Scott's Akoya Silver A8

Have had thoughts about that but I'm trying to keep the weight down where possible. I'll price up all options then I'll come up with something. It will look good whatever I do.

Cheers

Found something cool out today.

If I hold both front window switch up/down all windows and roof with open/close.
No need for the ignition to be on or anything.

Fitted a chrome light switch knob from a A3 8P.

Complements the chrome/ally really well I think.

I want some more now.

Hi Scott,
just wandering if you tried the boot remoteclose mod yet? I'm itching to do it but still looking for a trunk motor before I do it as mine is temperamental.

Not yet mate.
Been doing other things.

Its on my list but rather low on my list sadly.
If I get time one weekend I'll have a bash.

Popped in to Audi to get 2 new tyres, while there I mentioned the large Audi branded umbrella.
They said they will sort me out with one, I was expecting to pay the £30-£50 for one but when I was walking out to the car with the service rep he said he put one in the car for me and don't worry about paying.

I was happy.

Here's some pics.

Badge in the base and a protective cover.

Check out the Audi branding. Next stop baseball cap and jacket!!

And a video.

The joys of half day Fridays mean I can add these switches to my 8.

Switches added.

Sadly the master switch from 8P lacks the individual child locks like the 8 and they are so massively different I can't swap bits overseas. With 8P unit in it the child locks and window locks still works.
I'm working on a different master switch so I can keep the individual switches.

The switches are from a 2012 A3 8P and all plug and play.
The drivers side is an issues but as above I got a plan.

Got some more chrome touches in the works.
Hope fully in a week or two.

It looks like it could be a pain but can the switches or switch covers not just be swapped over?

The internal of the caps are different and the switch mech is totally different.
As you can see on the pictures.
I did try it and you can even clip the caps down.

A6 switches should be here next week and I'll try again.
I got a B8 switch in the garage and the internals of that looks the same as the 8P.
So hopefully the A6 should be. If not, I might have to go all A6 to keep them matching.

Ordered a A6 master switch off ebay (PN: 4G0 959 851) as it had the correct dead lock buttons and in the hope the internals are the same as the 8P unit, so the caps can be swapped over.

Stripped the door down again and removed the 8P master switch.
Removed the caps from both switches and swapped them over.
The internals are identical and caps fitted fine.

I rebuilt the arm rest and fitted the door car back to the car.

A3 8P switch.

A6 Switch

You can see the slight shape difference on the child lock buttons.

All fitted and chormed up.

I'm now left with these switches.

Nice, I wanna do that myself now.

How much were the A6 Switches, would the actual A6 caps fit in the A8 door mould? They don't look any bigger, just a different shape with more brushed alloy.

Its the A3 8P caps you want, if you want the thin bit of chrome at the front of the switches or the A4/A6 switches if you want the curved chrome look.
But the caps are not interchangeable.
The internals are two different. That was the first thing I tried so ended up going down this route.

The A3 switches in total was about £120 new from Audi.
The A6 switch was £30 off ebay.

Do you have independent rear child locks?

Looks real nice, what model are the paddles and alloy edged switches from and was it fairly easy to swap? How careful did you have to be with the Air Bag, I'm guessing you disconnected the Battery to do this?

The paddles and switches are from a S5.
Very easy to replace.
Remove the airbag, slide the switches out, undo the torx bolts for the paddles and you're done.

There are two types of paddles. the ones with the white plug and the ones with the black plug. We need the ones with the black plug.

As for the air bag. I just made sure the ignition is off.

The airbag is not as scary as the internet makes it out to be.
Unless you detonate it.

Got some larger brakes fitted today.

New on the left, old on the right.

Been having an intermittent brake pad warning light come up on my dash for the last 6 months.
It would come on, go off, come off and go off for days or weeks but then it would come again.

Popped over a mates place and had a look at the cables and they all seemed to be stretched, the brackets also appeared to be bent to release some of the strain from the stretched cables.
I priced up the option of new pads and brackets and this totaled to pretty much the same cost as going larger brakes.

Found a set of 360mm brakes from a member on another forum, made a deal, sorted out a date and popped down.

Parked the 3.0TDI behind a W12, jacked it up and removed the wheels ready.

Old brakes removed and sat next to the new ones to compare sizes.

Some time later and the new 360s was fitted and wheels was on.

Looking good and feeling good so far.
Next is larger rear brakes so they don't look so silly when compared to the fronts.

Popped in to my mates workshop to last week to get my old pipes removed and get some new ones fitted.

The tool to remove the old pipes.

Pipe/s off.

Old vs new.

Old tail pipes off.

Gave them a bit of a polish.

Cutting.

Side cut?

Down cut?

In the end I decided on this.

We ran out of time and had to vacate the workshop.

The exhaust tips on my car now looks like this.

That was done over a week ago.
Its taken a while to get the new tips on properly because we've been waiting for some laser cut end caps to connect the pipes to the exhaust but time ticking away and MOT on saturday gone we rushed it a little bit and got them fitted on Friday.
I'll go back and get them all properly fitted when the end caps arrive.

