Hi All. Just treated myself to a 60 Plate A4 Avant Technik 170. After enquiring to a couple of local Towbar Businesses I have been given this choice. He says he has not come across any problems with any fault codes coming up using the 7pin box.

The car has Parking Sensors and will only be used for towing a trailer to the tip or carring the bikes on their carrier.

Thanks for all the advise in advance

The only towbar you should consider is the Westfalia with removable hitch, its the same as the factory fit and totally invisible when the hitch is removed. Dead easy to fit, I fitted mine by myself in a couple of hours taking my time. No holes to drill.

My B8 and B8.5 were both wired with a universal 7 pin box. Some people say you should use a box that is connected to the canbus so the car knows when a trailer is attached so it can modify the ABS and ESC and turn off the parking sensors but I dont worry about that and tow an 8x5 enclosed box with a couple of motorbikes in without issue.

The rear sensors do make a row when reversing....

If you have a basic tool kit you can save money and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself

Thanks m8 but too far away. I did one on our last car 10yrs ago ok, but friend did his and car was back in citroen garage for 2 wks. Lots of electricals fried.

I am just a little scared of doing the same after seeing all of the wires and boxes in the Audi. :)

I fortunately managed to buy a car with the factory fitted Westfalia tow bar, It is a great piece of kit and it's nice to know that when I am towing the caravan the car knows it's there and will adjust the ESP to try and help if the car starts snakeing.
For a small trailer to run up the tip the witter bar with the 7 pin plug would be fine. It's what I would fit.
When you are pulling 1300Kg of caravan that needs the extra feeds for the fridge and battery charging then the proper install is the way to go.
You need to get a dedicated kit these days to wire in a towbar, the days of scotchlocks into the wiring loom are no more I am afraid.

Karl.

I did my B8 and B8.5 with scotchloks into the Audi loom for the input wires to the 7 way bypass relay ;)
