Hi I've just taken out my instrument cluster to adjust the temp and fuel gauges as they were offset. When I remove the cluster i noticed that it had amk 69k written on it. Strange as mine is a apy engine not amk.

So this would explain my epc light coming on intermittently. vag com saying ecu/wiring problem!
If the cluster and ecu are from a amk is it possible to code out the vvt as the ecu can't see the vvt. bringing up a fault.

Thanks in advance Ben.

So... To be clear... Your S3 is a prefacelift APY but... You have the clocks and ecu from an AMK in it?

Assuming that there have been no wiring changes then there are all sorts of reasons why you are having issues as neither the clocks or the ecu are compatible out the box...

You need to fit a narrow band ecu and compatible clocks assuming yours is not an AMK with an APY engine fitted... I would also scan for fault codes before making assumptions and post them..

Hi thanks for the reply. Is there any way I can check with vcds to see what ecu i actually have in the car?
The car is a 2000 on a x plate so def not a facelift.

If it was a amk ecu wouldn't the car not run as mine is running ok at the moment and getting 32 mpg.
The only fault code I have is this one! I thought I might ask the question in my first post as it may be the answer I've been looking for?

If it is a amk ecu are the any design differences to the lamba sensor the I could check?
Sorry for all the questions.

Possible Causes
  • EPC Warning Lamp (K132) faulty
  • Wiring/Connectors from/to EPC Warning Lamp (K132) faulty
  • Engine Control Module faulty
Possible Solutions
  • Check EPC Warning Lamp (K132)
  • Check Wiring/Connectors from/to EPC Warning Lamp (K132)
  • Check Engine Control Module

Looks to me like somebody may have bodged the Engine management light.
Does it come on when the ignition is turned on ?.
You can find the part number of the ECU from VAG-COM when you log in as it is shown on the screen when you log into the module.

Karl.

Part number for an APY ECU is 8L0906018K or 8L0906018N if the car has ESP .

Hi I've just been out to the car And got these codes. Vag number 8L0 920 980 R. Extra Wauzzz8L721003083 ---auz7z0a1886979.

If someone has done a bodge is it possible to sort it out using vcds?
Thanks Ben

That part number is for a 170mph S3 set of clocks from a 2001 facelift car.
So looks like the cluster is from a newer car. The wiring for the EPC bulb is different on those clusters. If somebody rewired it then it would operate the bulb but if the original cluster had a bulb and the new one an LED it might see the LED as a faulty bulb, hence the fault code. Just out of interest if you create a fault on the engine that would bring on the EPC light does it come on.
Disconnect the MAF or one of the coils and this should bring the light on.

Karl.
