hey everyone

Just wondering what tyre pressures you put in your cars? I've got a s3 sportback, just took it to kwik fit and they put in 45psi each corner, thinking it might be over inflated? Should I deflate slightly?

Thank you!

All information on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb.

Wouldn't it be easier to check the sticker as Pete suggested?

Thanks, I didn't even know there was a sticker in the door! I thought you guys would be flattered you are my first port of call for any issue on my car! Thanks anyway, all good now

Dazz glad you got it sorted. Don't forget when you set the tyre pressures to reset the monitoring system.

Hey guys. I just had the same thought as Dazs myself. I checked the door jamb on my S3 Sportback and it said to inflate to 45 psi also. I did this. I only picked up my car a few days ago and Audi had my tyres inflated to 39 psi on the front and 36 on the back and to be honest I think it felt better. Any thoughts?

What do you mean by "felt better" ?

The manufacturer recommended pressure will tend to be a all-round compromise figure, for all round workability in a variety of different situations (eg: load, mpg etc).
If you are seeking maximum grip, for example, then a variance of pressure by a few psi will yield the results you are looking for (grip), at the expense of something else (wear).

In the vast majority of cases, you are better off following the recommended figure, unless you are seeking to exploit a particular characteristic.

At your own risk:

I mean it felt better in terms of grip, which would obviously make sense. I am just wondering if the trade off in wear and mpg is worth it for superior grip, I would be inclined to say yes. But will not inflating to the "correct pressure" raise a safety issue?

So Audi inflated my tyres to pressures outside the recommended when I picked my car up. I can't see that the tyres were unsafe like that. I think that they were safe as they were. You disagree?

Your car and tyres will only cope with 5 passengers and luggage, driving at 155mph on the Autobahn, when inflated to the recommended pressures. Slam on the brakes with all those passengers and luggage from 155mph, what do you think will happen if the tyres are under inflated? Think about the dynamic transfer of loads, the opposing forces etc. under braking etc.

Fair point but my S3 will never be carrying that sort of load, and even if it was, I would not be doing 155mph. Besides I have an A6 for that job. The recommended pressure on the door jamb for less passengers is 41 at front and 39 at back. The handbook recommends to set to the max passengers but I think I would prefer to set the tyres to the lower passengers rating.
