I have Audi 57 plate 2.0 TDI Quattro and I want to increase engine performance. Standard 170 PS

Is it better to get a re-map or shall I just buy a tuning box?

And a generic remap can actually be better than a custom , all depends on how many coffees the mapper has had .

Ah ok, but when the car goes to the Audi garage for a service do they erase the map? Also will I need to let the insurance know if I do this map?

I thought the beauty of the tuning box was that it gives the user performance upgrade without leaving traces of anything ever being changed on the car?

There is that advantage with a tuning box, It isn't the best way to get the performance from an engine a map is .
You should declare any mod to the insurance company tuning box or remap.
It is possible that if you have it remapped and take it to the main dealers it could have the map overwritten with an updated one. But you could tell them specifically that it's mapped, on a 57 plate it's well out of warranty so they aren't going to care.
The tuning box achieves most of what a map does by putting extra fuel in. It does this by raising the fuel rail pressure to a higher level than would normally occur. If the car was mapped there may be an element of increasing the rail pressure but most of the extra fuel is added because the injector duration is extended,
Thus a tuning box potentially stresses the pump a bit more but usually they don't go over the design limits of the pump.
A map allows small increases in boost pressure to burn the extra fuel hence less smoke and also the chance to adjust the SOI timing and also adjust other parameters.

being a 57 plate its unlikely they will perform any software updates

Yes you do as its a modification. Plenty of companies out there though that insure modify vehicles, often for less than it would cost to insure a standard vehicle with a mainstream insurance provider

The 170 has the wonderful Siemens ECU inside. To get the best performance out of it you need to modify over 40 various maps inside. I know as I have a 170 myself :)

A tuning box won't give you the same overall performance or benefit from a well sorted remap.

Thanks Karl and rhyso,

Good explanations! My engine was the last of the pump diesel (PD) type.

I have used a TDI tuning box for a while until I started to notice to notice rough running with the car.

This got particularly bad and had it diagnosed with a failing fuel tandem pump and one of the fuel injectors was ********.

Even though on the tuning boxes it states that no harm is done to your engine I am scared to re fit the box incase it damages other engine parts...

Off course I can't say for sure it was the tuning box to blame-I could just have been unlucky?

I know for a fact that the 170PD engine has had a injector recal so maybe it was a problem waiting to happen(all 4 injectors were replaced during the recall in 2012)

So I'm thinking of doing a re-map.

Can anyone recommend me where to go? (Based in Scotland)
What sort of price can I expect for my car? (2.0TDI Quattro)

I do not recommend remapping or tuning this engine with the DPF still fitted, they are a recipee for disaster. I have mapped many, many of these engines, but all with DPF deletes and they make 215bhp with no smoke.

That looks good-so how much does it cost have it mapped?
Plus DPF internal delete cause I don't want it to fail MOT!

Ecotune in glasgow done my a3 170 Quattro a few weeks ago very happy with the job they done ;)

Hi Rick. Is that 215 ish at the wheels or flywheel?

If it's at the wheels do you think 220 at the wheels is possible or is that pushing it?

You can see by the table at the bottom of the dyno plot that the headline figure is calculated engine power and the measured power at the wheels was 184bhp at only 3400 rpm .
If you look at the dyno plot from a standard car it doesn't make it's 170bhp until past 4000 RPM. The headline numbers are not the thing that makes a remap good, the area under the curve and the increase in power in the midrange makes the difference.
Compare the dyno plot above with this superchips dyno plot for the same engine.

http://www.superchips.co.uk/curves/A4 2.0 TDI 170bhp.pdf

A standard engine makes 150bhp at 3000 rpm, the remapped one 200bhp . changes to the exhaust, possible intercooler etc can get you more power as can running on something like shell V power.

Not had a remap but have had a tuning box to my 140hp. Rough idle and juddering is what I had when cold. When warm it felt good, without lag but it sounded so noisy when cold which is embarrassing when in traffic with a bus stop next to you lol

Will a full exhaust system c this figure go up rick ?

Hi,
If you find you have any issues with insurance at all for either a re-map or a tuning box then please feel free to drop me a line.
Regards,
Dan.

Out of interest how much would a remap increase an average policy

We are starting to run out of fuel much above this figure. These figures are smoke free and I have a large number running like this with zero reliability issues. Whilst more is available, I'd recommend driving at this spec before you decide as they go very well!

DPF removal (off road use only......) and remap is £500 2wd £600 quattro

A lot of folk will be going back to petrol then! Well, city types like myself.

I'll get myself some no claims built up in that time, petrol's for the power I wanted were too high on the ins. (0 no claims)

Hi,

It's difficult to say as we are a broker, however as a rule of thumb what ever the percentage increase is on BHP over standard, you may see an increase of around this on the premium.

Again this is just a very rough guide, if you have a policy with us and would like me to check this out then please do PM me your details.

Kind regards,
Dan.

Pop along to this ;)
