2.0T Oil issue engine repair cost

I'm guessing, audi only replaced the Pistons and rings and maybe seals without doing any other work line re-honing block and refresh/replace crank, hence its still a problem. I found speaking to someone else other day that they had a rebuild and it was clearly making a tapping noise.
I don't think half the dealers know the proper procedure to rebuild a block imo.
Hence I was pleased to have a replacement engine.

I don't know. I just want to get rid of it.

I almost required a new engine last year when the bearings to the fly wheel failed, knocking out the timing. My saving grace was that I was stationary when it happened. With a good will gesture the repair cost me £1,500 rather than £9,000 for a new engine!

But S4 costs a fortune to run on petrol and for many the maintenance bills will be high.

I just wished Audi would make decent engine for once. Every single one seems to have an Achilles heel. Dpf, piston rings, injectors, timing chains etc.

No matter which one you pick there is always something. I used to run mk4 golf gtis and 1.9 gt tdis and other than a MAF and the stodgy suspension they were bomb proof

The trouble is that engine is not an "Audi only" engine in its basic design, it is a generic VAG engine, adapted for "in-line" installation in Audis, there are/were a few "Audi only" engines and these seemed to have a better service record - a bit like buying an S series Jag with the smaller Ford engine in it.

The list of "bad bits" you quoted are all generic bad VAG bits so will be showing up as faults across the group - timing chains being one of the worst!

The Bmw dealership gave me £15,000 for it about £3000-£4000 less than it was actually worth. It was then for sale at an independent dealer for £17,000 in Preston then 2 weeks later an another different independent dealership in Bournemouth at £19,000 then sold within a week.

I let it go for too little to be honest but the X5 i was trading it in for was spectacular and was exactly what the wife wanted.
We Buy Any Car offered £16,400 however it had a private registration on so i couldn't sell it to them, it would have to mean that i would take the plate off and potentially loose the X5 i was buying in the process
!

Well you did very very well, most traders we spoke to (in the south) would not even offer on our car (and showed me the paperwork for all the previous disastrous Audi petrol trade ins they are currently having to get Audi to do piston upgrades on) The one, and only one, that would offer, offered £7500 for a 2010 A4 Avant with 60k miles. If you achieved £15k for a car 1 year younger you got of very very lightly. Something else we were conscious of, is most 'trade in' paperwork states you must reveal any known problems. We felt it would be very hard for us to claim to a p'd off trader you were unaware of your car consuming a litre of oil every few hundred miles.

It was a trade in at the Bmw dealership so i presume they aren't aware of the issue. It should be there responsibility to check the vehicle is perfect. As far as i am aware the car just uses a lot of oil as does any 2.0tfsi ! WBAC sometimes give reasonable offers if you are stuck.

Ive gone over 600 miles by 90 opppps called them yesterday and they called back today saying I need to get it to them asap otherwise I will have to pay for another test, told them I have a busy day and they said thats no excuse how rude I cannot pussy foot around them if I cannot physically get there and I put extra miles on my clock, Their response is I should plan it, how can I if I need to go somewhere at short notice and put extra miles on my clock am i supposed to stop and not go jsut cause I will go over their limit.

The ladies response is you will have to pay for the next test if it needs to be done again as you should schedule it in at the appropriate time....cheek of her.

So to summarise the story so far:

Your TFSI engine starts using excessive amounts of oil and as you are understandably concerned, and armed with your research from forums, you advise your dealer of the problem.

The dealer acknowledges the issue and instigates the Audi recommended procedure for monitoring oil usage and requests you to bring the car back after you have covered 600 miles.

You overshoot the advised mileage and call them to explain and they recommend that you bring the car in as quickly as possible, presumably before the overshoot mileage increases more significantly. You play the 'busy day' card and they effectively try to reason with you that this isn't something that they can control, particularly when they are trying to conduct a test under pre-advised conditions and which by default requires your co-operation as it's your car.

Hopefully they will be able to make some adjustments to the calculations to take into account the extra miles, but if there is a valid/technical reason why you needed to keep reasonably close to 600 miles then I think the dealer would be entitled to charge you for a new test if the process has to start again.

