S3 or Golf R or even an S1?

v8 I am sure there is a R out there with your name on it :)

I really think he should treat himself to one for Christmas and leave us alone.
The constant harping on about it is getting a little tiresome.

^ Don't read a thread with Golf R in the title :p

Simples :)

(We've been through all this in the other thread, lets not go over all that again)

That's a fair comment but do we need constantly reminding that all S3 owners bought the wrong car?
You just seem to take delight in rubbing it in and in and in..............and in

That is also a fair point. That is not the intention.

If I really wanted to do that, I'd start a whole new thread with the title "Golf R Wins 2014 blah blah". And constantly start new threads eulogising Golf R's etc. In the main, I do keep my comments restricted to Golf R specific threads. Fair, no?

id like to think that us S3 owners have the conviction that we bought an S3 for all the reasons important to us, and have the conviction to stand by them.

But also to have an open mind to appreciate other good cars out there. I'm just as praiseworthy of the Fiesta ST, for example. And the AMG's. And some porkers. Why shouldn't we celebrate these good cars (S3's included)?

I do appreciate the point that it can be not what you want to read, but as I'm being constantly reminded, we don't want to fall into group-think. By its very nature, freedom of speech, opinions and views mean that at some point, someone somewhere is going to be offended.

And these days, there is already too much of that going on. People get offended/outraged at seemingly innocuous actions/comments. But that's a rant/topic for another day.

Warren summed it up beautifully (much better than I ever could) in this post. Please do have a read, and if you disagree, that's fine!

Nope and not sure - was a bit surprised actually. Damp road mind.

Honda S2000 tried to have some fun today also. That was even easier ;)

Honda S2000 driver would have been having much more fun.
Very good cars those, brilliantly balanced, with a great engine.

Had the S3 for a day from my local dealership and will be putting in an order Monday morning (through DTD or Carwow).

Golf R going to a lovely home (friend) but very very happy with the S3. Drive I felt is the same but inside and outside looks so much more better. Love the tech pack, SS seats and B&O. The S3 is a far superior car IMHO and I'm looking forward to having one on my drive.

Good on ya pal!

Quite.

Too many people on here get unsettled with their choices !

In other news, EVO Car of the year 2014:

http://www.evo.co.uk/videos/14716/evo-car-of-the-year-2014-the-video
Ferrari 458 Speciale

The standard 458 isn't exactly lacking, but the Speciale still brought the game forward by a whole chunk. Rapid, pointy, and yet still very approachable, can you ever really discount the Prancing Horse these days?

In the real world, how many of us are going to be able to afford one tho'

Plenty for Ferrari to sell them without any issue.

Of course I know what you mean. Hey if I didn't have children or a wife who required a small runabout I probably would get one. Unfortunately other priorities get in the way.

But I like those magazines. Who wants to know about a Dacia duster or a common golf all the time. Oh wait a minutes  the Golf R made that short list, now where is the Audi? :p

Thanks Blackwhite, Merry Christmas too !

Sadly no new cars on the driveway this morning ! Lol!

Sorry to break this to you veeeight.....but, Santa did order you a Golf early September (diligently remembering it would take a good 12-16 weeks to be built). A little present to you for all your insightful and helpful posts on ASN during 2014.

Unfortunatly though, Santa was a victim of lease gate too. The order was cancelled. Apparently Lapland VW also put all their orders through as business instead of retail.

I hear he has some ****** off elves too as he promised them all one (well.....it was a rediculous offer!).

Happy Xmas everyone :)

It's no drivers car from factory granted, much more GT tourer, but then not many Audi's are in my opinion.
I think that adequately sums things right up in a single sentence. Audis take some time and mileage to break in because from new everything feels incredibly stiff and rigid, more so than any other type of car I've ever driven. They're built to get from one end of a country, or continent, to another and the components used and general build reflect it.

I think almost everyone will recommend the S3 over the Golf R - on this Forum. S tronic and DSG are the same, S1 is manual only and IMO not even in the same league as the S3 and Golf R. The S1, nice as it is, I would see as an alternative to a top end mini or such like. In other words, it really is a little girls car. I sat in one at Essex Audi the other day and it did have that 'girlie' feel about it. Nah, not for me. I drove the Golf R and obviously chose the Audi. Way better interior, infinitely better service from the dealer and well, IMO, it looks better too. The tech on the Golf is a bit cheap and cheerful when compared to the Audi MMI. Don't get me wrong, the Golf R is a good car - a mate of mine has just taken delivery of one and we've already had the discussion... he has admitted, nice as his car is, now he's been in my S3, he's slightly jealous. Oh and the sh1t service he's already had from VW is not a good sign - I did warn him! The S3 will hold its value better than the Golf too. I guess if leather and toys don't appeal, the Golf is a cheaper purchase option...

