Hi everyone I'm new on here

I already posted hi in the main section

I bought a 2.5 quattro saloon a couple of days ago and for the price I can't grumble but have issues that need sorting,

First of all driving home I noticed that my temp doesn't go that high. I gathered the thermostat is stuck open. Can that be done alone or do I need to change the cam belt to do this.

The second issue is the gearbox. It crunches in 2nd gear. Is there any difference between 2.5 gearbox with or without quattro?

Apart from that the car drives beautiful. Nice and smooth. Needs a bit of tlc though.

Any help on my 2 questions would really be appreciated . Thanks

Most would do the belts and waterpump with the stat. Are you sure its the stat?Does the heater work well and soon?If so could be worth changing the CTS.Dont know about the box

Temp goes down when heating comes on. So I took it as the stat.

Can I get to it easy enough without changing belts etc

Nope. Not an easy 5 minute job on the 2.5 V6. The stat is behind the timing belt and near the water pump. So it's best to replace all the belts, pulleys, tensioner, water pump and stat at the same time.

It needs to be done competently.Where are you?

Bit far from the man in N>London who does a great job.He took about 5hrs on mine but that included careful tuning. When was the job done before?Might still be the CTS if the heater Comes on good and early.Check the rad to seeif that is still cold which should mean the stats OK cos if was stuck open the rad will heat up with rest

I don't know when the job was done previously. It's definitely something I want done asap don't want any bent valves.

Iv seen one of these out. Looks like a right job to do... Am Considering doing it myself.

Which battery does the key fob take. I changed it using the same number as the one previously in but the buttons aren't working still. There were different kinds I'm the shop. 3023 and 3033 maybe of something.

Yes it needs to be done but needs experience and all the tools incl VAGCOM to time it right. The first owner of mine paid cash for a botched job so it never ran right and when it was done again we found the timing over a notch out .Now its perfect. The key may need reprogramming .I think you lock and hold it locked but theres stuff on this here

As said check the CTS before the stat. Mine acted as if the thermostat was gone when j first got it, temp used to drop when on the motoway and with the heating on. Changed the CTS and the temp stays at 90. Very easy to get to and only takes a couple of mins to change! Only used a genuine one though as I bought a cheapie from eBay and it acted the same as the old one, genuine worked fine

Fob will need programming if you have changed the battery, East to do. Put it in the ignition and press the unlock button or lock button on the fob and that will be it!

Yeah, as mentioned above, front end needs to be pulled forward with belts removed to replace the thermostat.
I have done a few belts on the 2.5TDi aswell as timing the fuel-pump correctly using VCDS.
Last one I did was mine after a seized waterpump a few months ago.

I would recommend changing the cambelt, aux-belts, waterpump & tensioners at the same time.

Im in Liverpool, which isnt massivley far away, if you want mates rates for the work then let me know.

No the - goes to the spring contact. If you look inside the cover it has + inside it, so + on battery to + in cover!!

That's what I did. + to +

I found something that said I have to stick the key in the door, press the button and turn left then right. And then leave.

But I'm unsure which button to press. Is it lock button or unlock cuz I take it it's not he boot open button.

Do I need to turn the ignition how long do I keep the button pressed for ?

I just had a go at synchronising as per manual on and it's not working still. Any ideas what that could be ?

What's this vag com. Iv seen a few different scanning tools on the bay.

I have my own bluetooth adapter and torque pro on my phone which reads information and fault codes etc

Do I need vag com to program key then if my synchro doesn't work ?

I found a few different ways. Tried them all. No luck.

Any knowledge on whether I need a gearbox off a quattro or we ab

These 2.5tdi s can hurt as they get older and cheaper to buy but the bills stay big.I would try a g/box oil change with some Molyslip which can help. The key might need a specialist to reprogram and maybe supply a new one.Again not cheap

I would prefer the cheaper option ie oil change.

So these gearboxes aren't sealed as I was lead to believe.

An gearbox will benefit in time from an oil change. If you have a synchro problem it is the only option apart from a change or rebuild. It helped me with a Bora V5 that had become notchy after 170k

All belts pulleys stat coolant sensor water pump etc is changed car is running nice a hot inside

As for the gearbox All of a sudden there is no crunches everything is smooth.

Strange. I will be keeping an eye out and I have a few quotes from different people with re con on the gearbox until then I'll carry on driving as normal

Plans to put in aftermarket intercooler and upgrade the air filter then remap and s line kit and hope to fine a pair of rs4 front seats at a bargain