If your car is plagued by the dreaded oil consumption problem then it is only right that Audi rectify this for you. But for your dealer I suspect that getting Audi UK's contribution towards parts etc is dependent on them performing the required tests. Surely you have to help them to help you, and maybe the service adviser wasn't as tactful as they could have been - perhaps they were also having a busy day and, possibly like you with your mileage, were not monitoring things quite as carefully as they could have done?!

They sorted it and its only using .2ltr per 600 miles and its within tolerance if it starts using upwards of .5ltr then there is an issue they said.

I was a bit sharp with the guy and told him you have me over a barrel now and I have to get my servicing done here in order to keep in with good will if the issue gets any worse...that's the part I hate as I can service my car myself grrrr good job I got two years free servicing with the car I suppose.... I will worry about it later ;-)

Mine was back in today after 618 miles and 1 litre of oil. Not surprisingly, it failed!

Edinburgh Audi really good about it. They did explain audis goodwill policy is not valid for cars over 5 years old but they will make an exception as mine is nearly 6 but with full dealer history.

Needs Pistons, con rods and Piston rings etc, approx £5800. I'll hear back tomorrow if Audi uk will foot their 50% to match dealer, but dealer pretty positive they will. If so, car back in again in two weeks.

I'll keep you posted......

Mine also failed should find out tomorrow from vindis audi Huntingdon. Not impressed by them though, took mine in Tuesday when mmi was blank but warning light had not come on, paid stage 2 test, picked car up and 15 miles later warning light came on! So they had not put any oil in after test!!!!! My car is a 10 plate with 97k and full audi history

Told you it would. How much to sort it though ?

Should find out tomorrow. Why they do the tests is beyond me, audi no the issue and it's as if they want to get more money out of the consumer!

see, this is making me more confused now. the mails i got from my Audi dealer and Craig Westwood said "on the new range engines they can use up to 1 ltr of engine oil per 750 miles (max) . this tends to decrease the more the engine is run in ".
my light's just come on again today, i usually stick in a half litre at a time and it lasts around 500ish miles.

so what the Hell is going on? according to your post i have an issue, according to my mails, i'm fine >:-/

So dealer came back with offer of 50% towards rebuild!!!

Should I accept this as car was bought from a non franchised dealer over a year ago and my local audi dealer was not the one that carried out previous service history. Paid a pretty good price for it. Also car is nearly at 98k. So I would be getting as good as a new engine with a warranty. I also had had the car previously re-mapped by revo before I was aware of the issue.

Really like the car especially with re-map so should I just go ahead. I did say I would like a bit more towards rebuild.

So how much are you going to have to pay then mate? I would go ahead as you never had it from a dealer and its been remapped before ;-)

Looking at £2500! But as you say car was never serviced at Vindis Audi and it did have a re-map, also just done 98k! Car owes me £8000 so at £10500 I think I will have a decent car again. Goes in Monday.

Slightly off topic does anyone know if they remove the front bumper when doing the engine work? As I would like to get it re-sprayed.

Audi paying for my repairs - £5800 all in. Nothing to be paid by me.

No issues, no arguments, 2009 car with 63k miles but full history with dealer. That's what saved me!!!

I bought my car from Audi have all work and servicing completed by Audi, yet they still charged me £370. If it wasn't for going absolutely mental on the phone with AUK when my car broke down, I would have ended up paying £2,500! That was before America had won their law suit.

Just been reading this thread with interest as I was looking to get a 2.0T Avant, it seems these engines are still suffering the same fate as my Passat 2.0T lump did a couple of years ago when it went pop! :(

Left me without a car for a fortnight and a nice £2500 bill at the end of it, even the AA patrol knew exactly what I was heading for, as soon as he put the make,, model and problem into his little box of tricks it almost exploded and then produced a print out telling me to prepare myself for a £2000+ bill......it wasn't wrong.

I'm in a BMW 330i now, might just be on the drive a bit longer after reading all of these horror stories.

