I'm 51 years old and like my comforts. My wife and i only cover about 9K a year and this is mostly touring Scotland, Northumberland, Teesdale and The Lakes. Work is less than a mile from home for us both.

Do you think we would take to the tooth filling loosening jolts of an Sline A3 suspension compared to our current SE A3 ?

Are you saying you wanna change your entire car to the S-Line model or merely a suspension change?

Change to an Sline 1.4T after the wife looked at an S3 and decided it looked the bizz.

S3 is out of our car budget but an sline sneaks in

I'd say go for it if your after a sportier looking car.
If you don't like the suspension drop RobinA3 a note. He tried eibach springs on his, the car was barely any lower but rode far better. Gives you the best of both worlds???

the wife likes the S3... oooh look out... she might ship you for a younger model! ;)

New car? My dad is older than you and he copes fine with his A4 S-Line but that has a slightly longer wheel base. If it is a new car why not try opt for the Magnetic Ride suspension for £700 odd and have the best of both world, they are only available for 1.8T+ though so if you heart is set on a 1.4T then that would be out of the question.

My advise would be go to your local Audi garage, tell them your situation and ask to test drive a S-Line and see how you cope

Not quite certain on the model range of A3's in the UK, but over here there are 3 different suspensions to choose from on the A3; Standard, Sport and S-line (plus the new magnetic ride stuff).
I tested the Standard vs S-line; the Standard felt like riding a sofa on wheels, S-line suspension it had to be. But then I like my suspension hard :) , but I will not offer my grandmother a ride, at least not a very long one.

As others said - go to the dealers and do some testdrives, the difference is very noticeable.

BTW: you should be able to order an S-line but spec it without it's S-line suspension, at least that's available here. Actually, the sales person selling my car asked me several times, just to confirm I really wanted the S-line suspension, and not the Sport, or the standard. And my car is a real S-line with full interior and exterior S-line package.

You'll most probably find the S-Line suspension harsh and basically horrid!

I hated the S-Line suspension as soon as i got the car as it was very bad at taking bumps and small inperfections in the road.

I have now got a set of Eibach springs fitted which give a VERY VERY good ride, in fact i would say it transformed the car!

The springs lowered the car by 5mm so you'll not notice the ride height difference if you are wanting to keep the standard ride height.

I will be selling my Eibach springs mid October as i have got myself some coilovers to go onto the car as i want the car lowered more than the current 5mm.

in fact as you are from south cheshire you can always pop over and come for a ride in mine as i am also in south cheshire.

Robin - If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost to get the Eibach's fitted?

I'd say best to get an extended test drive and see for yourself, it's very subjective. The earlier 3 door slines had shiiiiite suspension, very jarring, but the sportback was a bit better. Oh and comparing the suspension from an A4 s-line just ain't gonna cut it.

Get a test drive, it's the only way.

Thanks Robin.

How did they transform the ride? Do they ride a little softer? Absorb bumps better like the car is damped more softly?

My 52 year old father drives this with no complaints about the ride.

SE is a bit pipe and slippers.

Thanks Robin.

The ride is softer and absorbs the bumps much more, you still feel the bumps not as much. in my opinion its how the standard S-Line suspension should have been in the first place.

Handling hasn't changed which is good.

In a word, No.

The S-Line suspension on the 3-door is terrible, and I would definitely not get another one. The Sportback is significantly better, but still too firm. I think the Sport suspension is probably the best compromise.

The Sport suspension is worse than the S-line. I had a Sportback in Sport trim as a courtesy car and it was all over the place. Firm initially as it hit bumps then bounced all over the place.

S-line is very firm but hardly back jarring. I have been in much much worse!

I put the Abt springs in my sport and have noticed a world of difference. MUCH better.

TFSI mate. If you can stretch to the S-Line I would say DO IT. I wish I had oprted for the S-Line packet as it finishes the car of nicely. Nice and understated.

You don't like the S-Line suspension? You'll loose a good amount of ride quality if you install coilovers. Especially if you go low...

I had the S-Line before and quite liked the "comfort" it gave, after I installed the Weitec Hicon GT coilovers the car transformed totally. Now I really feel the road...roads are pretty bad where I live but you offer some comfort just to get the car as low I have it...

Weitec is one of the softest coilover systems out there (not saying it's the best) but the way I see i really like it...I have gotten used to the way the car behaves now, as I see there are lots of pros and few cons...

Only thing I regret is that I did'nt went for Bilstein PSS10 (or 9). From what I heard it should give the best ride quality on the market...and it's so easy to adjust ecxactly to ones likings....

My dollar...

You only live once mate.
Go get a used S3!

I had an '05 plate 3 door TDI S-Line which was very harsh on it suspension. I got rid of that and have a '58 plate S-Line and actually think the suspension is noticably better - the car is generally a lot smoother on the road but can still get unsettled when going over ridges or more rough surfaces. I am now on my 3rd A3 so have probably gotten used to the hard suspension!

I hate my S Line suspension, I started off liking it but it finds bumps in the road that I never knew existed !

am looking at trading in my clio 172 cup for an A3 S-line 2.0 tdi 140 dsg -

to say the ride is brutal in my 172 cup is an understatement!!

what do you think the S-Lines ride is like in comparison?

It wont be hard in comparison to that. I had a Corsa with 17" wheels and lowered suspension before this A3. Now thats what you call a hard ride! A3 suspension felt soft when I 1st got it :haha:

My 54-year old dad had an A3 S-line and said it was comfortable...I've got one and I find it a bit rough

I suggest you try before you buy! I like the sound of these eibach springs that actually give a better ride  I've never lowered a car before and had it more comfortable - eibachs for me I reckon!!

if you got ebiach springs and had audi fit them would that invalidate your warranty?

If the suspension fails as a result of the springs being fitted then yes.

Otherwise no. Although some dealers would argue that it does!

more the point could you live without fake walnut inserts of the SE and swap them for brushed aluminium of an s-line?

Hi to all

I am in need of urgent help !!! I have recently purchased an A3 Tdi sline 170 3 door fwd 2007. Looking at the car it sits quite high at the rear in comparison to other a3's i have seen ? Not only that the drive is so horrible and bouncy even on level roads. Can anyone please suggest anything why this is so? can it be that the previous owner changed rear dampers and springs to some basic ones?. Any feed back will be appreciated. Thanks

Holy thread revival!

Firstly I'd check the rear springs, I've heard of a few people who have taken there car to a garage to get them changed and they've replaced them with the wrong ones.

Any idea of the part numbers or the colour codes for the sline springs ?Thanks

Isnt there Sline normal which is soft and the non cost option of Sline sport which is hard as? My Sline is a softer ride than my fiancées Sport and a damn sight softer than my mothers Sline with the Sline sport suspension option ticked

It's all about taste and what you want. My 3.2 is an S-Line but it sits about S3 height on whatever springs it has. I wouldn't call it uncomfortable by any means and would probably describe it as a solid car on the road.
I ran a TDI Sport before that and the 3.2 is definitely a more comfortable car than that was. It was also about 25-30mm higher.
I'll be 53 on Thursday and I still think there's time for an RS3 or 4 yet.
:D

How much would it cost in total to get the eibach springs fitted?
My wife has mentioned she would prefer not to get another s line as she finds the ride a bit harsh at times.
I'm panicking a bit as the se models just don't look any good compared to s line- although I've seen a few a6 avants that aren't s line that still look really good
