I suppose what goes really, it's the bearings that's gone in mine, steering an drive is normal but when on uneven pot holes roads it knocks like crazy. As is if all mounts are ******** on front end, not nice.

Thanks S3AEX tho!

I'll pm you mjr901

I've been quoted £470 today including fitting and hunter wheel alignment afterwards!
More money I really don't wana spend :sorrow:

Mine was like that as well.

Pretty sure the suffix is KX on the latest racks, that's what was fitted to mine.

When you source a new rack take it to a steering specialist as they'll fit it in a couple of hours, not 10+ hours that Audi quoted me.

You normally needs modified loom and software up date for these, also common for torque sensor failure

I

Hmmm so... I'm no mechanic but what do I actually need then? So far it's a steering rack, wire loom, and maybe a torque sensor? :-(

What year is your car? Chances are you may already have a gen 3 rack so the loom won't be required.

You can tell if it's a gen 3 by the number of securing bolts. Gen 3 racks have 3 bolts whereas the gen 1 and 2 had 4 if my memory serves me right.

Sorry to confuse

If you have a new rack they need coding to the car, they have there own ecu hence the loom, new steering rack depending on year of car= new loom

Also software up date required,

A lot of garages will not be able to code new rack just check where ever you have it done

How much is the loom then? I'm sure the garage doesn't know it needs the loom!

AFAIK Gen 1 needs a loom, Gen 2 & Gen 3 are interchangeable but have 3 bolts instead of 4, the latest rack is 1K2 423 055 J or JX if it is an exchange unit. If you do need the loom it is about £80.

Ok thanks lads. I'll possibly go with the garage then and let them sort it out. Cheers lads

hmm.. Im getting some knocking too.. and some vibration when braking from 40mph...
wheels where freshly balanced and aligned so its not that.
Havent had a chance to throw it on a ramp for a visual tho :(

2004 2.0TDI

This might be a dumb question, but will the later S3 rack as linked above fit to my 2004 A3 3.2 Quattro? I'm assuming I'll need the loom adapter as my car is an early one.

I'm pretty sure it does mate

Comp what are the exact symptoms of this problem?

The slower I go the worse the knocking!
It's not tooooo bad going up the bumps but when going down a bump there is a knock which sounds like the engjne is loose or something is loose under the bonnet and knocking! Small bumps like a rough road is Awfull
