Just been for a decent ride out in the car. Everytime I came to a stand still, I could smell exhaust fumes in the cabin. Once set off again the smell faded. The car doesn't sound like the exhaust is blowing, it's nice and quiet.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Most likely the exhaust manifold to pre-cat gasket have failed or the bolts are slack. Pull the cover and look for sooty marks around the turbo's downpipe...

My 1.8 Auto has a TURBO? :jester: I jest of course. As I'm new to the 1.8, any ideas on where this crankcase breather runs from or to please?

Cheers.

Thought you on about the b6 a4 tdi... Anyway, check the boot seal IF the exhaust has no blows....

Sorry for crashing the thread, but I have the same problem, so hopefully my suggestions may help.
I have a 1999 A4 B5 and if I have the heater on, I only notice the petrol smell when I stop at traffic lights. When I move off, it goes (sort of). I have had the front section of the exhaust replaced as it was blowing, so this did'nt cure it.

What I have noticed earlier today when I was tring to trace the smell, I removed the HT leads and noticed oil in the plug hole (sorry for the wrong lingo, I'm no mechanic). I noticed it in two of the spark plug holes and didnt check the other two because knowing my luck, the car wouldnt have started again, so I guess its the valve cover gasket that needs replacing.

Just another suggestion for you to check.

Yup. Valve cover gasket. Had the same issue on mine.

I still haven't got around to looking at this issue just yet. Work has been manic. I'm hoping to get chance on Sunday.

I'm leaning towards the rocker gaskets actually as this only happens once the engine is hot and there is a bit of fresh/wet oil on the block. I have just received a long, slim 14mm spark plug tool today as my current one won't fit in the deep holes. So I will pull the plugs on sunday to and do an oil service along with air filter and plugs,.

Well, it's +1 to Aragorn. The plastic breather has snapped in two places and the brass pin has come out. What a PIG of a job just to remove the old and check it and get part number, then try and fit again.

Intake pipe work off and alternator off. Is there an easier way? I'm not looking forward to fitting a replacement part when it arrives!!

The 1.8T you can tip the coolant reservoir out the way, and just reach down underneath the inlet manifold. Its awkward as hell but doable.

Not sure what the intake manifold is like on the NA engine though, i think its much bulkier.

Ordered a new Breather pipe today, it doesn't come with the 'o' ring and I don't think my car currently has one. So need to source the seal.

Then it's time to scratch and bruise my hands getting it all fitted! :-(
