Owned my s38l for one month now,
After purchase she was sweet as. Then a day or so later I realised the temp gauge wasn't always reading correct. Then engine managment came on. Long story shirt had temp sensor replaced. Which solved nothing, then just today after driving like that for 3weeks I had the thermostat done at a garage as I don't have the time to do myself.
Got a call to pick up my car and got told the bad new that there is a leak in my head gasket.
I drove the car for 20/30 min and it was fine and the temp gauge is back to normal rising to 90 and staying there!

She is back in on Monday to diagnose the leak some more and possibly strip down the block.
I am hoping it's not too big of a job and there isn't further damage. A bit gutted really, but having a full service at the same time so she should be back in all fours in the coming week!

head gaskets are rare to go on 1.8t

are you 100% their diagnosis is correct?
did they do a "sniff test" of the expansion bottle for combustion gases? (turns the test fluid yellow)

What they told me was they found CO2 in the expansion bottle. And when it's back in Monday they will do more tests is this right?
I have been driving her for about 20days with thermostat stuck open could this of caused the gasket leak?
The car had been well maintained as far as I am aware and hasn't been overheating.
Cheers

Had a compression test done today and it's definatly head gasket. She at the garage until Thursday when they can get the head off and check for damage.
Only been in her for 3weeks and loving every minute of it. There where no signs to begin with.
Only when changing the coolant did they notice it was discoloured so they checked for exaughst fumes.

I hope to god it is just the gasket! Hopefully have her back next Wednesday :(

Feeling your pain mate. Hope you get her back and don't have to shell out too much.

Pick her il tommorow after having head skimmed and gasket fitted. While it was in had new timing belt, tensioner, turbo gasket and a couple of boost leaks done. Oh and some new clocks coded as mine where pixilated. Not looking forward to the bill but should feel great to be back in her feel lost just one week in 1.2 vw fox!

I bet she will drive mint ( my s3 is a girl as I have spent a small fortune on her).

Drives superb Crnt take the smile of my face. That's what it's all about aye,
Wallet is one hell off a lot lighter though.

Hope the head skim hasn't raised the compression ratio too much, or you will have big problems if it detonates under high boost.

Is there anything I can do to check the compression ratio and make sure it's ok? Thanks

Compression test to see if it is within given tolerance, I'm sure someone on here could give you the correct ratio.

I am sure it was compression tested once skimmed. Il ca the garage tomorrow and check. They told me it was tested again and it's passed, surely they wouldn't hand me the keys if it wasn't the right ratio. Thanks anyway mate

If the garage is reputable it should be fine, glad it's all sorted bud.

Ye mate they are not a specialist but are reputable, talking me through every thing were doing, only owned mine for 3 weeks so I am new to the engine and car, I know my way around 60% haha.
The lad that carried out the work was very clued up and had worked on a few of these s3s doing all sorts so I trusted him.
After falling out with the stealers don't think I will be going back to then again for as long as I can help it.
Took her for a good run tonight and drives better than ever.
Now time to save again haha
