Been doing some research into these and have read that many 2.0 TFSI engines burn a lot of oil and if you are out of warranty you are out of luck? Or is this just limited to the 2009-2011 models I've seen a A3 with 107K miles, reasonably priced with great spec but was wondering if I should just avoid it like the plague due to issues? It's a 2006 56 plate 2.0 TFSI with 200BHP and 107,000 miles on the clock. Is there anything specifically I should be looking out for when I go to inspect the vehicles? I have VCDS so could also take that along and plug it in and do a scan if the dealer is happy.

I was originally going to get a 170BHP TDI but I'm only 20 years old.. might aswell enjoy while I'm young. Insurance is also surprisingly affordable at around a grand.

if you buy a 170tdi, you'll have a much better car than the tfsi in my humble opinion...add a remap and you're cooking on gas!

if you insist on petrol engine then i'd go for 1.8tfsi. they are rated at 160bhp but the vast majority produce more from factory and you can easily get it to 210/220bhp. i've driven one and it does have a very broad power band

Firstly, don't listen to this man. He is just giving his "opinion" and there is no reason why a 170tdi is a "better" car. Better for some people, yes. Everybody? No..

I have a 2006 TFSI and it doesn't use any oil. My Friend had a Leon and that did use oil..

Mine has been pretty good since I've bought it. Regular oil changes with quality oil will help.

As with any performance turbo car it will use more oil if you drive it hard everywhere. Remember to let your turbo warm up and cool down and keep the engine in good health and well serviced. They are a great engine and provided it has been looked after before hand you shouldn't have any problem with it.

With an engine that's got 107k on it I would be treating it to a FULL service and change the PCV valve and fuel pump cam follower just so you know everything is sweet.

I check mine every month and it only needs topped up every other month usually.

Thanks for the replies guys. Anything in particular I should be inspecting when I go look at a few? Am I right in thinking the 2.0TFSI is chain driven?

Belt and chain driven mate. Belt should be changed every 60k or 4 years iirc.

As for things to look for there isn't much really. As usual make sure it has service history and all the lights turn on and go out by themselves on the dash. Make sure it's running smoothly (hunting at idle would more than likely be a faulty PCV valve) and doesn't have any misfires or hesitations through the rev range and under boost.

Thanks - is the chain for the engine and the belt for the water pump then?

Gave my opinion because I'm entitled to and isn't that the point of a forum, to share ideas and opinions?

Some we agree with and some we don't. That doesn't mean we tell other members not listen to what somebody has to say

There are loads of posts I don't agree with. But all I do is provide an alternative point of view, not say don't listen to whoever

I would also change the oil pick up pipe! I bought mine with full service history with 80k miles and my engine died because of this pipe which only cost £28 Iirc

Not any problems with mine - close to £100k mileage on a January 2009 58 plate 2.0TFSI. That was the newer version of the 2.0TFSI engine, which had better CO2 and was introduced with the facelift which had a few updates (e.g. DRLs, a white rather than red text on the dashpod computer info). Conversely my previous diesel A3 8P drank oil like Oliver Reid enjoyed his booze.

I wouldn't be unduly put off the TFSI by some reports you may have read. If you research the 170 you will find issues with that engine. I personally prefer the petrol and would encourage you to drive them both to form a view; not the stories you may have heard.

Saying that..... - In September 2008 I test drove the 1.8tfsi and 2.0tfsi. The 2.0tfsi was noticeably better in the power delivery, quicker and far more fun to drive. It was a no brainer to go for the 2.0tfsi - almost equivalent mpg and emissions (with the newer version) and far more smiles. I don't feel the need to remap a car, and your priorities may differ.

Not exactly. There's a timing belt that runs the cam and water pump off the crank. Then a chain on the gearbox side of the engine that links the two camshafts. Like so...

Of course you are. But when it's asked for.

All of the engines are going to have issues specific to them, but if you ever feel like you would like more power you will kick yourself if you don't get the 2.0 TFSI. Obviously they will all remap etc but bang for buck none of them come close IMO.

I concur with that.

TFSI's have their issues but unless you doing mega miles a Tdi is really no benefit. Especially when they eat turbo's, injectors, the hassle of DPF's, sticky vains..
