Hi Guys,

So I have owned my A3 for just over 4 years and I'm looking to move onto an A5 Sportback... have a baby on the way (due in a couple days ) and I'm looking for something different.

now i have loved my A3 since the day i got it and no expense spared on maintaining it and upgrading it. Most of you here know my car well and for those that don't can have a read on my blog (link in signature) to see what i have done (not properly up to date)

Thing is that after everything i have done to it, i have also put on a few miles on the clock and I'm wondering do i try to sell it as it is or do i strip it down to a standard-ish car an sell it and then sell on the parts?

The car is clocking up to.... wait for it.... 219,000 miles! its been properly maintained and serviced it every 8000 miles, has had a stage 1 clutch and flywheel and a hybrid turbo fitted (July 2014) but I'm afraid that a new buyer won't appreciated it. The car still drives solid and people that have been passengers in the car don't believe that its done that many miles as its still going strong.

I've asked friends and its mixed advice so far so I'm asking you guys to give me your responses. You can see the list of mods i have done in my sig so now do i strip it or sell as is?

Hey Ash, what year is your car bud? looks lovely in that last picture on your site.

Where did you get your grill also please mate? Think that would suit my silver S3 perfectly? :)

Ah ok, well ive just seen on this site you can get them but they dont look half as good as the face lift models if you ask me!
Yours looks the tits tho!

Facelift = http://www.xenonz.co.uk/audi-grills.html
Pre Facelift = http://www.xenonz.co.uk/audi-a3-to-rs3-05-08.html

I think id want chrome on mine as my cars silver, and i dont personally like the look of the 4 rings bracket as it solid, where as the facelift model has mesh in between which looks better imo!

yeah that seller has loads of grills which look half decent but they have their flaws, you can't quite get close to OEM without getting the real thing.

I'm inclined to say strip it and sell parts separately

With that age and mileage if you try and sell with mods I guess you'll be asking 10k ish? I don't think anyone would pay that unfortunately

With a modified car you're in a smaller/unique market compared to someone looking a standard A3 TDI and may not pay the extra premium of the mods fitted.

Try selling it with the mods for a few months. If you do decide to strip how far would you go? Would you swap you 8P3 S3 front end excluding the rs3 grille, for my 8p2 S3 front with a fair amount of money your way.

I would advise to strip the car as selling with my mods , people won't appreciate the value of the mods which will come with the car.

I had my astra astra SXI with VXR conversion mods , stripped everything to the alloys and sold the car for the price on the market with 120k on the clock.

The mods got me back most of the money :)

I think I'd want some parts , tempting lol

I'm in a similar situation to you, young family so car needs having to change, so after receiving silly offers for my car (rx7 fd) I decided to strip for parts, which has resulted in me make a lot more than if i was to sell the car complete and allowed me to upgrade my daily drive a3 sportsback. ( I sold the mazda engine, gearbox and a couple of interior trim parts for what I bought the car for alone) Most car buyers rarely appreciated additional modifications car enthusiasts do to their car and if the mileage is over 200k then the people looking for an a3 in the price bracket you'd be looking for your cracking car could be put off with this mileage. ( even though we know audi engines are capable of very high mileage). Like someone else said, no harm in testing the water and trying to sell complete for the price you want then if you have timewasters offering £1000's less than the cars true value with mods, then you can always strip and sell upgraded parts and return car to original and sell for market value. I would however make sure you have buyers in place with deposits taken for the expensive parts before you do start stripping car so its not costing you to return car to standard and get rid of it quickly, especially if baby is due soon.

If you do go down the stripping route, I would be interested in some parts, so please keep me in mind if you do.
Thanks!

I knew a few of you would be interested in the parts... I can't blame you either since I have done a lot of good mods.

