S3 to RS3 should I?

I must admit I enjoyed the cheap running in the last S3 and while tempted to mod, was not willing to remap it, as my tuner advised the 8P manual clutch would not cope like the 8L did, and I should budget a clutch if I remapped it. I just wasn't willing to put a clutch in such a low mileage car.

With the RS, the standard performance, retaining warranty and fact you have to physically remove and split / open up the ECU on the bench to unlock it, all leaving tell tayle tamper marks before a conventional remap has helped control the modding urge.

I can totally understand that, and it makes more sense probably than my approach, which did start off well intentioned, with the idea of not doing anything, and then rapidly went downhill when I found this place and VAGOC.

Buy it Marshy ! You may never get the chance again.

BUY BUY BUY the new RS3 when it arrives might not be any good and will cost a fortune.

Okay scratch that it will just be a fortune and put it right into a good second hand rs4 territory. I know what I would rather have.

I do love the RS3 but before I'll even consider to get one I will wait to see how well they tune. As said previously ECU needs to be opened, and already a few threads on propshaft bolts not being strong enough for even it's launch control. This is why I don't bother buying cars that are too new.

4.0 twin turbo TFSI is where I want to be , when prices drop like a boat anchor..

The RS4 just didn't feel fast, and missed the urgency of a turbo. I think I'd get bored pretty easy after the new car feeling had worn off. Even with Thors gravely snaffles from the exhaust in sports mode on downshift.

However, the RS6 / RS7 that is another beast.... f me I want one.
I don't need it, I WANT it.

560bhp and 700 Nm is adequate :D

I think exactly the same with the RS4. It needs a charger. Sounds amazing, strong muscle stance, but lacks super car power.

Well I think a road test may be on the cards today.
Settle it one way or the other.

Good luck and let us know what you think of it.

Yeah let us know how the test drive goes. Would love to hear how it compares to the stage 2+ s3!

Well I've test driven it
It's very nice and goes pretty well!
It's definitely quicker away than my S3 from a standing start but that maybe down to dsg and mine manual.
It sounds lovely and does feel somewhat different to mine. Once on the move in say 3rd gear my S3 is noticeably quicker but with the weather so bad today I couldn't properly test it.
After nearly a 20 mile road test I returned and could happily of done a deal if the change price wasn't so much.
Yes I loved the RS3 but Whether I could live with it standard is another matter.
Anyway to move up 2 years from my S3 it was going to cost me £16k and I don't feel it's £16k better than what I have.
Yes selling all my mods would raise about £2k but I feel it's too much money to pay for the same 8P chassis.
I'll keep modding my S3 and carry on enjoying it as I'm not ready to give up the modding bug yet.
Wish I'd done this days ago then maybe I'd of slept at night instead of thinking should I?

Good to hear your opinions!

£16k is a hell of a lot of money to move to the same model IMO.

I think I would rather have a new golf r or s3 with that kind of money.

I kind of expected that amount!
I was very pleased with the test drive but no like "I want it no matter the cost"
I think I'll be moving to a S3 8V in another year or so.

I for one am so glad your keeping your S3 as you can't leave us your my Tech Guru lol!!!!

TTE Turbo and your be eating RS3's for breakfast :arco:
Don't worry mate I'm staying
Just ordered a B12 suspension kit for my S3.
Not using the springs but the dampers will match my current setup.
My CTS turbo discharge and throttle pipes should be here next week too.
I feel much better now it must be spending money that does it.

Thank GOD!!!!! I was having a restless night knowing you could be leaving us lol!!!!!

Could not agree more with your reasoning as to go from a 8p to 8p and 16k deffo seems some what odd lol

I will indeed sleep better tonight knowing your still here! Plus I have a service to do probs tomorrow or day after so might need yet again your awesome skill set :thrashi:

I was kind of hoping you would draw this conclusion lol.

16k! That's another S3! No way is RS3 better by that much... Just no way.

Yeah spending half of that on my S3 would be another level.
It wasn't about the performance it was just something I thought I wanted but at that price it's an itch I can resist.
I like the members in this section of the forum too much to leave

A big turbo S3 on sorted suspension + brakes would probably equal or exceed the fun of an RS3 for less money and you also have the element of surprise.. ;) Glad you are staying

Isn't it all pointless, I only know of 3 roads you can open up on in the UK, then you can plod along at 70, had a focus st pass me the other day driving along known road for grey x3. its just not worth it. fire out the tail pipes, reckon he was going 120 in a 50 zone... just stupid

Very true, but then there are track days and Europe! Then there is something to be said for having easily accessible performance when an opportunity presents itself on a quiet back road with national speed limit.

Just to add - for many, myself included, just knowing what your car can do at very short notice is a bit of a buzz.

True easy to go round someone that is under the speed limit in a second, safely too. I always get a plane when I'm working in europe and don't have to drive anywhere

We all have the need for speed in our own ways. I like B road blasts and the odd track day.

It really would be insane mate to drop 16k to change, considering what you have now!!

Good choice.. The RS3 is an incredible car (having driven one myself) but for the money difference, i'm not sure its really worth it in your case. If you are anything like me.... a car doesnt tend to stay standard for long in my ownership, so I could never own a car under warranty or a car with astronomical tuning costs for average gains. I understand the RS3 makes incredible power on stage 1 and stage 2 tunes but like some one else said, warranty goes out the window and in my experience, A car thats been modded tends to break parts of itself which in turn need uprated to cope with changes the car has had. Its part and parcel of modding a car... I wouldnt fancy repair bills on an RS3.

You've everything and more you need to go hybrid now.... that should be your next step.. stage 3 power for a fraction of the cost of stage 3 kits.

On the subject of Stg3/4 kits....have you seen the price of the APR big turbo kit for the TT-RS?

Aside from being a bit of a wallet breaker,I can't help but smile, given Keith's estimates of what the eventual market price would be.....

Muzza are you after pro springs?

Wise choice with the depth gauge, I did exactly that, cant beat peace of mind.

I was but looking Eibach didn't list them as compatible for the RS3, in fact the only options I could find was H&R (not interested, too firm and the rear standard is perfect anyway) and Lowtec from Germany designed for the RS3, drop the front 25mm while retaining OEM spring rate like the Eibach for the S3. Ordered now anyway.

If you do get it, you have to get the milltek secondary cat delete pipes, cheap, doddle to fit, still meets emissions, no issue with warranty and they make the car sound so much better yet still very quiet in the car, cruising with the sport button off.

Let me know how it goes, you got a link to the car you're going to see?

Link dont work mate but I see 2 red and one daytona 100 miles from you?

If it's the red one in Stirling then be aware it's literally got nothing, no bose or anything although I'm guessing it's the Daytona Grey one? :)

I've looked at the Daytona one but this one is the red one at Newcastle.

The 3.0 v6 TFSI supercharged in the S4 appeals to be more than the RS3. I think thats what will replace my s3 sportback.

As some of you know I bought myself an RS3, really enjoying it so far.
Not bad chance to clean it myself yet but here's a pic after a quick wash today

There's not much in it.
With it being dsg and my S3 manual I'd say the RS3 is quicker 0-100 but my S3 felt quicker above that.
Early days yet as I've not had a proper play.
