Hi guys I've got an a4 with an aeb lump in. I bought it a while ago with no mot. Put it in and failed on brakes. Got them sorted and took the car for a rag as it had been sitting for a good couple of months. Under moderate to heavy load, I was getting a clunking noise coming from the engine bay and was jerking in time with the noise. It starts about 3k and really struggles to go through the Rev range. I kept my foot planted to the floor to see if something needed clearing out. In 3rd managed to get it to about 5.5k and the jerking and clunking smoothed out. It still does it and happens in every gear. Any help would really be appreciated.

put 1.8t in the title and hopefully Kev will be along soon to help you out. Ive no ideas on the 1.8 turbo lumps im afraid. im more into my dervs

but the first question anyone will ask is.. have you had it scanned for codes?

A guy who I work with was a reputable mechanic and he plugged in his code reader and it kept saying it had a communication error with the ecu.

get a cheap code reader and give it a scan. try unplugging your maf and see if the problems stays the same , it could be something else but its an easy place to start.

fault code scanners u281 u280 on ebay about a tenner, work great

some code readers can be a hit or a miss with the B5's you need a vag one. as above try unplugging the MAF and take it a run and see if its any better.
also is the abs light on? or does it not light up at all?

The abs light is on when you first turn on the ignition then goes off as it should. Like I said my friend tried his code reader and it didn't work, he knows it works as he done a b6 and a Leon the week before. I took it for another spin earlier and the clunking sound, sounds like it's the turbo dumping pressure so I think I might test it for any boost leaks first.

It was misfiring when I bought it and running on 3, bought another coilpack and it sorted it out. But still getting the jerking.

never had a problem with it u281 Ive owned 3 b5's and 4 golf mk 4's always worked.

If its been stood was the battery flat ??

Might need the throttle body aligment adaptation carrying out.

Your best bet is vagcom as you can read measured values code readers come in handy only when you have a light on and to point you in the right direction. You can go a little more indepth with vagcom.

Check pipe work for boost leaks and try diaconnecting the MAF.

I have disconnected the maf but no change, stays exactly the same. Haven't checked for boost leaks yet, is there any hoses that fail more than others?

I think I had something similar once and I think new plugs sorted it.
My car would splutter under load and clear out up the revs but the longer it went on the worse it got.

Pretty sure it was just plugs it needed
