The ECON button is allways on on our climate control.

I had it checked for gas and it was fine (They drained it and regassed it and found no leaks)

Any pointers to fault finding and does this give any help?

Have you checked the air con pulley/clutch plate is working as it should. It could have failed and is not engaging the air con and is stuck

Try changing the temperature, switch the stereo off so that you can hear it better. Can you hear the pump engaging? Other thing you can try is, put it on the lowest temp possible, switch off the unit completely and switch it back on and tell us if you can hear anything? Usually turning it on affects the engine torque aswell.

The clutch had gone on mine, leaving the Econ light on. I checked that I had currant down to the compressor first, ended up changing the compressor!

I had this issue on a customers at work. It was the pressure switch in the a/c line behind the grill. If that fails then the a/c won't work as it won't be able to monitor the pressure in the system to activate the compressor clutch. 1bar refrigerant pressure on the above table is far too low for the a/c system
