I did a forum search, but was unable to find a thread with pics on how to remove/re-fit seats in an A3. As I was swapping my half leather for full leather today, I thought I'd take some pics and write a guide. I hope people will find this useful.

Please excuse the crappy phone pics. I didn't realise they were so bad until I'd finished and got them on the computer. Anyway, here goes.

Tools
10mm Spline Bit and Socket Set for front seat removal
T30 Torx Bit set for rear seat removal
11/16" (17mm will fit too) Socket and wrench for seat belt bolt removal/replacement

Fronts

Here are my original seats. I removed my rears first and then got a mate to help me take the fronts out later in the morning. The front seats aren't massively heavy, but a bit awkward to get out on your own without damaging something.

For the purposes of this guide, I'll do it in order and I'd advise removing the fronts first as it will give you more room to do the rears.

First job is to remove the bolts that hold the front seats in place. Slide the seats either fully front or back to reveal the spline bolts which you need to undo as shown below. Slide the seats the other way to undo the other two bolts. There are two at the front and two at the rear.

Once you have undone all the bots, tilt the seat back to reveal the cables underneath. The cables are in a cover which will need to be removed. There are two plastic hooks under the yellow circles. To remove, get your fingers under the area circled in red and pull up towards the roof. It will pop out and then you can slide the cover off freeing the hooks.

With the cover off, you can get at the cables. Disconnect everything. The amount of cables will vary depending on driver or passenger or heated etc. You'll also need to open the cable tidy in the far left of the picture. It's a bit fiddly, but it's just pushing in a very small clip.

Once you've freed the cables, carefully pull the seat out of the car. You have to do it at an angle and I would suggest removing the head rests as it makes it a lot easier to get the seat out.

To fit the new seats, simply reverse the process. Connect the cables, re-fit the cable cover. Align the runners to the holes and bolt down. Re-fit head rests and ensure it all slides around and adjust correctly.

Front seats in :)

Rears

First off, you need to remove the bench seat. I found this to be the hardest part as it feels like something will break and unfortunately for me it did. Should be a cheap fix though.

You can see in the picture below that the leather and carpet are seperate parts and the bench part should lift up. It requires quite a bit of force, but start from one side of the seat and lift up and move along bit by bit from one side to the other. The bench part of the seat is held at the front by two metal rings that fit inside two plastic clips.

The seat belt clip circled in red will need to be removed later.

IMG_1990.jpg

The metal rings on the underside of the bench fit inside grey plastic clips in the sub-frame that should just pop out. Unfortunately one of mine got stuck and pulled the clip out of the sub-frame which damaged it. I then had a hell of job trying to seperate the clip from the ring. Heopfully you won't have this issue as the other side popped off with no damage.

IMG_1998.jpg

Once you have released the front, push the whole bench towards to back of the car and you will feel it release the from the hooks holding it in place. The whole bench should then come out.

IMG_2004.jpg

Fold the seats down and open the boot. Take out the boot liner so that you can see the black clip in the picture.

IMG_2002.jpg

Finger hurty time! There are clips holding it on roughly where I've circled in red, so get your fingers in the holes marked in green and pull the sides apart with a little force to release it.

You will then see a small torx screw circled in red which will need to be undone in order to remove the metal plate circled in blue.

IMG_2001.jpg

Once removed, you will see the two plastics discs which hold the two seats together and allow them to fold down as circled in red. In the picture I have already removed the smaller of the two rear seats so only one disc is shown. From here you will be able to lift one side of the seat out. The other side is fixed by a small pole that goes inside the opposite side of the seats. You should be able to slide the seat off of this pole and lift it out of the car.

IMG_1993.jpg

To remove the other larger rear seat, you will first need to remove the seat belt shown earlier that is secured to the sub-frame via a bolt.

Lift up the felt protection to expose the bolt. You will need the socket set to undo that bolt and once freed, you can lift the whole seat out of the car.

IMG_1997.jpg

Job done! To re-fit the new/relacement seats, simply reverse the instructions above. Get the seat belt lined up and bolt it down first and the rest should be easy.

If anyone has any questions. Please feel free to PM me.

Good luck.

Thanks for that,I've added a link in the stickies FaQ's

No worries. I should say that there are no air bag errors/warnings as long as the ignition is switched off during the whole process. As long as you don't turn the ignition on with the seats disconnected there should be no issues.

