As I seam to be on abit if a spending spree on the avant, can anyone recommend a clutch for the avf engine? Mine needs replacing before the remap but I can't decide whether to go for a smf conversion or stick with dmf, also are there any uprated clutches out there that will take abit more torque as not sure how a std clutch will fare after a map?

6 speed?
If your only planning on a remap a standard kit will hold with out any issues (providing the map isn't stupidly aggressive) any further tuning then I would recommend a Sachs SRE disc and pressure plate.

Rob.

I've been running a standard Luk clutch on my mapped AVF for the last 30k without issue.

If it's 5 speed and you've got a BV43 then as said SRE's best, could go SMF to save some cash but theirs a few horror stories out their. If it's six speed you shouldn't need anything too crazy.

I've also heard horror stories about smf conversion. As for clutches, I personally would upgrade the clutch paired with the bv43. Although ive read some people have got by with a new standard clutch. But they seem to hold back, which would make me worried to properly boot it haha

Its a avf 6 speed. I don't want it too aggressive but looking for close to 200bhp as poss. I know a lot of ppl say replace the flywheel also but as a mechanic myself we only ever change them if they have excessive movement

I burned out my new LUK clutch when running roughly 210bhp on a avf running a 240mm clutch in a ELN box, if going upto 200bhp I'd advise thinking of getting the SACHS SRE clutch fitted when the original gives up, I didn't replace the dmf till the death and only replaced it trying to rid a horrid shake I was getting through the driveline, which turned out to be the inner CV's from J&R that where 4 months old

I recently replaced my old clutch and DMF with a LUK ones. Currently running about 170 or slightly below in reality from an 'aggressive' REVO map. Hoping to go down the BV43 route at some point (have 2 SMICs fitted rather than one FMIC, although one isnt plumbed in yet) and from the other guys on here running about 200 bhp, they dont have any issues. Or so far anyway.....

I was having a lot of noise from what I thought was the DMF but after taking it out, found it was fine and it was the front aux idler and tensioners that were making the chattering noise. I even had 2 different garages tell me incorrectly that the noise was the DMF failing.

I did consider looking into running an S4 clutch (also a 240mm plate) but didnt get far on finding out if one would fit. Essentially it is capable of running 350 bhp so would be ideal for a 200 bhp diesel. I had a fishy feeling that the 6 speed box on mine may be the same as an S4 spec one but I couldnt find the markings telling me what type it was to confirm it.

SMFs have got a lot of bad press so I steered clear of those.

BTW, I have some pics in my Icarus Thread of me doing the clutch replacement and the PD170 intercooler if you are interested!?

Ah......not what I was hoping to hear!!!!

Don't get me wrong I was driving it hard, but if you take your car from 130bhp to 210bhp your not doing it so you can potter around all the time, I managed to get 11mpg on the dash when I took my mate out and the clutch burned up, after that it slipped at peak torque untill I put it back to stage 1 where it held again.

When I got the clutch out you could see just how hot it got, it was all discoloured and glazed.

hi all. im new to the site. i have the A4 avant tdi 170 b7. i have just had it dyno remapped so now its at 210bhp. can anyone recommend a clutch & flywheel upgrade & were i can find one to buy. many thanx Phil

hi. when i first got it remapped it slipped, but the last couple of days its seemed to be ok. im thinkinking that if its started its only going to get worse

This Kit will be more than suffice. It also means you don't have to worry about future tuning until you see over 400ft/lb.

Rob.
That does not seem to be a Sachs SRE clutch, the price of the clutch from Sachs direct is over 500 quid on it's own, the flywheel is about 280 so you're looking at about 800 including the release bearing...

That website is basically darkside, so I'd assume that is a legit sachs kit, they can also supply quife diffs for a below average price.

The picture may not be of the exact items however I can confirm the kit consists of Genuine LUK flywheel, Genuine Sachs SRE clutch disc and Genuine Sachs SRE pressure plate.
The prices don't include VAT so total £828

Thanks Rob.

The fact that you don't mention a price is minus VAT has always put me off using any website that does the same.

I'm not the first to wonder about this, as I posted a link on bmw5 forum and the price was questioned then too, that is unless you only deal with trade?

Ok then, that's the catch, no VAT...

As above, i bought SRE kits before and cost me over 500 for the clutch alone without release bearing... I also buy stuff from Darkside regularly and know they sell quality gear but could not be that cheap, prices without VAT as mentioned by Rob...

Unfortunately customers outside the EU seem to be put off by prices including VAT. We didn't want to exclude that market so opted for Ex VAT prices.

I have a couple of questions that I need a little help with lads.

I'm planning on changing my clutch and dmf on my A3 8P2 1.9tdi. I'm wondering if there's anything else I should change while I'm getting that done? I've read some things about pressure plates and some bearings etc. but not too sure lol

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply John. I been reading about changing some main seal or something, any advice on that?

Also when I change my clutch and dmf I will be putting in an oem dmf and clutch, will a standard oem clutch be able to handle stage 1 power? Or would you recommend a different clutch?

I guess they mean the rear crankshaft oil seal, which is behind the flywheel (DMF) The thinking is as you've stripped it down that far, might as well replace anything in that area, not certain if these seals fail on a regular basis on this model!
I think the standard clutch would handle a stage 1 power increase.

I'm an absolute lost case when it comes to complex car parts haha I was thinking the same way that if I'm there I might as well do the little bits too, but that's great help John I really appreciate it mate :)
