If you hadn't bought an S3 (any variant) what would it have been...?

After reading the thread about what people don't like about their A3/S3, I'm interested to hear other people's thoughts as I've tried other cars but always ended up back in an S3.
This time around I priced up the R, BMW 330xdrive touring, a45 AMG and even a new Disco Sport. Varied mix but for me it's the all round package vs price vs residuals. Pricewise nothing came close to the S3 (apart from the R which was cheaper but there's no chance in few years there'd be any equity left in it). I even looked at prices for the GTi, Leon and Octavia VRS but for the money the S3 made so much sense...and it looks beaut.

I was very tempted with the SQ5

Then I test drove it, and found the gearbox to be just as laggy as the box on my old A6.
Such a waste of an amazing engine!!!

Although I have heard a rumour that there will be a gearbox remap available soon based on the RS6 box.

On my consideration list with the S3 were:
C63 AMG
E92 M3
Cayman
Leggy 997 c4s

Went with the S3 as i felt it was the best all round compromise, could have it new, not extorinate to run tax or insure, has a boot, I preferred the idea of awd over rwd.

I test drove the Fiesta ST-3, the Cupra 280, the A45 and the Golf R along with the S3 this year. (Also tested the S1 but ruled it out within minutes of driving it for a number of reasons)

I wanted a new car on a PCP with a reasonable sized deposit and I wanted under £350 monthly payments. I also wanted a reasonable prospect of equity after 2 yrs to use for the next one. I wanted something that was fast, entertaining, practical-ish, sounded good and was a nice place to sit when just cruising about. I also wanted a good level of kit and sound system. I wanted something to do me 3 years and then I could look at an RS3, Golf 400, new TTRS or even an RS4/RS5 with an expected higher budget next time around.

If it was just a throw about cheap run around I really wanted I would have gone with the Fiesta ST. It was brilliant fun but the interior was worse than Halfords with the 199 button stereo and cheap plastics. Next and a serious contender until residuals were taken into account was the Cupra 280. Again, seriously good fun to drive and throw around and the interior was about the same build wise as the Golf R. But the GFV was £9k for a car spec'd at £30k and the monthly repayment was higher than the R and S3 and almost as much as the A45.
A45 was just too expensive and the interior irked me. Had it been more in line with the R and S3 cost wise and build wise I might have been tempted more. The R & S3 were the final choices and obviously the S3 won out for a few reasons that were important to me at the time. I'm not going to get into the whole R&S3 thing again, been done to death on this forum.

I considered the CLA45 but it's too expensive for me and the S3 gearbox is superior. Lexus IS350 F-Sport was close but I decided I didn't care for the front grille styling. Bimmers are a dime a dozen around here and I wanted something a little more unique. For me the S3 pushes all the right buttons.

I looked at the R but thought it was a bit plastic looking inside. SLK looked dated inside. Fiesta ST cheap. I'd also looked at the new BMW 2 series which was nice, loved the Pug RCZ but that came in way more than a Z4! After an extended test drive I opted for the BMW Z4, BUT even though I sent the salesguy two emails stating the spec I wanted and ASKING "When is the best time to come in and order?" he didn't reply!!! Then on a weekend break with the wife I saw a black 3 door A3 outside the hotel and we both thought it looked nice, it was at that point we looked in at Audi on the way home...the rest is history :)

Even after I had ordered the S3 I sent BMW an email out of courtesy to let them know to take me off their system and thanking them for their help, ending with "If I look at BMW again in the future I'll come back and see you"...Yet I still never got a reply! Because of that experience I'll never go near BMW again. All emails I've sent to Audi have been answered fast...some in as little as 2 minutes!!! ;)

I'd still be driving my old Golf V6! I didn't consider any other car.

Probably would've been the Leon Cupra 280 for me. Had a mk2 Cupra and it was great. The only other car that took my fancy was a Volvo V40 T5 but the wife decided i wasn't old enough for that yet.

Si :)

If Mitsubishi had kept making the Evo, I'd have bought another Evo X FQ330 SST to replace my 2011 one I sold to buy the S3. Before buying the S3, I did consider seriously consider buying an M1, but preferred the drive of the S3 and on reflection now, glad I made the decision. S3 is my first Audi, and won't be the last.

