Guys help, ive recently gone from 19 wheels to 18 wheels and since then I've notice a bad humming noise from the front. The tyres on the back are 235/40/18 conti sport and the fronts are budget 225/40/18 however I plan to put 235s on when I can afford to. Anybody have a solution

Think you may have answered you own question in a way lower profile tyres to standard less noise insulation and budget tyres...

Have you checked to see if there is any rubbing due to new larger wheels

Oh sorry I completly misread your post I thought you went larger wheels not smaller, doh stupid me!

How loud is it and is it proportional to speed like humming increases in pitch as speed pics up?

I can here it when music is on abd sometimes it's not as loud at first I thought it was a bearing but if that was the case it would have do e it this morning when the 19s were on so it can't be

Yeah I still suspect tyres, though I've never heard (excuse the pun!) of budget tyres causing a noticeable noise before. What make are they and have you tried googling humming noise from "insert tyre make here" tyres? Worth a go I suppose.

I can remember years ago there were loads of threads on tyre noise, some brands better than others. Google "tyre noise A4", still a fair bit of info on it.

To check it swap the fronts to back to see if the noise moves?

Are they a V tread pattern, I had a set of V tread pattern tyres on my 19's and it was like all 4 wheel bearings had gone.

Are those tyres on the fronts brand new or have seen some miles before ?
If they have been used I'd be checking to see if there is any 'feathering' of the tread blocks...... Run your hand around the circumference of the tyre, if they have uneven wear it can be felt almost as a saw tooth ei smooth transition from block to block in one direction and noticeable edges when running your hand the other way round.

This manifests itself almost as there is a bearing failure, but doesn't vary in severity as your load and unload the wheels when driving. Also much more apparent on smooth road surface too

This issue is created when tyres (wheels) aren't swopped front to back, the set on the rear tend to develop the uneven wear pattern as the only wear they sustain is through braking, ( unless on a quattro of course)

Have you tried swopping the contis onto the front and the budgets to the rear to see if the noise changes or moves to the rear axle ?

Hope this might be of some help :)

check the wheels are tightened properly,

I had a garage last week not tighten a wheel up and had a humming noise.

Guys ive put some conti on the front and the noise has reduced dramatically so it seems the cheap budget tyres that came with the wheels were the cause so Id like to thank you all for your info and help cheerz

Yeah m8 they were but ive taken them off now and put conti sports on amd no noise happy days
