as I was not satisfied with it. You can also see the JIC10 Y block Im using for the breather system.

I have carbon wrapped my center console as a bit of refurb for the interior. Looks so much nicer than the ally eh..

DSCN0430.JPG

Now for my new THS intercooler. I have to say losing all the custom **** from this car and going back to standard (uprated) has been a joy. Now things just fit without me having to spend ages making brackets etc :)

DSCN0431.JPG

New brackets for it

DSCN0433.JPG

And then a new rad

DSCN0437.JPG

And fitted although still have to fit the subframe brackets on.

The car is now at Jabba having wiring done and mapping :)

So impressed with your knowledge.
Even more so with your attention to detail.

I'm Peterborough born but now live near Rockingham.

Attention to detail is what (hopefully) wins races :)

First time we have used them as a team so we will see. But yes we heard good things too which is why the car has gone there. My teammates Supa Copa was there last week being mapped. Generally I don't like people working on my car for obvious reasons :) But there are jobs that I can't do myself.

Snap!.....

Yours looks in very good nick, and mine looked pretty good too....

The above was 30 000 miles after a gearbox rebuild, with much the same parts list as yours, plus synchros and selectors.

Keep the updates coming....it's a great sight to see your car coming together so well.

Mine's in bits right now, spread from here to the Midlands and back.

this build is pure hardcore motorsport porn!!!
great job!!

I'm often in Gretton seeing the girlfriends mum, you don't live in Corby do you? I've used Jabbasport on my old S3 as they are very well known for the 1.8T engines.

Between Corby and Oundle.

Jabba showed me a very very nice HPA Haldex controller screen while I was there which I might buy as it is way better than mine :) I need to get some air jacks next.

Love reading this thread, the work you do is top notch would love to be able to do 1% of what you can I would have saved a fortune!

When does your season start and where will you be racing?

Glad you enjoy it :)

First race is March 29th on Snetterton 200 circuit. I am hoping Jabba will be finished next week because then I need to take it to AME for its series power test and then fit in a test day (or two). Lot's to do.

Calendar

http://www.team-trophy.co.uk/2015-calendar.aspx

Ive gone for a Race Tech Dash 2 pro for this year. The reason for that is although I LOVE the new LCD screens like the AIM MXG they are over twice the price and essentially present the same information. I want to see

Revs
Speed
Water temp
Oil pressure
Fuel level
Gear
Lap time
Best lap
Lap Delta

High and low alarms of above and most importantly the DELTA

The dash 2 pro also shows me the delta which is the most important readout as far as I am concerned and it also links with my go pro white so I can play with the vids and put telemetry on them like speed, lap times etc so should be fun editing the vids up.

Mods still do to on the car

Air jack kit
80 liter ATL tank (This will get rid of my twin tank setup which although works ok I can't run a fuel probe in it)
HPA programmable Haldex controller
New front AP grooved discs and bells (ordered)
Lightened pulleys or fluid damper (not decided yet)
A lighter clutch and flywheel possibly Sachs, Helix is a bit heavy
Different Backbox on the exhaust system to make it a bit more rorty

Short update.

The car is still in the shop (Not Jabba we ended going somewhere else) having the wiring done although the engine now runs. I have gone for the Revo Stage 2+ map with Linear throttle (This has been flashed already) and also their HPFP internal. I am supposed to be racing on Saturday so It's kinda tight at the moment!

I bought new Brembo endurance discs and PF01 pads for the fronts and EBC USR discs for the rears. I also got some nice Rota Grid wheels for my wets in Matt black (Pics soon) It's very hard finding ET20 on the shelf I have found! They all seem to be made to order with 4 weeks lead time minimum.

Yeah fired up first kick too :) 100psi oil pressure! Not sure what is normal on these, can't find it listed anywhere.

As long as there's pressure there's life...LOL

Likewise no idea of the actual pressure limits.....I've now decided against an AIM dash,as I've found something that will work better with the setup I'm going to be using, and the display I've chosen should display all of the data available via CAN-BUS as well,so it should be OK.

So sometimes delays work to your advantage....sometimes....

Anyone know the gear ratios of the 02Q KNZ 6 speed manual box? I need to input them into my Dash2 pro

So the car is mapped and running :) It has not been easy running a stock ECU with nothing on the car LOL as the ECU did not like it at all. BUT if anyone tells you it can't be done because

The comfort module is missing
The ABS and speed sensor are missing
The voltage control and standard lifter pump are missing
All of the interior wiring is missing
etc etc

You can tell them from me they are talking ****** :) You can get a stock ECU to work without all that **** on the car!

AME with Revo got it working. It's making 325bhp at the wheels now. I did refit the 07F plastic oil filter housing but as you know I run a 19 row cooler so I made up a nice ally plate with two JIC 10 fittings on it to replace the water cooled cooler. :). I was not happy running the 1.8t housing as that also has a PRV valve in it like my 07F pump in the sump does.

Here is a clip of it on AME's dyno near Silverstone.

When I get the car back Ill update with pictures. I am looking at fitting this soon.

You and me both buddy. I'm just trying to order that now :)

My dash is being wired in at the moment and using this dash (dash2 pro) I will be able to overlay dash clocks etc on my videos. Should be cool.

Great progress,and well done.

I know it's very unlikely given the series you race in,but if you ever have the need for it,the Syvecs ECU is amazing.

Other than that,I really want to know how you get on with the SQS shift.

I saw your mate in the Seat did well in the first race meeting, will you be able to give him some competition when you get going?:)

Yes I agree Alex and I will go to Syvecs this year as it will give me launch control :) I believe they now do a plug and play kit for the tfsi too.

Darren is in a dilemma re my car. I built mine all upgraded so it has been easy to push it up into S class as all it was for me was a map. For Darren to do it he needs to spend a lot of money as he would need a larger fuel tank, upgraded brakes, bigger intercooler, new turbo, engine rebuild and rods and then mapping.

I think for Brands on the 17th he will have the brakes done and the tank and also will have the copa sport map on it so that will put him around 210bhp/ton. Mine is bang on 245bhp/ton now so he will struggle :) Knowing him as my team mate he will not like me sailing off into the blue yonder and will have to get all the other stuff done :)

Brilliant.

You'll find it's a huge step forwards over the stock ECU.

I'd recommend speaking to Andy at Storm Developments,as Storm did the beta testing for the ECU on the TFSi,and fitted and programmed mine, with the aid of Ryan from Syvecs.

You get LC,multi-stage TC and ALS,plus WMI and nitrous control etc,and a host of other useful things for you like flat shift, and gear cut/blip etc.

Ok ive collected the car now :) I am off to Bedford on Saturday for first test day. It's making

312 bhp at the wheels
308 torque

Let's see how she goes with the new motor.