I had a look at the Merc A45 AMG, but ride, interior and price put me off, also looked at BMW X3, but decided it was too old person for me, RS Q3 nice but looks a little dated now, maybe in a few years time.
Could not get a deal on the new TTS cab, so ordered an S3 for delivery in March, will probably keep it for 2 years.

Did consider a B8.5 S4 saloon, but wanted to downsize a bit from my then current B.8 A4, so the S3 saloon won :thumbs up:

Mind you, I had ordered a 5 door Golf R in June at the height of the Leasegate scandal, only for VW to cancel my order along with 2800 other Golf R orders in June

If I didn't get the S3 and the 3.0 S5 was in high 20s I would have probably gone down that route. I liked the M3 but it's too hardcore for me and not as well rounded as the S3.

I probably would still be driving my old car. Volkswagen Jetta. :meeting:

I was looking into a Skyline GTR. However it has only two seats in the back as the centre one is taken up with speakers so that was me out as I need the 3 seats for the kiddos.

I would have kept my 12 year old corolla, just fixed all the issues that annoyed me, rather than telling the car that the day after my S3 comes the breaker will be selling it off piece by piece!

Golf R or S3, as I had an 8V A3 at the time I was well aware of the differences between the R and the S3 interiors and ride and handling, although apparently I bought the wrong one I'm more than happy with it and would pick the same again.

I looked at M135i and A45 AMG along with the S3.

In all honesty - if I could have got Mrs Pulp to sign it off, I would be driving the A45 AMG. Whatever you say about it - it is an "event" to drive. It was a riot and Mrs Pulp loved it (she never gets excited about cars). However the £7k deposit and £600 a month repayments killed the dream.

I will just add also that I test drove a 8V TDI 184 quattro s-tronic when I ordered my S3 and it isn't often a car impresses me as much as that did. Fantastic all rounder......

I drove the SQ5 as well and ultimately found it still felt like a SUV

I recently replaced my S3 with this, so guess this might have been what I would have had:

Spent a long time looking at the A3 and then S3 soft tops. Unfortunately Audi were so slow bringing the quattro variants and S3 to market I gave up waiting.

well being from a family who have had Audi's A4's and A6's for the last few years 2009+ it was inevitable that I would end up with one not that I didn't consider something else!

It had to be fast like sub 6s to 60, subtle i.e no overly in your face massive spoilers and body kit like the Subaru's, at my age drawing attention to yourself is only going to end up one way with a fine and points!!!!!
so things I considered:

Audi S3 manual and S-tronic 5doors - need I say more?

Mercedes A45 AMG - a little too pricey for another 60bhp and 0.3s faster to sixty plus the residuals aren't as strong! gearbox torque limitations for remapping???

BMW 135i - really like the engine in this but the interior is just horrible the plastics feel hard and the refinement on the buttons etc just isn't up to the Audi standard. I have a best friend who has a 118i 5dr 2012 plate and there simply is no way you could get 4 adults in it without being crunched up like you are in a Peugeot 106!

Vauxhall Astra - huge fan of the 2.0L petrol engines they produce (my father has one in his seven that revs to 9000rpm sounds like a dream!)
just not quite fast enough to 60 for me plus front wheel drive the under-steer and wheel spin just trying to lay down any kind of power in the wet would be hopeless! worth an absolute pittance after 4years plus they want nearly 27grand for one anyway! not subtle enough sticks out like a sore thumb and has "youth" plastered all over it!

Vauxhall Corsa - too small for my needs same problems as the Astra plus no where near fast enough and would feel like a downgrade to my current 8P A3!

Ford Focus ST - no RS version available, yet again front wheel drive, like the exterior styling but the interior is 3-5 years behind IMO plus how many fords are built every year and they are absolutely everywhere getting a little long in the tooth needs a refresh!

Ford Fiesta ST - a colleague at work has a 3dr 1.3L, a great car for the money but the two/three tone dash, the number of buttons makes you feel like your in a 747 from the 1970's! cheap hard plastics everywhere no color screens just mono tonal, no where near enough power again front wheel drive!

