In the market to buy a new car. Have looked at many options. Fun, sport looking cars such as Peugeout RCZ, audi TT, Mini. But due to price and other factors I have mainly focused on the 3 familymembers; Seat Leon, Golf 7 and Seat Leon.
Right now looking at used audi a3 (new version 8v) 3 door hatch 122 tsi ambition. However, a bit concern about the tire noise. During test drive I found the tire sound to be quite loud and with a rather unpleasant pitch. And, when searching on “audi a3 and tire noise” quite a few comments come up. And some claim that changing tires will not help. Any experience or knowledge about this area?. If not for the tire noise, I feel ready to buy the car (I like the design eventhough I do find it a bit too “cooperate/serious”, a bit boring and less fun).
I also test drove seat leon sc style. It has great looks, but not to too fund of the interior. Got a better feeling sitting in the audi. And have also read reviews mentioning squeak and rattles from Seat dashboard. I also this experienced during a test drive. The noise level in the Seat is maybe slightly louder as windnoise is more apparent. But the overall noise type was more pleasing to my ears than the audi tire noise. However, the qualiy, interior design, and the fact that seat might be more difficult to sell later makes me prefer audi over seat . The Seat outside design is however very nice.
An alternative could be Golf 7 tsi highline or comfort line. I have test driven this, an also read many comments that they have less tire noise, but the design is less appealing to me. I need the car for commuting and we only need the front seats. The audi is a bit more sporty looking and more rounded which I prefer. The sporty GTI is too expensive in the country I live in so this is not an option.
Most comments I have read indicates that the audi has more tire noise than golf, but the link below shows the overall noise level is the opposite? Should the Audi A3 tire noise be a concern and keep me from buying the A3.

You need to appreciate that the A3 is fundamentally a very stiff car, even taking the tyres out of the equation. If you want to reduce tyre noise you need to not go for the models with lower profile tyres for starters. But also, tyre noise is hugely dependent on tyre design - perhaps you drove a car with an especially noisy tyre? You could swap out the existing tyres for something quieter like the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx RT which are designed to be very low noise.

Thanks for quick respons. The tires on the test car was dunloop (but not sure what type). When you mention avoid models with lower profile tyres does, does that include the ambitions model that has 17 inch tyres.

The A3 comes with 16, 17 or 18" wheels, depending on model. Mine is 17" with the factory fit (for the UK) Continental tyres and although vastly quieter than my previous Honda, it's still not what I'd call quiet. Road surface makes a hell of a difference to tyre noise too. I'd be looking to move to a quieter tyre when these need replacing.

I found those Dunlops very noisy over rough surfaces on my A3 on 16" wheels. Almost as bad as the previous Pirelli Cinturato on 17"s.

I've currently got Nokian D3 winter tyres fitted which are a lot quieter.

I'm not suggesting you buy a Ford but the Focus is a really quiet car to travel in........
Road surfaces have a lot to do with it, but I'd put up with it from an Audi for the better build quality. (?)

Turn the radio up......

The RCZ has a lot of Tyre Noise - 19" wheels.

I don't really hear the noise of the Tyres on my A3 and they are also 19".

Depends what you're tuning your ears into !!
You can hear all sorts of weird and wonderful noises if you are so inclined.

As above, nice tunes on the Audio System always cover a multitude of erroneous stuff

:music:

my miss's has got an a3 sportback sport with 18 inch dynamic alloy wheels and continental 5 tyres and I was surprised how quiet the road and tyre noise was compared to my mk6 golf gt tdi, and I have just put on 17 inch alloys with winter tyres and its still quiet.

I've got Dunlop MaxxRT tyres that came as standard on my A3 which is running 17" alloys on SE suspension and I personally find them quiet. On my previous A3 on the same wheel 17" alloys and SE suspension I had Hankook Ventus S1 evo K107 tyres and they were also quiet. I find so much depends on the road surface.

On part of the A421 around Bedford the original part of the road was very noisy but the newer section was much quieter. You really noticed the change when you went from one surface to the other. The noisiest road I've been on for quite a while is the M5 north of Bristol.

Our A3 is not only a diesel, but also a soft top with 18" wheels on Conti 2 tyres and I find it exceptionally quiet. That said, our last car was a 2004 Fiesta TDCi, so I suppose anything new would be quiet by comparison.

As far as I'm concerned the a3 is a reasonably quiet car to be, as quiet as my focus was. Of course tyre noise is more down to the road surface....

My old MK3 Focus on 18" wheels had *way* more noise from the wheels than my current A3 (on 17" wheels). A Focus with the smaller standard wheels may well be much quieter again though.

The A30 dual carriageway from Honiton to Exeter is supposed to be one of the noisiest roads in the UK but even with 18" wheels and Continental tyres I don't find my A3 bad at all. Bit noisier now I've got hearing aids though :D

I'll just give you a tip: it's only an opinion it doesn't mean it's right..

I have a SEAT Ibiza at the moment until my A3 arrives.

The dashboard has a bad rattle (inside)
All plastics are cheap, door handles creak when closing door, all around fit and finish is a bit meh with flexible parts that should not flex, I can move the centre console about a bit, just seems like the factory forgot to screw something together... General rattles literally everywhere driving down the road
The seat creaks round corners and it drives me mad
Suspension noises to high hell and countless parts failing, sport suspension is very wallowy on it (no engine problems)
Gear box is quite crunchy sometimes
Windows rattle

Not saying all SEATS are like that, and probably some of them are to blame for the previous owner.. I'm the 2nd owner and after a year of owning I've had enough, the garage I bought it from was also awful at saying the car had nothing wrong with it when clearly it did when I coughed up over 800 quids worth of suspension parts to fix the previous owners reckory

Obviously the ibiza is different to the Leon, I have sat in a Leon Cupra and found it fairly nice with big improvements over my car for build quality but didn't make me regret ordering the A3

I find that hard to imagine, the a180 has awful concrete parts that are a racket and if your on the hands free your ******** since nobody can hear you over it... Then again we are in box vans.

That must be a horrible road if that's the case haha