In all honesty I was thinking if someone came and offered me £7k I'd let it go, £10k is a bit overpriced in my eyes even though there is a lot done to it.

if I was to strip it I would probably just strip out the mods and sell the car as a face lifted a3 with a more basic interior... I probably won't be bothered to take off the S3 front and rear brakes, the hybrid turbo or the front end since its a lot of work and I would need to replace those parts to sell on the car which essentially is cutting back into the money I would be making from stripping it.
I basically don't want to start stripping the engine so would look to sell the car as a whole item just less mods in it

Good luck with it @Ash187 , hope the A5 world suits you. Oh and the vultures are definitely circliing :)

That RS3 grill would look very nice on my S3 though ;)

Like many others, i'd be interested in a few parts.

That front end is damn tempting haha

You can have my bumper lol

But as above test the water , hopefully someone is out there.

I'm also planning to get an a5 sportback/ A6 or a BMW 3 series (undecided) end of this year after I tie the knot

The a3 will go the MRS to be in August that's if she wants it over her peugeot lmao for , I've asked her but she's like NO I don't want it , I want a better car ???? ? What is she saying ??

Yeah i said the same to my wife... she said "i'd love to have an Audi but your one is too Manly"...
i have no idea what she is on about and where she thinks she will get a 'girly' Audi from apart from the A1 or TT which both are too small for a pushchair.

I said that il take the tints off , but still a no.

They think they will get the whole world into the 'girly' audi , people , pram , shopping , children lol

They just don't think long term

Wife doesn't like the red stitching on the centre triangles and door armrests... doesn't like the red ambient foot wells... says if it were pink then it would have been better :puke:

Then she says she doesn't like the flat bottom wheel and its too fast and powerful :keule:

I just gave up and decided to sell after that, with that attitude she doesn't deserve the Audi.

I think because of your rep on here Ash you would be able to strip it out & sell to get most of your money back...
Nobody will appreciate the amount of work you have put into it because of the mileage unless you let it go for stupid money, which would be.. stupid. (unless time is not on your side)

Sure your parts would be snapped up in no time.

Right I need to get hold of another car... Could just drive the wife's Toyota while I find myself an a5.... Looks like I may as well strip it

Baby should be here in the next couple days so once things calm a bit il probably be back with a parts list

Ash, I know we've spoken about grilles before - if you decide to strip, drop me a line?
Guess I'm lucky, my fiancée loves the power and looks and has a tendency to bait Boxsters, 911s and any "yoot" in anything remotely pokey!

With that amount of miles I'd go with stripping it to get a bit of your money back.

I've been driving my other halfs 1.1 206 whilst trying to sell my shed, it's horrible to downgrade so much but needs must. Hope all goes smoothly with the baby!

So I'm not exactly sure how im going to do this as I will need some replacement bits
eg. If I sell the grill I need another grill on the car, same for heated interior, folding mirrors, TTRS steering wheel etc.
I'm still trying to work out what I should sell separately and what I should sell with the car as a whole.
Since I have heated front and rear half leather, half alcantara seats of which the fronts are from the a5 but all ready to go into the A3... I'm thinking maybe sell on the door cards too, the heated seats wiring and the rear switches and front climate control as a whole bundle? That way buyer can fit the lot and just fit it? I'd replace it with a cloth set I have spare but would anyone buy the car with the s3 facelift exterior and a basic cloth interior?
Confused.com!

Strip and sell / part ex all the interior mods and leave all the mechanical stuff on unless someone is willing to pay to swap the stuff over onto their car

A standard(ish) car will sell 10 times more quickly than a modified one :)

I'm not selling the front end. At least with the s3 kit on it, the 19s and S3 brakes il be able to sell the car for a reasonable price. Plus it will have the hybrid turbo with the custom map on it so it will still be a decent car for buyer.
The grill will be up for sale soon though

Ash I could be tempted to PX my perfect 2012 FBSW for yours, and grille is definitely wanted. Let me know.

Wife gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl at 6am this morning (3rd feb) so I will be a bit busy over the next couple weeks... Will be coming back with a parts list of sale items soon!