VW - Golf R - as its exactly the same chassis power train and engine and shares most of the same components with the S3, this would be the cheaper option to the S3 but with the rental cars being available so cheap the residuals in a few years time could be questionable, I'm a bit of a badge snob :audibash:, plus people know Audi is the premium brand and are more impressed with an Audi than a VW. price wise by the time I specced the golf up against the S3 it was near enough the same price!

VW Golf GTI - 217BHP in a GTI that weighs 1.5tons isn't enough to be called a "hot hatch" these days, I'd have bought a A3 2.0tdi 184 and remapped that and it would be quicker and alot more economical too not half the options I want on it so the price would soon shoot up!

VW - Polo GTI- too small for my needs many of my colleagues have polo's in varying guises 189bhp .... front wheel drive .... at the time the new GTI hadn't been released so it was the older pre facelift model and its ok for the money but nothing to shout home about!

I did consider a few 3.0 diesel models BMW, Audi ,Mercedes etc etc but wanted away from the diesels as they don't make me feel like just going out for a drive plus I like revs .....

could go on about Seat (Leon, Ibiza) Renault (Megane, Clio) but hopefully you get the idea of what I was looking for!

Similar to most folk above, shortlist was an S3, Golf GTi/D/R and a 330D X-drive. Didn't like the interior of the VW's as much as the Audi, and the 330D was too expensive.

Now I've had the S3 for 6 months or so, I am disappointed in the lack of instant go under 2K revs, the throttle response (even in dynamic) and the noise.

If I hadn't bought the S3, I'd be back looking at an E92 M3, C63 AMG or possibly a 911 (997) but with the mileage I do (mostly town as well) I'd probably talk myself out of them due to steep running costs.

My 2 choices were Scirocco R and the S3. S3 ticked more boxes so opted for that instead. Surprisingly there are not that many cars out there that I really wanted/liked look of and that are affordable.. Lottery win then different story but for a day to day thing and combining power, comfort and a little class/style then S3 works. :)

Initially my heart was set on an a200 amg until I drove one. It was slow and not that economical not to mention the options and standard equipment were a joke compared to the s-line. Also the salesman tried to railroad me into a deal but I do rate it as a very good looking car!

SQ5 on Porsche Macan... If either had been available at the time I ordered :-/

Yes the 330d is wayyyy too expensive. Mate has had one two years with a fairly good spec. Paid £36k for it (after discount) and just been offered £17.5k trade in. £7k negative equity.

He is wishing he bought an S3

Cayman or F-type Jag - but wife doesn't like 2 seater sports cars. Next maybe an XE S as she does like this type of Jags!

would have bought a M135, but in Oz the BMW is at almost $15,000 more expensive than the S3,
or maybe an R, but we only get the ugly Cadiz wheels (no other options) and the 5.8" Discover system and it's not significantly cheaper than an S3, given the ugly wheels and not quite top of the range Discover system

if I didn't need a family friendly car, then that's a whole new ball game .

So I picked mine up yesterday and it's pretty f'in awesome! Affirmed that I made the right call on an S3 and it's a massive improvement on the 8P in my opinion.
Love the advanced key (hope it doesn't get nicked)
Love the auto folding mirrors.
Love the SS Seats.
Love the 10-spoke titanium wheels with Sepang...
Love the adaptive lights, the junction light it pretty handy where I live.
MMI working pretty well with iphone / spotify / SD cards - I uploaded some films on to the SD card, some worked some didn't but I'll sort then when I can be bothered.
I was a bit worried I'd made a bad call NOT getting mono.pur, but it really doesn't bother me.
Struggling to keep it away from the red line until it's run in. However, I took the long way to work this morning :) to add a few miles on.

You and me both, now I have a dog car (i.e. to transport the dogs) not entirely convinced I need a sensible/practical S3.
It is fast enough but just don't think a 4cyl does it for me, therefore looking at an F-type/Merc AMG of some sort. Did look at an RS6 when the plan was to have just one car but the dealer said it was the quickest way to lose a lot of money so back tracked very quickly.

I grew up with fwd so not convinced me and a powerful rwd car would mix so Cayman/BMWs off the list.

Probably would've been the Leon Cupra 280 for me. Had a mk2 Cupra and it was great. The only other car that took my fancy was a Volvo V40 T5 but the wife decided i wasn't old enough for that yet.

Crikey, I wish my wife would think like that for a change!:(