Thanks to Ash for the information above

Thanks for the comments guys. Just edited my original post to include the missing tool sizes.

In case anyone is interested, or has a go at this and breaks a rear seat gromit like I did (as above) the part number for replacement gromits is:

8E5 886 373

They are 80p each plus VAT.

I've just installed the front seats, followed the the guide step by step but I have got the air bag light up on the dash now. I switched off the ignition & checked the connections & they're all good...what must I do now?

Same here, I did the install with the ignition off, turned it on once complete and I have an airbag warming light on.
The passenger seat that I took out had two wires/connectors however the half leather sline front passenger seat that I have installed only had one with the yellow connector. My car is a 55 sport and the sline interior is out of a 2007.
Any ideas anyone?

All sorted, had to strip the seat occupancy sensor and seat belt sensor from the old seats and put them on the new one.

My new interior has arrived, hopefully it all goes smoothly. This page will be my bible. Do you disconnect the battery?

No, just keep the keys out of the car LOL (so you don't turn it on by mistake) :)

Regarding seats, I want to replace seatbelt connector on drivers and passangers seat - are there any photos of how to do that? Also I would like to replace plastic bottom of the seat (part that goes near the door) on both seats... Any help appreciated.

Have managed to change the back seats, it is really fiddly in parts but once you know how it's all assembled it gets easier.

I'd suggest removing all the baby seat covers and then refit them last, otherwise you just keep knocking them out when trying to put the new base in. The other tricky bit of fitting the base is the hooks on the side, I kept getting them caught on wrong parts of the seat. I think it helps to put the seat to the back and then lower it hopefully catching the hooks.

The above is probably really unclear, but hopefully helps.

I'm still having trouble with my front seats, two of the bolts on the passenger are rounded so trying sort them.
I also have an extra plug on the front seats that aren't on the old ones, can't find out what it might be. Any ideas?

Do you mean the big black plug in the pic? If so, that's the heated seat plug. You've got yourself a set of heated seats there my friend :)

If you can source a 2nd hand climate control unit with the heated seat controls then all you need is the wiring loom and you're laughing.

Excellent, I had a feeling that's what they were but the advert said nothing. Can probably get it from them. I can go and fit them now then!! Well, just the drivers seat, got a couple of rounded screws to sort on the passenger seat.

Cheers

Good write up. I need to remove my passenger front to repair the heating wires, (which a drunk rear passenger managed to rip out with his foot), so this tells me all I needed to know.
:salute:

What you done with your old seats? Think I'd rather have leather/cloth seats than full leather!

Im doing something similar but like 1inchwarrior my new s line leathers only came with a yellow airbag wire... do i need to strip the seat belt and seat occupancy sensor because it's a right pain and i dont have an 8mm spline long enough... my seat belt warning alarm has been turned off by someone using vcds so will i be able to get away with it or will still get warning lights?

Hi I have changed from the 08 170 TDI cloth seats to half leather seats and I have the airbag light coming up in the dash. How do I turn it off? Its been annoying me for days.

Do you know anyone around the Blackburn/Lancashire area that will do this?

Thanks for the guide. I received a S-line leather/perforated alcantara interior yesterday and fitted the sits today. Used this guide and everything went smoothly :) Only door cards remained unchanged, didn't have time for them today. Someone said I need to buy a set of door card clips as they break easy. Can anyone comment on it?

Edit. I see you have isofix plastic covers on the rear seat. I don't have this plastic and didn't have them on my old seats.

Hi all, slightly unrelated but does anyone know which seat base mechanisms are interchangeable? The passenger one in my 09 8p1 A3 has broken and I can’t find any with the specific part number audi has given me 1k3881105ek
Thanks
Rob

Just to clarify what I mean is, can I use a seat base from another A3 of another year or seat style, mine has the S-Line half leather seats but I’ve found others with a the exact same shape seat but different upholstery/year of manufacture.
Will these fit my car and seat?
Thanks
Rob

Should be fine as long as the seats are off an Audi 8P with the same number of doors.

Excellent write up!!

(and pics still work fine for me)

So just to clarify, airbag warning light will come on after a seat swap regardless of whether ignition and/or battery switched off during installation?
