I'm new here, and didnt want to hijack someone else's thread, so thought I ask this question to the "guru's"........

just bought a 2005 DTM, so my first job is having the pick up pipe, chain and tensioner done (not exactly cheap, but needed lol), and I was thinking about the pump as well. With regards to the oil pump failures, is it mostly just the chain letting go, or could I spend out on having the oil pump chain replaced, and still stand a good chance of having the pump give up?? I dont mind spending a bit of money as I got the car a bit cheaper than usual prices, but if I stretch to the pump chain as well, I'd be looking at a good £1k of parts and labour, and could still have the engine let go! So I may as well keep my fingers crossed and wait until my time is up if the pump can still fail even if its got a new chain.

thanks for your time, Im really just deciding whether its worth having the chain done while the blokes got the sump off!

chain and tensioner is a bit noisey, so wanted that done. Its at the beginning of its noisey chain life lol, but thought I'd nip it in the bud now. As for the pick up pipe, well I personally think its silly not to do it, I just was asking if while the guys in the area, is the pump chain worth it if thats what the problem is, rather than the pump itself

I would suggest it'd prob be worth replacing the sprokets, chain and tensioners if you are going to the trouble of replacing the pickup pipe. It's my understanding that its the drive to the balance shaft / pump assy. that causes the issue, whether chain related, tensioner wear or keyway problems - perhaps someone may be able to support / corroborate this ?

Just checked the prices on the invoice when mine was done in July last year:

Chain - £22.57
Sproket - £45.33
Tensioner - £30.88
Crank Sproket - £19.05 (all above exclude vat)

For your info - the oil pump balancer shaft assy - £940.79 (plus vat)

thanks a lot for the pricing lists guys.

thats about what I thought it would cost, which I can live with if its all for the greater good.

so in your opinion Giosabcsl, would you say that the majority of problems are caused by the chain and tensioner that runs the pump, rather than the pump itself?

(and I understand its just your opinion, and Im not asking for a warranty with your reply lol, would just like to know the general consensus)

Its hard to say to be honest. The most of the issues is the timing chain that drives the 2 camshafts and the oil pick up.

The chain that drives the oil pump is just like a free wheel bicycle chain. It is not under strain or tension even thou there is a tensioner or one for a better word the unit isnt really under a lot of load. And a lot of the Audi Specialist places I have spoken to have said they never had to change that chain before. In some rare cases the chain has gone or the pump goes but like most things on the forum we always hear the bad and not the positives think how small the B7 tfsi community is and think how many people are completely oblivious to those chains snapping or going wrong? I bet you they don't loose sleep over it just enjoy the car.

But its not very likely. Just remember as with these engines everything is linked together so if your rear timing chain tensioner goes by the rear camshafts, its going to have a ripple effect on the valves and so forth if the chain seizes well then there is a big chance it will damage the chain at the lower end of the motor.

And the reality is you could change the oil pump to a replacement or a revised unit and yet the engine could still get trashed by something else so rather than worrying about it just change the crucial parts and enjoy it.

Brilliant reply, thanks

Yeh, im of the same thinking as you in respect of how many actually have problems. Its the same with everything really, you only hear bad things, never good (same at work, never get praised, but a tiny mistake/problem, and boy do we know about it lol)

Anyhoo, I think i'll just ask the mechanic (audi tech) what he thinks of the pump chain. If it looks ok (i trust his opinion) then I'll leave it.

thanks again for all the replies and help, and just as my own little opinion note, i would say that the long life service is the biggest culprit, but I know the 2.0tfsi triangle of death can happen to anyone, so who knows, but changing oil every millenium cant help the matter lol
