I feel a bit sad posting this, as he is no longer with us, but safety is paramount for us S3 owners.

For those who have these fitted, please inspect them when you can! Chris(rhubarb) just has his driver side tie bar fail earlier today. It sheared off at the diff end, which I've never seen before, and these have only been on the car for around 16months? Luckily, he was only doing 20-30mph at the time, and he managed to limp the car into a carpark to be rescued.

I will update with pics later.

i've still got a set of these wrapped up from the last group buy he done. might have to check the welds out before i look at installing them :/ hopefully this is a rare occurrence though, pretty sure he sold a few dozen sets of them and dont think i've heard of any other failures

looks to me that you have the later ones that weren't stainless. Not that its an issue, but everyone with that incarnation should check.

he used to stand by the fact he never had one fail or any reported back to him anyway, and he sold hundreds of these things.

oh well, **** happens.

Mine failed twice in exactly the same place.

Dave replaced them the first time FOC but unfortunately had passed away when the second set failed.

I paid a visit to his company to highlight the issue and was told they are no longer being made for that very reason of safety being a concern....they remained stating that this was solely Dave's thing and they didn't get involved with them as there was a big responsibility on their shoulders should they ever fail.

It would appear that it was the weld not being strong enough and the material being too thin to cope with the daily stresses and forces imposed on them.

As stated, stainless engineering are no longer producing them due to safety reasons. Take that as you will.

This post is in no way a disrespect to Dave as he was truly a good man. Rest in peace.

Shaun.

I did talk to dave about this just before he passed.

I suggested strap welding the inbound joint and bungs and plug welds the outer end to make them stronger.

Its what I'm going to do to mine. I do have the very early ones that are SS that didn't seam to have any problems with that i know of.

I use the ones from Megan racing - been 2 years since they have been installed. No issues yet and look fine. Just had wheel alignment done over the weekend, so had a look underneath the car. Then again I dont get the corrosion that you guys get over there. I just get DUST !!!

Do these adjust insitu lh/rh threaded or do you have to set them and install them?
I cant make them out from the pictures

lhd/rhd threads and adjust on the car. Unlock the nuts and twist the blue section with a man sized spanner :)
Funny thing tho, I put mine in the top position on my S3, tried the same on 2 TT's and we couldn't get wheel alignment in spec. Had to fit them in the lower position on the TT's

Wow, not been on the forum for a few weeks, I log on and find this! Glad you're OK Chris; one shunt a year is enough for anyone.

And yes - RIP s3dave.

16 months on the car? They look older than that from the pics - were they new when installed? Did you have the rose joints in the hubs replaced at the same time? Just wondering if this could be a source of the problem if the joints were seizing and putting additional stress on the bars..?

When I had my suspension done last year I replaced all the bushes with Powerflex and also had the rose joints replaced with new to be sure everything was nice & free with no slop. Either way, I'll definitely get under there and check out the tie bars at the weekend after seeing this.

Well this is quite worrying. I have the mild steel versions which have been on the car about 18 months, the cars in for it's MOT on Saturday morning so I'll have a good nosey whilst it's on the ramps. I might even change them anyway for peace of mind!

****** hell Chris proper brown trouser moment

It was while I was driving it lee lol did check my pants haha, all good though. Just waiting for final cost from MidlandVW there great there though and have already put it back together, Jody had a spare pair of OEM tie bars he put on.

Now they look the nuts and not badly priced either.

Cheers Nilz it's sorted now I think just need to speak to jody to make sure there no other issues and collect the car. Gops was up there when my car came in he sent me a picture of it on the ramp lol.

Hi Paul, cheers mate all is okay luckily no body damage as the wheel didn't catch the arch so I still have a shinier car than you :p

As for the bars they were brand new from David and I had all the front and really polly bushed, but definitely recommend checking them mate.

Both sides were badly corroded Dave, and I was told that the metal there made from was way to thin and possibly dangerous to drive with, nothing against Dave as we got on well and Iv had many dealing with him R.I.P Dave. but it's from a safety side I'm more concerned about.

If I modify mine would other people want them strengthened the same way?

Bit too late for mine Andy, or do you have any ideas on making stronger ones as a side job :D

Seen the tie arms at midland vw, they didn't look very sturdy. Poorly car! Is it all fixed now chris?

I've never seen them snap it that location, but I didn't think they were made of ferrous either. If you get chance, can you measure the tube thickness and put some clear pictures up later? I'm curious to the wall thickness used.

Where else did the tie bars have problems?

When the out bushes seize, the ends of the tie bars would snap off on OEM spec bars, Audi had a recall for those bushes to be replaced, my black S3 had the recall done!
On adjustable tie bars, it was usually the welds for the adjuster failing, this is the first time I've seen it fail at the diff end.
There was another member on here running Dave's bars that failed at the hub end, there's a thread about it somewhere.

mine were so fkn heavy and the adjusters are beafy.
But i can understand the hub and subframe ends being a weak point as theyre just poles welded to flat faces. But, all the available tie bars are made like that looking at pictures

some gussets would be a good idea. As would welding the rods inside the flat bush ends.
