Fibre optic broadband

So bt have finally decided to bring my postcode out of the dark ages and now I can get fibre optic super fast broadband......... Well hopefully.

I have opted for bt infinity 2 which reckons I can get upto 80mb speeds

Now currently I'm lucky if I get 3 mb which goes if my son is on YouTube. So I suppose anything is an improvement on that.
Anyone else gone from "normal" broadband to fibre optic, is it much better? What speeds are you getting?
I have to wait till the end of the month to find out but I'm not holding my breath.....
 
they promised me 80mb

maxed out at 13mb had to cancel and go back with sky
 
I've just transferred to Plusnet. I was getting up to 8mb on normal broadband, I'm now getting 38mb which is what I was pretty much promised.
 
im a virgin media tech, all my installs i do wether it is 50mb or 152mb ive always seen more than what it is meant to be, im with talk talk fibre as i cant get virgin where i live and am on a upto 50mb package and got 38mb the day i got it installed now im getting around 20mb,, if you can get virgin in your area consider getting it as it is better than the other fibre broadbands as it doesnt come down a phone line like bt/talk talk etc, 4 out of 5 jobs a day im converting customers from sky/bt to virgin and they are more than please with the internet, can usually see upto 5mb more than what you pay for aswell :)
 
We'r with Virgin and can vouch for the speeds, we never really suffer even with 5 of us surfing :)
 
with virgin media too, got the 100mb package, but getting 120mb speeds.
 
Problem with infinity is now its slowing down with contention ratios getting higher with everyone getting it, mines definitely slowed down & I've had all the BT offerings along the way
 
I live in rural( relatively) aberdeenshire so Virgin isn't an option - it sounds awsome though bit will have to wait a few decades haha
Although on the plus side I live in one of the cheapest post codes for car insurance
 
Been with BT Infinity for just over a year now,up to 70mb downloads and usually average out about 50-56 mb,with about 12mb uploads
 
we were with BT Infinity 2 from the word go, they said 76 mbs for us but to be honest that went after a while, now we just seem to get between 3-28 mbs so i've cancelled now at the end of the 18 month contract.

Gone with BT infinity 1 (MAX 37 mbs) cheaper and more realistic speed, why pay for a speed you'll never get.
 
I've been on Virgin broadband since 2001, the speed fluctuates depending on the time of day. I'm on 50meg atm, which is more than adequate for my needs, but it drops down to 20 at peak hours. Just before Xmas, during the peak hours of xmas shoppers, I did a speed test and got 6 meg at one point! lol, but that's a rare event.

I'm with Virgin & found them to be good with Fibre Optic. I did consider going to BT but Virgin did me a deal so I stayed with them :)
 
Im on Virgin Media too on the 100mb package, on wifi, we normally get speeds of 35-50mbps, however I have tested on occasion and got 108mbps, cant complain as previously i was on normal BB and was getting about 8mbps, so im happy with the upgrade.

Its good to see download speeds improve, i downloaded a film a while ago on fibre and it took about 8mins which was awesome :)
 
im with virgin on the 150 meg package and usually its around 156 cant fault the service good all round
 
If anyone lives in a new build estate built within the last three years you could be able to get fibre to the home broadband through a new ish company called see the light. I have a 300meg package. for £50 a month. All calls included as well. Previously before moving I had Virgin media and can echo comments above and always had reliable service with quoted speeds and above.
 
I work for BT and one of the very few perks we have is free broadband and a BT vision box. I was one of the first connected to BT Infinity when it went live in our area and could get 65-70 meg no problem. After around 18 months it's more like 50-55 meg with an upload around 12-15 Meg. More than enough speed for what I use it for.
Just done a speed test. Good ping time as well normally it's around 5-10ms.

Virgin rocks. Move home to get a Virgin connection. I used to live in **** and ****** Internet used to drive me insane.

I expect better from the UK. My in laws live in a crappy little village in Scotland and no mobile signal and their 'wifi' is slower than ****'s.
 
@mdm83 One key factor that determines speed with normal (ADSL/ADSL2+) broadband is distance from the exchange.

With BT infinity or any other FTTC product that doesn't really matter; the key limiting factor is distance to the green box on the street. If your green box is close then you should get good speeds (as long as your line quality is ok).
 
That is true for the actual line speed but after that you are down to contention ratios and bandwidth in the broadband suppliers network, which is where the choice of supplier comes in.
There are cheaper suppliers than BT, they are cheap for a reason as they don't spend the money on the core infrastructure and have higher contention ratios, and lower bandwidth connections.
The fact that you can live in the middle of no where and still get a broadband / WiFi connection at all is entirely due to BT and the universal service Obligation.

No other broadband provider would even attempt to provide broadband to somebody who lives in the middle of no where.It's financial madness as the costs will never be recovered.
There will be a phone box somewhere in the area but a mobile company isn't going to spend the money as they will never get it back.

BT infinity actually did what it said on the tin for once with mine. I get 67 Up and 15 Down which I use for heavy internet PC gaming (battlefield 4) and it just performs effortlessly.

for once cant complain about BT
 
My broadband gets sorted next week so hopefully be good

Well I live in a crappy little village in scotland and I wouldn't change it for the world mate. I might not get the best internet but that's quickly forgotten when I think of the great location I live in and couldn't get a better place to raise kids

I moved from plusnet about 5mb to Bt infinity 2 which was claimed to be around 76mb. The only problem was it has to go to your master socket which in my case was in the loft and not really practical as I like things wired.Ended up connecting it to a secondary socket downstairs.Still getting 50+mb so mustn't grumble
 
We went from BT broadband which would get ~2Mb, switched to Infinity and was getting around 70Mb, obviously a massive difference.
At the other place I stay we have Virgin which I average about 75Mb but I've run speed tests which have come back as 160Mb. Both are excellent to be honest!
 
We are about to get fibre optic broadband where I live in aberdeenshire, and Im holding out on getting a new contract with bt until it's all officially up and running, although all the work seems to have finished with laying the cables, about a month ago! So not too sure who to speak to. I spoke to bt and they couldn't say when it was official. But they did some sort of future line test and they said the speed would be 5-10mb, I'm getting about 5 now on normal broadband! So what's that all about?
 
Had our fibre optic switched on yesterday and what a difference!
I can leave downloading a film till the same evening now- before it was a 24hr notice family debate deadline if we wanted to download a film for the next day!