But it's only a design fault in the Pistons, once fixed its a brilliant engine. Not that it wasn't before apart from drinking oil.

Agreed. My car feels so much better now, but I still wouldn't buy another one unless the car came with a 5 year warranty. I tend to replace them after that.

Hi all. Massive thread about what should be an awesome car!
Anyway without going into too much detail at the moment, I own a May 2011 A4 TFSI 211 exhibiting all the characteristics of weetabix piston rings. Currently going through the motions with a dealer. It's been exhibiting all the big oil consumption and constant misfires on cylinder 2. Audi UK are now involved but I have noticed that a software update was completed before I bought the car according to the service book. Is this related to oil consumption? Iv heard of a pcv and software update but nothing else! If so this dealer has lied to me about any previous oil problems and also told me not to contact Audi UK. I think defo a rebuild on the cards but Im adamant I will not pay a penny! By the way I have just contacted Audi UK! It also has full Audi service history and is under 70K.

Software update is the first stage, but usually goes hand in hand with having the oil drained and weighed before returning 623 miles later to confirm results.

Sounds like someone was trying a cheap fix......? Audi themselves told me to the best of their knowledge, the new software and new PCV has only ever worked for one vehicle! The rest required the full rebuild........

The software update in the back of the service book has been stamped by this dealer! That's my concern that they are already aware it's had oil issues. When I spoke to a service rep they have mentioned it has had an emissions service/test but wouldn't say anymore! Any ideas what that is or is that them saying it's already had stage 1 done? Anyway it cannot complete the current test as its misfiring. I will be kicking off on Monday if this dealer has lied. An Audi UK case manager is dealing with it now...

My car started misfiring, then it broke down. I had to flatbed it to the main dealer where the sales rep knew straight away what the issue was. Comes to something when the guy on the shop floor also understands the symptoms of a naff engine design.

Anyhow, the spark plugs required replacing because they had got gunked up with oil residue for the engine issue.

The job was going to cost me £100, but they did it for free because I went absolutely mental.

So the dreaded oil consumption hit today, went from 1500+ to 1l of oil now 528 to the litre. Contacted local dealer booked in for test. Also had a chat with Audi UK just to have the case opened.....

Lets hope you fare up well with AUK.

I've just put a holding deposit down on an E350 Estate. Amazingly enough, because I'm looking to go through MB finance, they offered me £1,000 more for my car as a p/x than I was going to sell it privately. That also included all the dents and scratches I was going to get repaired in two weeks time for £800. Lucky I guess.

I just need to break the news to the wife!

Hi, also have same problem! 1st oil consumption test failed, repair cost now being negotiated!

If anyone has any evidence such as letters/invoices that they can post here (personal details covered obviously!) regarding engine repair work done for free by Audi on 2.0tfsi engines I'd be very grateful!! My local dealer seems to think these free repairs are urban legend and I aim to prove them wrong and get my repair done free also!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for any help

They are just playing the game.

Mine is in on Tuesday for full repairs (5800) which Audi are covering 100%. Once I get it done, I'll happily send you the details. My dealer didn't argue once - all paid without issue.

Update from my ongoing consumption test. Have had to stick to motorway driving to avoid the known misfire however after 175 miles the MMI is already at half way! Wonder how much further until the oil light comes on! Any guesses?...
£370 sounds like a reasonable contribution fix however we all should be getting it free!!! Thanks for the invoice upload. Every little helps....

So call from Audi today originally I was going to pay half the cost of the quoted £5800 and they said they will be paying 100!!!

Totally blown away as my car had done 98k and had a stage one remap! Thank you Audi you have made my day!!!!

Good luck. I hammered mine up and down the M4 in 4th gear. That helped!

That's great news. I still haven't got over the entire situation, but yesterday agreed an amazing part-ex deal. So I've got my car for another few days, maybe a week, then it's gone. It can be someone else's problem then.

So I spoke to the service advisor at Vindis Audi today and asked him why they are paying 100% of the costs, a week ago it was 50%. He said that it looks like Audi UK has finally admitted there is a problem!

So hopefully anyone else with this issue should get it done for free!

About time Audi!
