Blackvue DR500GW HD - WiFi In-Car Camera Product Review

Lots have people have asked about the DR500 so thought I would post up some info as well as a video and some info graphics about the Blackvue DR500GW, some of it's features and what it can do!

The Blackvue DR500GW Wifi is a stunning Full High Definition camera equipped with In-Built GPS and Wireless (Wifi) Connectivity features. The video quality is outstanding and inherits all the qualities and features from the Blackvue DR400G HD II and will mean that in the event of an accident you will capture everything that happens in front of you in crystal clear quality.

What player do you use to watch the recorded videos on the phone? The BV app does not work. Neither the built-in video player from Android.
Also, what are your settings for the G sensor and motion detection? Especially for the parking mode?

BlackVue app for android does work, atleast for me on my current phone (which is last years HTC One-S on Android 4.1.1), cool for setting up the camera only (imo) for field of view, not so cool for watching live because the transfer rate is too slow, its like watching less than 1 frame per second!!!! Play back of recordings is ok, much prefer to transfer card to PC though.

The live feed is OK for setup. My problem is that I can't watch the recordings.
I have BV app. installed, I tried other players too but still doesn't work.
I have a low-end Samsung Galaxy Ace+ with Android 2.something. Could this be the reason?
I also have a problem with the small card reader on my MacBook Air, it keeps disconnecting.
Although it is firmly inserted, when I try to copy more than a few files at one, it stops working as if it was unplugged :(
No problem on PC though.

I'm going to be brutally honest here... I think its the phone.

My IP5 worked really well with the DR500 and my brother has a Samsung S4 and it works fine with his DR500 in his car.

In regards to the card reader, make sure card is inserted into the reader firmly. I use a Mac here and if anything its faster than the PC.

Can't comment on this BlackVue or your Phone (though it's possibly too old) If your card is plugged into a USB port on your Mac, the transfer rate is exceeded and the USB bus shuts down momentarily! Try using an SD card adaptor\port for file transfers from your MicroSD card - it's much more stable.

Hi I am looking to buy this setup have people installed this or had it installed as I'm not that good when it comes to custom installs ...

Also this may be a stupid question but as I have a new A4 will installing this and having it hard wired have an impact on my Audi warranty ??

No it wont affect your audi warranty, but it will effect your DAB reception if you have DAB I.E you will pretty much lose DAB. Reason I went back to the DR380, better picture and get to keep DAB.

Im not being facetious Tim, but I think you could make people aware of the manufacturing level issue regarding recording bit-rate and DAB issues with the 550, though a google search will answer any questions.

As Mono stated, no problems with Audi Warranty as long as it's installed properly.

In regards to DAB there is no issue with the DR500 as it doesn't have a Rear Cam so don't worry about that. It was the sensor on the DR550 Rear cam that is broadcasting a signal around 200Mhz which would then travel down the cable which in Blackvue's wisdom they didn't shield. This has caused problems but as stated there is no issue with the DR500.

They are currently manufacturing a better AV cable which should eliminate the DAB interference issue.

In regards to Bit Rate and quality, we're always pretty open and when people call up I'm very honest! We clearly mention bit rates and have recorded footage for our YouTube channel for people to watch in different conditions.

On a DashCam Specific Forum I'm quite open about how underwhelming the camera is to the techy people.

That being said, we do have a lot of customer who purchase the DR550 and are really happy with it.

But I do take your comments on board.

So if I install the DR550GW I will loose my DAB Radio ? do we know if they have sorted this out with a replacement cable ?

As the DR550 stands at the moment and depending on how it is installed then you can experience drop outs in DAB. But this problem does not affect the DR500 which is what this thread is concerning.

Crap I have posted in the wrong thread ....... if needs be an Admin can move my questions to the correct DR550GW thread,.

Sorry

It is possible, the camera will only see 32 but will continue to record on, utilising the unseen 32, just a firmware issue with blackvue that it onky sees 32!

OK! Thank you!

There is now a custom firmware for the Blackvue camera's and it allows the use of larger cards ...

The custom firmware fixes a lot of issues and functions on these cameras you will find it here

They have made improvements in picture quality and connectivity as well as a number of other things.

The custom firmware is compatible with the range of Blackvue cameras.

Have many of you got one of these fitted? I watched that car crash Britain and thinking about getting a dash cam for my own protection.

Just looked at the blackvue website and the 2014 model is now £199 with a free smart power device worth £29.99 and a free deluxe case worth £14.99

Is it worth the money? Looks pretty decent
