hello everyone -
got a problem with the display / workings of my heater / ventilation controls -
and it's definitely not the right weather for them not to be working :(-
1996 1.8 petrol SE Auto Audi A4 -
the display is getting more and more erratic - sometimes on - sometimes off -
(can sometimes bring up the display with a hard knock on the side of the unit) -
and same with the heating / ventilation - sometimes on - sometimes off - doesn't matter which button gets pressed -
any ideas on where to start a repair? bearing in mind i'm just about a 2 spanner haynes man :)
all comments - thoughts - similar experiences - much appreciated -
cheers
edoh

Thanks Aragorn -
Good place to start - I've got the Kris Hansen Tech article on Climate control head fix - so I can get to the back of the unit and check the harness connectors - my limited skills aren't up to soldering on circuit boards / checking continuity on the ribbon cable.
Where might be a good place to try and get hold of another control unit?
thanks again :icon thumright: edoh

yep - the climate control unit has completely given up the ghost - no display - no hot or cold air - nada -
checked the harness connections at the back - all fine -
started having a look round ebay - lots for sale - but with one digit or one letter different from mine -
the back of my unit says - 5HB 006 500 - 11 8D0 820 043 H
the only one i could find with the exact same code is for sale in Germany - for big squids -
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A4-B...211746827?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item2ed9279a0b
should i pursue? or try more local (cheaper?) scrappies?
any thoughts?

8D0820043H is the correct and only part number according to the catalog, they changed in 1997 for the later models.

thanks so much for this -
thinking i might go down the reman route - nearly a ton - but takes the guesswork out of how good the second hand ones on ebay are -
thanks again -

I'm sure you could get it repaired for much cheaper than a reman. Try contacting someone who repairs cluster lcds and stuff, it'll be a piece of cake for them.

hey- thanks for the heads up about that route -
any ideas where i could look to find such a contact?
cheers - edoh

ouch! 10 days and 63 pound 60 pence later - reman return the climate control unit saying it's faulty and can't be repaired! double ouch! I've got one of those plug in cigarette lighter stick on windscreen ring fans - but they hardly do anything -
keeping an eye on a german/american/ ebay cc unit - same model number - but talking close to 200 squid -
any cheaper alternatives/ ideas - anyone can come up with?
before the icy weather kicks in :audibash:?

another option could be too see if you can find a facelift single din and fit that? It will be a bit of work (wiring) but it's doable, and should be able to pick everything up for less than 200 sheets.

If you're interested in doing the facelift conversion,I have a complete unit from my w reg tdi (single din) for sale,I can supply the wiring plugs and some loom too.It was my own car so I know the unit is 100%.
Let mre know if you're interested
