Right a question for all you 3.0 Tdi Avant owners, What size/spec battery have you got ? the one on mine is 77amp 780Ah, it's getting a bit lazy on a cold morning now, would a Yuasa 900amp 100Ah be ok ?
It's an 05 btw

I would have thought a 77Ah battery would be a bit small for a 3.0 TDI. I used to have a bigger battery than that on my 1.9 TDI Passat.
The 3.0 TDI B8 I have has a 110Ah battery in the boot. A 900 amp 100AH battery sounds more like it assuming it will fit where the battery is located. Is the battery in your car the original or a replacement being as it is 9 years old ? .

Karl.

No clue whatsoever Karl, it's a Bosch so probably assume it's a replacement, the yuasa I'm looking at is HSB019 recommended by Halfrauds.

Mine's a Unipart GBA3110, fitted about two years ago at my garage after the car had to be recovered from the underground car park at work. According to a google search, it is rated at CCA 680 and 75AH. I have no idea what that means, but it works a treat.

The B8 will have larger batteries due to the fact the battery is further away and some also have stop/start. I opted for the Bosch S5 (5 year warranty) when purchasing my battery. It's rated at 110Ah and 830CCA so it's more than I would ever need to be honest.

Yes Karl it's the one in the link, i know it's more money but I've used Yuasa for a long time & there a good battery, you get what you pay for, just need to check the height to make sure the cover will still fit over it.

Well a warning to all of you, DON'T believe Halfrauds battery fitting advise section, for my car they say the Yuasa HSB019 fits, It doesn't, 50mm to long & about 15mm to deep.

They are terrible , a mate got one and the terminals were the wrong way round that would of suited a previous model.

Question: do Audi or VAG have a list specifying minimum batter type/requirements for each engine type ?

My 2.0tdi Cabriolet has a Moll battery which says 12v 380A 72Ah DIN, 640A EN/SAE, and have no idea if this is correct for the car.....or how old it is.
.

Was in Halfrauds this afternoon & informed the guy behind the counter that the battery that they say on their website fits my car DOESN'T, yeh i know he said lots of others are the same, !!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought couple of weeks ago ZNAJDER-AGM 95AH/780A
My car is A4 2.7 tdi. Starts nice with that even here in Finland. Without any pre-heating.

I have they yuasa in my cab as mine was struggling to start on cold mornings, I would recommend if it's the right one for your car as I'm not sure. I am pleased I paid the extra to get the more powerful one and they also chucked in a car cleaning kit

With apologies for hijacking your thread, does anyone have experience of the Lion battery from ECP. At less than £50 and a 3 year warranty it seems like a no-brainer for my 2.0 (petrol).

Pay the bit extra and get a Varta, Bosch etc. They are cheap for a reason. It's not as if a quality battery is twice the price, it's not.

Aye, as with everything. With more apologies for the second hi-jack, I ended up with one of Halfords mid-range offerings. Which I believe may be made by Yuasa.

I could have got a Bosch a bit cheaper from ECP but I knew the battery was dying and the blasted thing had failed to start in the morning. I gave it 20 mins on the charger which did the trick and trundled off ( now late!) to a meeting after which I was left in the embarrassing situation of having to get a jump start from the guy I was with. Given it was raining, and I suspected I'd end up doing my back in lifting the battery out and in, Halfords was a simpler solution. It ended up being a two-man job would you believe, with me showing him how to access the bolt, and me holding the wiring conduit out of the way so he could get at the bolt. What a faff.

The guy who did the job didn't seem to be in any way concerned that the breather pipe couldn't be connected as the peculiar T-shaped Audi fitting wouldn't fit the small round breather hole in the new battery. OK, so it's in a well ventilated place but even so. Neither did he remember to provide me with the blanking plug which is apparently removable from one of the new battery's terminal covers and is supposed to be fitted in the other hole. There are two, I guess to accommodate different layouts.

Still, it was worth the £10 and a little extra cost on the battery to have them do it given the overall hassle for such a simple job. A rummage in my odds and ends bin produced a suitable plug, and some minor surgery to a washer pipe jointing piece provided a fitting which fitted the battery and the breather pipe once I'd cut the T fitting off. Just so anyone contemplating a battery change by Halfords knows what to expect.

And yes, I know all about Halfords' techs technical ability.

personally im replacing mine after xmas as its still using the original battery from factory. Just going to audi for a replacement battery to be sure the right battery is used and at least then its got an audi warranty

I would check out the cost of a replacement battery from Audi. You may have an Audi Warranty and an Audi sticker on the battery but I bet it will be at least twice the cost of a Varta 5 yr warranty battery from ECP or similar.

Audi warranty , probably only honour it if you keep FSH with a main stealer, lol.

Any amperage of 90 or above will be fine. What is more important is the CCA (cold cranking amps) which is the power delivered at cold start. I have recently fitted a Duracell battery and it has been perfectly okay and cost me £58 inc Trade from TPS. Cheaper batteries with names you've never heard of should be avoided and get the longest warranty poss and keep the receipt with the service book.
