Please can someone give me advice about the servicing for my car. I've done nearly 9000 miles and loving every minute of it and my warning light has now appeared telling me to change the oil in my car.
All well and good and I will get this done but I'm car tells me that it's also due an inspection at 18000 miles?

Surely if they change the oil at 9000 miles then this would be my service? But then at 18000 miles does the oil get changed again?

Please could you shed some light on this......

There are 2 sorts of service visits on your car.

An A service, and a B service

A service, known as "Oil Service" is just oil and filter change
B service known as "Inspection Service" can include an oil service, but also includes other items and other checks

Oil Services, if you are on a fixed servicing regime, is at 9000miles interval
Inspection Services, if you are on a fixed servicing regime, is at 18,000miles interval

If you are in a variable (long life) servicing regime, your car will tell you when the 2 services are due.

Much more info in the Servicing FAQ here:

That makes a lot more sense!! So out of interest, does the inspection check include an oil change because I have been advised that it won't?
I was told that it's a oil change at 9000 miles the an inspection check at 18000 miles with no oil change?
So that would mean the oil would only be changed again in 2 years which seems a long time?

You were advised that the inspection service won't include an oil change,
or
you were advised that the cost of the inspection service won't include an oil change? ;)

Lol I was advised that the inspection does not include an oil change as per the Audi guidelines but is that correct? So that would mean the oil won't be due for changing for another 2years after my 9000 mile oil change?

Well, is your car on the fixed, or variable servicing regime?

If fixed - then you are due an oil service every 9000 miles regardless. If this happens to coincide with an inspection service, then they will charge you for an inspection service, plus an oil service. Although most centres will offer a combined price.

If variable - then your next inspection service will be at 19,000 regardless, but the next oil service could be anywhere between 9 and 19,000 miles.

All this is already in the FAQ:

Ah ok thank you for the help. I would be on a fixed service then so i guess it will obviously be due now at 9000 miles then an inspection with no oil change at 18000 miles.
The next oil change will be due in another year then?

If on fixed regime, oil change is every 9000 miles.

Mine's every 9k miles.
I've seen them required at 10k, 12k and 20k for other cars I've had.
Looks like Audi want to max my spending with them and make sure they get Top Dollar off me.

When I come to sell the vehicle, how do you "prove" to the potential Buyer that you've had your annual Services - and that they've been undertaken at an Audi Dealership ??
Audi said that the Key would contain all the detail - or was it their Audi System. Can't remember.
Although neither would be any good if I was selling privately - or more likely to a different Marque Dealer.
The only thing I can show would be the Invoices showing dates / work / payment / etc.
All of which can be easily forged if of that particular mind-set.

Am I missing something ?!

You get a print out to slip into the wallet section in the Service Booklet :)

Thank You, appreciate that :hi:
Was a little worried about proving my Annual Services.

Please don't take this the wrong way, although is there NOTHING you don't know !! :detective2:

:yahoo::thumbs up:

There is plenty I don't know ;)

But I've been around the industry a very long time ;)

My A3 is on the 'long-life' service intervals as have been all nine of my A3s. This means the car will be serviced at around 18-19k miles. As I now do around 12k miles a year that's one service every 18 months or two services in the three years I normally keep my car.

What sort of mileage are you going to be doing. If it's more than 10k per year get the car changed onto Long-life service intervals.

Usually average around 8.5k miles per year although probably be around 10k if the summer turns out to be sunny / dry.
I always change the oil every year regardless of mileage.

First car I've had that's had a 9k mileage range rather than the usual 10k / 12k.
Not a fan of the 20k mileage range - still took it in every year for an oil change.
Usually involved a debate with the Service Manager though who seemed to think I couldn't comprehend that I could wait for 2 yrs for the oil change.

On a slightly separate topic, my cold 1st / 2nd gear crunch seems to be getting better as each mile / month turns over

This reminds me of Fred Flinstone. ( Cartoon )
Fred and Barney Rubble would peddle their feet on the ground to
get it going. It was called the Flintmobile. :)

My A3s (9 so far) have always been serviced and had the oil changed in accordance with Audi's instructions. After all they made them and they are the ones who are providing the warranty on them. In total I have done over 250k miles in A3s and have never had any problems with any of them and in most cases the oil was changed at around 18-19k when the service light came on. All of them have done over the 10k annual limit for the fixed service interval so have been on the Long-life service. Personally I don't see any point in paying to have the oil changed more often as the modern synthetic oils are design to last that sort of mileage. My first cars needed oil changes were required every 3k and then every 6k but they are long gone although so people cannot seem to accept that the oil has also moved on in the same way as most of the rest of the rest of car industry.

There's plenty of debate / information for both methods i.e. annually / bi-annually.

My previous car (2010) had a 20k service interval, although by 2012 this had changed to 10k intervals for the same (new) cars. Not sure whether this was technical based or customer focused ??

For me, the oil is the "life blood" of the engine and catches / captures all sorts of nasties - as it's meant to do.
Particularly with Diesel Engines which is why the oil turns "black" much quicker than petrol models.

As is the case with nearly everything car related, it's horses for courses / pay your money, takes your choice type of conversation.

My A3s (9 so far) have.....

Wow, 9 A3s ?!?!
That's a lot of A3s over the years.
Didn't / Don't you ever fancy a change.

Well done though finding a car that you clearly like / enjoy.
Like Veeeight, you must also be a mine of information on these cars !!

I had an A3 Hatchback in 2003 and an A3 Convertible in 2014.
Different range of vehicles in between to keep the spice going.

Dave has been a member since 2003, also been on the staff etc., and very knowledgeable. I bow to his knowledge :)
He had a wobbly in the past about leaving the forum due to unacceptable behaviour from a past member, but hopefully thats just history now.
Place wouldn't be the same with out him!

Thanks for the complements. I do love the A3 abut I did consider a Golf VII (mainly because I prefer it's touch screen system to the Audi MMI) before buying no 9, but in the end I could not get the spec I wanted from the Golf range. I have looked at other makes in the past but nothing else has come close to the A3 for me. Before my first A3 in 1998 I had Golf VR6, four other Audis and four Golf GTi's. I have in fact had a VAG car for the last 39 years and have loved everyone of them in their day. My wife has also had four Polo's in the past and now drives an Audi A1.

I also thoroughly enjoy this forum and I am always happy to help whenever I can.

Good on you, Dave. As a more recent joiner I have greatly appreciated your input. I'm on my second A3 and at the moment can't find a car based on the A3 package that I would prefer to own. If I live long enough (poor old ******) I might get up to 9 A3s.
