Had my APY engined S3 for nearly a year now. It has been faultless (so far). Starts first time, pulls strongly.

Today, picked car up from where it was parked overnight. Warmed the engine for a few miles of gentle driving before boosting it.........

Major misfire, loss of power then engine sounds like its missing a couple of cylinders (really, really rough. Just about able to idle without cutting out)

So, I pulled over and popped the bonnet. Cam cover sounds like it has a bag of spanners rattling inside it.

Managed to get a mate to tow me back to the house. Managed to start it (I wanted to take a video to post on here to help with diagnosis) but rough idled and then died. Noticed smoke coming out of air filter whilst running which is never a good sign on the whole. Won't start now at all.

VCDS says no fault codes? WTF?

Any help appreciated. :confusion:

Plausible causes... bent rod, damaged valve(s)

Compression test would be useful, check TDC heights of pistons too (1 and 4, 2 and 3) to see if one is a little lower

Oh no.. As Tuffty says, check the heights! Might have bent a rod!

Errr.

Yeah i would say dropped valve, i had the ceramic bit of plug break off into my engine and it just got munched up, only did minor damage to the top of piston, still ran engine for at least 30,000miles after that.

Most of the spark plug is now inside cyl #1 but a chunk of the ceramic is actually missing off cyl 2 plug as well........
Either way, the prognosis isn't good doctor........:doctor:

Ah... I would check compression on that cyl but my money is on a dropped valve or a cracked exhaust valve... also plausible the ceramic fell off the plug and caused this... either way the engine looks to be toast

Bore scope or head off to confirm...

This may be of interest to you...

I'm going to whip the head off either tonight or tomorrow. I'm not sure I want to see what's inside though.

Gops' engine is looking more tempting now.

Absolutely gutted as she's only been back on the road after a spell on SORN for about a fortnight.

Any luck mate?
All out of luck on this one mate......Having a mare!

Nearly every bolt I have had to remove to get to the head off has been either almost rounded or so tight that Hercules himself must have built it. Liberal amounts of heat/penetrating lube/swearing. What was quite worrying was that a few of the cyl head bolts weren't tight at all.

Late last night, I get to the last bolt before I lift head head off (the 3rd on the turbo/mani) and guess what? Yup, most of the teeth are missing. ####! Called it a night as it was getting late and had a few beers to help me forget the loss of most of the skin off my knuckles.

I heard that my neighbours love the sound of heat treated steel being drilled on a Sunday morning. Not wanting to disappoint them, I started nice and early. I drilled a pilot hole through the head of the bolt (down to the shoulder) and began the labourious process of using a variety of different sized drill bits to remove the bolt head. Progress is steady.

I have a couple of millimetres of material left to go ATM. Having a rest as my hand has gone numb with the vibration.

If I ever find out who worked on that engine before I bought it......God help me

Another installment in this drama later...TBC

Not good! Looks like some cowboy has worked on your engine before. Patience and more patience! It's horribly tight down there.
