My 97 aeb failed mot on emissions, probably due to the decat. I really can't afford to get another cat for it and I don't know anyone at a garage well enough to pass it, so was wondering if there was any things I could do to maybe reduce the emissions?
 
What are the numbers?

Assuming the engines healthy and running properly Its very unlikely you can do anything to get it past an emissions test without a cat. Theres also a visual check for a cat now as well which it should have failed too.

All you can do is either find someone who will pass it, or fit a cat.
 
You have no hope in Hell of passing without the cat. As stated it's presence is visually checked so even if you did meet the emmisions the fact it isn't there would make it a fail. You have no option other than refitting the cat for the MOT, or finding a friendly tester but most won't want to risk putting it through due to the penalties. My cat has to go back on every year for the MOT, costs me a fortune in gaskets.

Well I'm in Norfolk.lol it is a decat disguised as a cat so that's why it didn't fail on not having one. I shall get the numbers on Monday as left the emissions sheet at my work.

I take it a working cat would also bring down the lambda readings?
 
It shouldnt no, the lambda reading indicates its slightly lean.

Might be a bad sensor, you'll need to stick it on the diagnostics to tell.
 
I've had a friend try before but had no luck and kept coming up with a communication error on the scanner. I haven't got a stereo in it and I have tried a brand new one, but I've read up that some of these engines won't read the ecu due to the stereo?
 
Depends what the scanner was, these older cars dont talk the standard OBB2 protocols, you need to get a VAG specific scanner.
 
Can anyone point me in the right direction on a nice cheap one to get hold of?
