Hello everyone,

This might be a very silly, open ended question...but here goes.

Have been thinking that the S3 could use a powertrain rebuild in the coming months. However, I've always wanted a mk1 / mk2 golf. So I was thinking about taking the powertrain out of the S3, rebuilding and implanting into the mk1/2 chassis while keeping 4WD.

Anyone seen this done before? I don't have the mechanical expertise to do the work myself (mostly because I can't fabricate). Here's the silly question - if I provided the donor S3 & mk1/2, how much would this end up costing? Like £5k or more like >£10k?

sounds expensive...perhaps sticking with 2WD would be best. Though I've always wanted a MK1 with full S3 running gear

surely you'd want to have full time 4wd not haldex?

you can get 1.8T lumps for silly cheap and then you need a Q-peng loom and down pipe. There was a pretty good article in practical performance car mag a few months ago.

Personaly id be looking to VRT a mk2 for similar money.

I know someone with a mk1 GTI with a bam engine and switchable boost from 225 to 300 bhp, the build cost him 8.5 k six years ago, it's still fwd, but the engine is forged, so some of the cost went on that.

For a Mk2 - it is best to go for a Syncro or Rallye version as these were 4 wheel drive as standard. There are people who have converted 2WD to 4WD by welding 4WD floor plan to a 2WD Mk2, which could be an option. 1.8T, VR6 or R32 engines are all options. Then you need to speak to these guys who can sell you all the bits to convert to Haldex!

Have fun!

Also forgot to add 16V (Turbo) - as in this >1000BHP Golf Mk2, which is a syncro body -
If you are good with the spanners, it should be relatively straight forward if you get the right floor plan Mk2 as you have all the bits from an S3. Lots of info on web on putting 1.8T into Mk2.

When I queried about going 4x4 for my mk1 quotes were around 6k just for the labour on the 4x4 conversion.

As above for that kind of money buying a Rallye or Syncro could make sense.

If you like mk1's then maybe 20vt one and see if you will use it in anger enough to warrant the cost of going 4wd.

Give CrazyQuiff's a call as they can give you an idea on the cost of it all.

Thanks everyone. Maybe indeed the best course is to 2WD 20VT a mk1 for now and then investigate further work after that

Hi

Im building one at the moment, and have been in a few.

Mk2 two with up to 250 bhp is a silly rapid car

Mk1 with the same power is very very quick, both need an LSD and not to mention good brakes.

Many parts available and SEM or OE management (via a conversion loom) options are all there.

My Mk1 will be under 800 kg i think so the bhp per ton will be nice.......

If you are good at fabrication 4 wheel drive is do-able but front wheel drive with a LSD is like any other VAG conversion with lots of the mounts, downpipes, intercoolers and exhausts etc. available off the shelf.

Hope this helps

K04 based engines seems to have a heavy tax applied on them - especially the BAM !!

I mean the price on the engine compared to a K03's based engine

Nice
I would go OE management if you have a car to break.

Trackslag have a good reputation at the moment for down pipes and exhausts.

Epytec do good brake conversation brackets and engine mounts.

Time for second silly question :)

If i were to do mk1, 2WD with the 20vt from my S3 - I would sorely miss the 6-speed if I had to get rid of it. But, correct me if I'm wrong, the mk1 tunnel won't fit the 6-speed from the S3, yes?

You would need to use the gearbox from a FWD car if you want to use a 6 speed 02M box... there are conversion kits available I believe to block up the oil holes once the transfer box is removed but its just as easy to sell the box you have and buy a FWD one tbh...

It won't be the tunnel thats an issue.. it will be the space between chassis members... most people fit the 02J 5 speed boxes... don't recall seeing a Mk1 with an 02M though...

Best bet is to ask on Club GTI as its all been done there

Ahhh tuffty, the font of all knowledge :)

Thanks, will have an ask around on there. Am really quite keen to keep a 6-speed box if I keep the S3 engine, so will have to have a think about what can be done

I am going with a 6-spd 02M from a LCR with mk1 02M mounts, I am not building the car though CQ is but the mounts seem pretty much spot on.

The link tuffty sent looks like it will do the job for removing your existing transfer box and I guess leave the door open if you want to look at 4wd later on.

No probs, not got a dedicated build thread but CrazyQuiff posts updates on his facebook page. Mines the 16vt build with abs.

He seems pretty sound about giving advice so depending on your location may be worth swinging by and having a chat about your plans or giving him a call sometime.

Yeah, might do, thanks mate. I'm looking at a mk1 rolling Shell now, so might give him a call and ask
