Hello guys, i can smell diesel from the car when im sat inside. Noticed theres been a few patches on the floor too outside.

Had a look at it on the ramp and theres fuel spilling from somewhere not to sure from where exactly.

The fuel filter has not been changed for at least 20k plus miles, not me previous owner. Could it be the o rings on the nozzle that sits in the filter? As thats what the issues was once on my tdi passat.

I can also feel a slight shake in the car when on idle nothing major but very slight, could this have anything to do with it?

I found my Diesel Heat dissipator was leaking onto the drive overnight and had a bit of a smell of diesel near the drivers side a few months back.
I think id managed to snag it or a rock hit it and since the dissipator is corregated i couldnt see the crack. Swapped it out with a new one from audi, and its been happy days since. might be worth a check!
Its on your drivers side and is partially visible with the undertray on - a long elongated s-bend that goes the length of both your doors - just run your hands down it and it should be free of any fuelly substances, if it isnt id whip off the tray and give it a thorough looking at.

Hope this helps!

Theres no undertray on the car, yes and the fuel smell is on the driver side when ive liffted the bonnet to have a wiff.

Wheni looked at it the otherday when it was in the air for tracking. It was on the gearbox too. Not dripping exactly but as i cast my finger over it could instantly tell it was diesel.

Where abouts is that? Is it just like a long corrugated pipe of some sort?

This is what it looks like, it runs along the inside of your sill on the driverside of the car, under the side undertray.

Hmm i looked at them sides during thr tracking highly doubt it could be that, really appreciate your advice. Looks more as if its coming from a fuel line or a dogey gasket somewhere etc.

I had the same issue with my car found out that the diisapator had cracked and was leaking had it swapped out and the problem went away. I had diesal seaping all over the under tray so had to follow it all back and clean it up.

My car had de in storage for a year so I guess that it go rotted away

Ive had it inspected and it seems to be the seal on the diesel pump, so that will need replacing. Ive had a look on darksides website and it seems to be around 7.50.

Well as I understand it there are two pumps one on or near feul tank and the tandem fuel pump which is attached to cylinde head though I could be wrong. Was wondering if you were doing this yourself could you could do a quick how too guide as I wanted to change mine but not sure if it's just unbolt and replace gasket or more to it than that...

I would personally think its a bolt off replace the seal and put everything right, i dont think ill have the time to tackle it myself as im really busy at the moment. When i do get it done by a mechanic ill ask him the proccess and will definatly report back and tell you how its done.

That's great thanks, I was worried about fuel pressure, I hear deisel fuel systems can have huge pressure in them and you need to be carefull working on them.

Yeah i guess there will be pressure in there but im not exactly sure how much. But im guessing if the cars switched off etc would there still be a build up of pressure in there?

No idea but sure I've read somewhere that modern deisels have in excess of 2000psi in fuel system if this is true it's not something for an a amateur like me to tackle

The tandem pump on a PD engine doesnt run at huge pressure.

It delivers fuel to the PD elements at around 4bar, similar sort of working pressure as most petrol EFI systems. The fuel is injected into the cylinder by the PD unit at huge pressure, but this pressure only exists inside the engine.

Now it will be easy enough for you to tackle mate, i know its a little off topic i need an undertray for my car which ones best to buy? Or where to buy one from.

hi, just wondering if you got the pump replaced and found out what the process is, i think it should be straight forward to do myself but would like to try and confirm it first

Hello there, on mine it was the actual metal gasket which was at fault, someone had previously messed with it and the kinks within the gasket wernt allowing it to make a tight seal and the diesel was leaking.

So i replaced the seal and this stopped the leak and theres no longer any diesel smell either. Hope that helps.

Cheers for the reply, i was wondering if this was a do it myself job as it is something i am thinking about doing and if i can do it myself and save some money all the better. You didnt happen to find this out or not when you got yours done did you.

Its fairly straight forward i had it done by a local mechanic, as i didnt have much time but according to him its a straight forward job.
