Hello all,

I have my dearly beloved s4. Since buying I have done 2k miles and have only had to resove the usual oil leaks of the top left and right rubber gaskets............well that was until a strange noise started, went away, they came back and stayed.

This is the usual "power steering issues" noise where it whurrs and whines as you turn the wheel whith a constand wurr on tickover.

I had the power steering pump taken out, re built and then put back in, but this hasnt resolved the issue that I can see. the wurring continues, you have to really rev the car to feel the benefit of any power steering and when you look into the rsevoir, its frothing and bubbling so much that it over flows or spirts out of the cap (when its on)

I wasnt sure if the fluid was correct so have had it properly flushed out whilst re fitting the pump.

I have a theory, which a couple of audi specalists have ignored, so I though that I should ask the wealth of knowledge here as my next point of call...................any ideas what is causing the excess bubbling in the resevour and no doubt in the pump causing the noise?

Are you sure rebuilding the pump did anything? You might have just put back the broken part still broken (a valve or seal maybe).

It is a possibility, but the re build was from a reputable company with a years warranty. I'm going to ask them to pressure test the system today to see if there is a leak.

I'll see what other replies come through for other options before removing the pump again.

Sounds like air is getting in the system from somewhere.

Tbh I agree with Adam. The best way is a new pump.

If that doesn't cure it then there is a leak somewhere.

I would make sure there are no oil leaks on the system. If there are any leaks then that could actually be air coming through the system. The bubbling in the reservoir is air and that's what the noise is. Silly question but there is enough oil in the system?

Lack of oil can cause the noise and low power through the system.

top the fluid up above the line and see if the problem still exists
there is a technical service bulletin which states to add more power steering fluid to the system as upto the level
is not enough and can cause these problems
i would also be very wary of holding the lock on these vehicles for more than a few seconds as it can damage the pump quite easilly