We bought an S1 recently. I have a 911 gen 2 Carrera S, prior to that V8 M3, and race caterham R320s on track.
Every time I drive it I just love the underestimation that this 5 door ' little girl's car' draws.
Some serious egg on face for bullying straight line heroes who (poor darlings) cant quite manage to drive their 400 bhp vehicles properly when the road gets twisty or damp :)

Well I have decided to change my tune after the initial test drive of the S3 less than two weeks ago.

I was of the initial impression that the golf r was the same price for a lesser car (badge snobbery-check) and never gave it a second thought until reading the various comments about the S3's handling issues at speed. It made me begin to wonder if the S3 was for me. I subsequently drove the golf r on Saturday and plan to order one tomorrow.

My thoughts,

The golf instantly felt better on the road taking speed bumps/potholes with ease and it was the first thing my other half commented on sitting in the rear as she wasn't impressed at all with the S3 ride. I never really got to the speeds in the Audi to see if the damping issues are true but all I can say is the golf was very planted and that's was sold it for me. It also has a better noise when in race mode and although I know it's fake it still added to the enjoyment of the spirited drive shall we say.

I went back to Audi straight after the test drive just to be sure I was making the correct choice for me and there is no denying that the S3 is nice with the leather interior, especially with the mono.pur dripping out the door on the specced up showroom model but I didn't jump in it and think yes this is head and shoulders above the golf. It has the edge but both are an improvement over the current creaks and squeaks on the ST. Neither of the seats are as good as my current recaros for support but at least the golf comes with the manual lumbar support which was a nice surprise.

The standard sound system in the golf I found adequate so I crossed off the upgraded dyna audio. In the S3 I felt it was a must to go for B&O. I had Bose in my Mk1 and Mk2 TT's so perhaps I'm being overly harsh on the oem system but I just felt the standard was lacking and from all the positive reviews on here about the B&O I couldn't leave it out.

In the end I've not had to spec much in the R as it comes with all the items I was after in the S3 and more. ACC I can't see me using it but I guess it can be useful for long journeys. The one thing that does come with the golf and I had left out of the S3 thinking it was just a basic system similar to the ST is the electronic parking brake with auto hold function-well worth speccing on the S3!

One thing that does p1ss me off is having to spec advanced telephone just to get the heated windscreen so I had to leave that off in protest!

Anyway I shall now begin my 5 month wait for it to be built - somewhat ridiculous but worth it I feel!

Congrats on deciding... finally..lol.
On the new R models do you not have the option to upgrade to the Recaro's?.. they really are lovely and before getting my s3 i was almost done on a deal for a scirocco with them in it.. they are dreamy and wish could have them in S3. ;-)..

No recaros on the mk7 R for now but they were available on the mk 6......

...... the UK B roads must be entirely different to the crappy B-grade country roads we have here, because there certainly isn't the chalk & cheese difference in handling between the S3 & R that some posters on this forum describe.

No recaros at present mate which is a bit of a joke considering the cost of upgrading the leather. I was going to stomach that one until I saw the base ones in the flesh so it wasn't worth the upgrade to me in the end.

As I said above I can't really comment on the handling side of things as I didn't get to push the S3 the levels required to test it out. I am mainly talking ride quality and although an improvement on some of the Audi's Ive driven I still found it a little harsh at times and that was certainly the view coming from the rear.

Terry, you've done the absolute best thing. Ordered the car you liked most.
A great review of your test drive experiences. I quite liked the Golf too. It certainly had a little more composure when pressing on. But in my case the likes for the S3 outweighed those for the R. The fact that the R is 61mm wider than an S3 also had an effect.

I have driven both and the handling is not chalk and cheese between the two. What is different is high speed damping and steering weighting. They both go round bends very well, it's just easier to be accurate with the front end in the R because the weighting is more consistent.

Personally I think the soundaktor sounds much much better in the S3 where it sounds reasonably good where in the R it sounded cheap and fake to me.

I know the Soundaktor annoys a few golf owners and they end up taking it off the car. Maybe it will annoy me over time but the only saving grace is this is purely a weekend toy :)

The grip off the S3 in the wet is what got me considering changing in the first place so I would still be more than happy with one.

As mentioned it is just a weekend toy though and after discounts we are talking c.£28k vs c.£33k so it was a no brainer for me to choose the 'cheaper' option.

I turned down the soundaktor via vcds. But I'm kind of missing it so will turn it up again to probably 65%.

I got to tell you. I had to go out this morning to take my niece to the train station. Roads are super icy around here on top of the chilterns. Awd or not, I did turn off the Pedalbox and got out of race mode to turn down the madness.

Still sure footed but better be safe than not. But damn I forgot how much lag there is on these standard cars. I'd really recommend having a New Years shop at DTUK.

What's the coding for this?

It's the last module, A9, and its a percentage scale. 0 to 100%.
Adaptation
Channel of Structure borne sound actuator
And there's a test mode (sine wave frequency sweep) which is quite fun when the neighbours are around ;)
