Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade from my 2001 A3 turbo to something a little bigger and comfier, and drove a 2005 2.4 V6 A6 saloon last night. Beautiful car, and the right price, but when I got home I started doing a bit of research and its looking like the multitronic gearbox of that era was pretty much plagued with issues, which seem to be crazy money to rectify. When I think back I think there may have been a slight judder when moving off, which seems to be one of the early warning signs of problems. Any opinions? Need to fully check out service history to see whats been done, but seems that the issues can come back. Better off just walking away? Appreciate any input from anyone with more experience than me on this, thanks in advance.

If you do look at a car with Multitronic (note that box was only used on front wheel drive, quattros all have Tiptronic) make sure there is clear evidence that the fluid has been replaced without fail every 40k miles. If there is no evidence then walk away. Also be aware that the Multitronic car will never deliver anything like the promise in terms of fuel consumption. Manual and Tiptronic are much better in that respect

These gearboxes have two most popular defects
1. if car is juddering when slow accelerate there is problem with clutches (clutches change about 1200 EUR)
2. there can be problems with gearbox control unit ( price about 800 EUR) but it can be repaired in Germany ( 150-200 EUR can't remember)
From my experience I say that manual gearbox or tiptronic is better choice.

Thanks all, service history checked out ok and got a good deal so bit the bullet. Fingers crossed all stays ok anyway.
