Hi all,

Since it has started to get colder towards Christmas I have noticed my A3 TDI 55/2006 has been starting up a bit rough. It does start up 1st time every time but it sounds like it is firing on 3 cylinders at 1st then after few seconds it sounds fine. Noticed a bit of smoke when 1st fired up in the morning. Any ideas on this?

Thinking maybe a coolant leak which appeared when I 1st got the car I put some K seal in it which sorted the issue out until round now as the tank seems to be drinking a tiny bit. Think I might just flush the whole system and put some more K seal in. VAG - Com is showing glow plug erros on 3 cylinders but forgot what the error code was.

Thanks

I think you've answered your question there....glow plugs.

My old Passat used to blow the glowplug fuse every year when it got cold enough and would do exactly the same as you're describing.

But this shouldn't cause the brief smoke on start up will it?

On a cold day,if the glowplugs aren't functioning correctly, you will get a nice cloud of smoke.

Just put it through Vag com again and it came up with the fault

17055 - Cylinder 1 glow plug circuit (Q10) -P0671 - Electrical fault

The same is for cylinder 2 and 3

Cleared the fault then came back up again after another scan.

When I have reseated the fuses in engine fuse box I removed the errors again and didn't come back up again I turned it over a fair few times as well. Guess it's just see if it pops up again tomorrow. The fuse was a 50amp fuse.

Cheers

Knackered glow plugs will mean difficulty starting and smoke as you won't get complete combustion

Hopefully it's just a wobbly fuse tho!

turn your ignition on...let the lights go out on the hud, then turn it off, turn it on again and start. allows the glow plugs to be hot on a cold start. works well for me
