Water issue...

Evening chaps,

Whilst working on the battery issue I came across this;

Earlier today when I removed the upper plastics to gain proper access to the battery I happen to notice standing water, as pictured. It reaches the bottom part of the brake servo. Apologies for the quality it was dark and I refitted the plastics so it was hard to get my phone in there.

I'm sure that Audi in their infinite wisdom didn't design it so water just sat there, surely it drains away somewhere? Is there a drain hole I should be checking to see if it's blocked?

There are 2 bungs in the bottom of the plenum chamber,there are on a B5.5 Passat anyway, they get blocked with mud and leaves and then it fills up with water.
A lot of people just remove the bung completely then it won't block up.
If the level gets too high water can get into the servo. This resulted in a recall for the Passats as when the water freezes it turns to solid ice you then have no brakes.

^This^ is correct one drain is below the servo, and the other below the battery tray. If you have small fingers you can access them without to much bother, if not you can take the battery tray out. I removed my bungs fully and haven't had any problems since.
I didn't know about a servo issue, but I know that water can get in the ecu box and pollen filter and cause trouble that way.
 
Wasn't aware of that at all! Serious problem for Audi I imagine back then! I've found a good 'How to' on the vwaudi forum, which incidentally has been shared on here somewhere. I'll have a good route around in day light tomorrow and clear the bungs out.

Well as expected the bungs where blocked quite badly. I removed the one under the battery tray and gave it a good clean and refitted. The bung under the brake servo was a little trickier to get to so I improvised and just pushed all the gunk through clearing the blockage.
 
What i did was trim the bungs so they're not "closed".

By default the rubber sort of touches together to create a crude seal, but this catches grit and crap and causes it to build up. Some folk simply remove the grommet, i just cut away half the "fingers" bit so it ended up as a simple open hole and refitted it.

the one behind the servo has the clutch line running thru it, so thats somewhat difficult to remove/modify, but i got some wire snippers in and cut a chunk out of it.