For now they look like this.

I'll get some better pics when its all done properly.

Very nice Scott! Bit of a step up from the A4

A slight up grade from a 98 A4. :)

Just a little post to show some minor additions I added this morning.

First off is a set of sills with Audi on them.
Found them on eBay by A8Parts, put in a cheeky offer which they accepted. Happy days.

Been sat in my garage for several weeks due to time and weather.
got round to fitting this morning.

Easy enough to do, pull the old off and push these on.

Next is something I spoted that the 8V owners have started fitting.
it's a Audi 12V blank. About £4 from Audi. Part number A4H0 919 311.

Old

Installed the Dash cam yesterday.

Hi Scott, could I ask how you pull down the unit for the roof electronics please? been meaning to get elsawin open but it's on my other laptop which I won't get too till Friday, also is the supply from that connector a switched or permenant live?

I'm toying whether to use a permenant live as sometimes it's nice to leave the camera on if i park it somewhere a bit shady, thanks in advance

P.s did you sort out the part numbers for the door led strips as I have them somewhere I'll have to dig them out though, oh and just as you never mentioned it, I guess you know with your car being a facelift you need to fit the circulation pump to your Webasto for park heating to work, as it is it'll be firing up, warming what is in the heater then shutting down, there is also a valve on PF I think like mine that directs the heated water to cabin only but guessing it's a right faff and dash out job, it's better without I'd say as it'll protect the engine more.

Burnzy,
Remove the two big lenses from the light. There you'll see two torx bolts. One in each lens. Remove them and the unit will pull down.

It's a switched feed.
I know what you're saying about leaving it on but it will drain your battery in under a week I think.
Sidibear had it happen go him on his A4.

Door LED strip?
The ambient lighting strips?
I asked stoke Audi for a quote and its in that post.
In the end I used a strip from a front door and cut it to length.

I've been looking in to the heater a bit more. I found a pump on eBay and the pipe work needed.

That valve that splits the heater is good but a pain to fit and not something I'll be under taking.
Recirculating pump only I think.

Thanks for the quick reply, I need to use a bit more gusto then as I tried the lenses but was afraid to break something haha!

I'll have a ponder over what to do regarding the feed I didnt want to leave it running 100% of the time I'd of just liked the option, but then again I take mine out the car when parked at home.

I will be using one of these to power it
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=191325301159
Saves all the mess and can be neatly tucked out the way.

did you have an issue with getting a rear light strip? Or just found one at right price.

Your better off without tbh as it'll also warm the engine block at same time reducing wear on the engine, my e39 worked this way without issue.
Just food for thought, on my e39 I fitted a GSM relay box instead of telestart, so no matter where I was I could txt the car and it'd turn the heater on and the car would be nice and toasty when I got too it, I kept my relay box when I sold the e39 so will probably fit it to the audi when I'm bored and the weather gets better.

My camera took a direct 12v. So it's just a cable.there's enough room up there for that little box and if you take it out when you're home, I would not worry bout it being on all the time.

The lights do only pop out one side first. I can't remember which side though.

I can set timers in MMI and hopefully I don't need the telestart style box.
If I do I'd go for the cheaper remote option. The text version would be over kill really.

Thanks for the help Scott, GSM telestart was just food for thought as I can see you like to have a bash at things :)

Good luck with the rest of the build, it's looking good and going well so far, might throw a few pictures up on my own thread at some point as it'd be rude not too.

Hi Scott,

could not find the answer. Did you manage to fix problem with your boot lid? I've bought my A8 3 months ago and have same issue.....

Saw a post on another forum about a bumper change, Also what is the black round plastic bit next to the headlight switch on the first photo don't remember that on my old A8?

Saw a post on another forum about a bumper change, Also what is the black round plastic bit next to the headlight switch on the first photo don't remember that on my old A8?

It's the ignition.
I made a blank for it as I never use it.

Mate is replacing his bumper which is in better condition than mine and the same colour.

Have to say I never used the key when I had my A8, think that's why I forgot it was there. My bumper & lights where looking very tired, and like yours was covered in stone chips, so decide to go down the facelift route. Is that what your mate's doing?

On the final pick is that the washer jet?

Mates gone S8. His is the same year as mine, same colour but reaprayed less than a year ago. So it should all bolt on and match with hopefully very little colour difference.

The barrel was annoying me, so I got a block of aluminum, spun it to size, fitted a blank key in the back and wrapped in Matt wrap. Works well I think.

Yeah it's a fan style washer jet from a skoda.
I fitted washer jet adapters to make them fit.

It should match just fine + bumpers never are a 100% match.

What was the reason for stripping the upright out, and did you have any problems with the pinch bolt. I'm going to replace all the front arms this month so interested to know if you had any issues.

I had massive issues. Did the two top mounts on both sides. Both sides was a *******.
Replaced the drivers up right but it was wrong. So had to strip it all down again and get my original one repaired and refitted.
