S3 or Golf R or even an S1?

If I get beat by an R I can blame the weight disadvantage of Mono-Pur
I should be alright then because I've got the stripped out 'no mono.pur' interior ;)

Oh wait, my fat *** will probably effect the performance anyway ...

This made me laugh !

Wow, seeing that thread suggests if nothing else that a few thousand years of evolution haven't really done much to develop the empathy or constructive ness of men driving tin pots. Don't get me wrong, we have plenty of similar scenarios on here too, but if you reflect it back it's like a playground mentality (be in our clique or troll off).

I know it's easy to get all precious about cars as they are a significant personal investment/statement, but cars are just 'stuff', they come and go, personal reputation tends to stick. Amazing how people will choose to behave when they're not face to face.

What shambles of a thread on the R Forum! Come on, Freak On A Leash is Korn not Linkin Park! What are they thinking?? All respect has gone. Haha

It's been a tense period for sure but I think we made through to the other side relatively unscathed

Should give us just enough time to regroup in advance of the inevitable "RS3 vs. R400" thread...

I liked this point lol

 Attracts lots of dicks in Audis who sit on my bumper waiting for something to kick off. It’s not going to happen guys; I am a grown up.

Now I like the look of the R400, and I'd like to think they'll make it, but given previous form with concepts I'm not holding my breath! Personally I found the RS3 (engine aside) to look a bit uninspiring given it's going to whack you in the back pocket to the tune of £50k + (with options). At least the R400 looks like it could do some damage, the RS design-wise wouldn't frighten an agoraphobic pensioner.

I think the fun killer is weight. I've been (don't laugh!) driving a Fiesta Ecoboost Zetec 1.0 100PS round the country for the last few weeks as a hire care and it's the most fun I've had in a car for some years. Hits every corner apex, grips like a limpit, a truly astonishing car, god only knows how good the ST version must be. My car of the year!

I know I've said it before, but the Fiesta ST is such a peach to drive. Really really responsive, lots of grip and lovely to hustle along a country road.

If a car could anticipate your needs in terms of steering, this is as close as it gets ! You almost just have to think the car around the corner, and it does it !

lol I have a Fiesta ST, well it's my wife's to be totally honest, I have only driven it a handful of times to pop to the shop 500 meters away. I think I will swap cars with her for the rest of the week  and give it a good blast. Yesss I'm excited now lol :yahoo:

Yeah, like the W12 Golf it'll probably never make it into production. Shame they couldn't make a limited run as a loss leader.

Lol I was the one who said "freak on a leash" was a good tune on the R forum lol, maybe i didn't explain myself properly, but I am well aware that its a Korn track and not by Linkin Park

I used to be on this forum a lot when I had my a3, more often than not watching by the sidelines. Decided to move to a different car altogether in the mk VII GTD, a very good car, didn't fancy a3 to a3 as I felt id have gone to like for like. Both are very good but i do feel the service with Audi was far superior to that of VW. Made the decision to opt for an R in Sep, PCP deal, hopefully here by March/April.

On a side note, all I can say from being a member of both forums is that there as just as many "fanboys"/bullshitters on there as there is here. "my cars better than yours becausex,y,z" Both can be pretty frickin petty with some absurd comments, both are great cars and people make their own choices but I cant stand such sh*te. But come on, having a look on the R forum then coming on here and b*tchings just pathetic, as much as people on the R forum taking the p*ss out of you guys. There are a few who do it, not all, so try not brand us for being in the "inferior car" because its "considerably cheaper" as someone said on here. Having looked at identical specs, the Audi is at worst £1500 - £2000 more expensive, but then yet again you get leather as standard we don't. Happy trolling people!!!!!!!!!

It would be much easier if we all wear Chairman Mao suits and drive Trabants.

No choice.... Same for everyone. That would cure the bickering. Same old 5hite for one and all.

Or alternatively, learn that your (every one of us) opinions are just that. Opinions.
It doesn't mean its the gospel and you are right and everyone else is wrong.

That should remain the preserve of the dedicated/blinkered football club supporter, or teenage Android/Apple fanboys.

Better off having a bit more wisdom/intelligence :thumbs up:

Spot on soulboy. Lets all just appreciate VAG have made two cracking cars and weve chosen our respective cars for different reasons.

Yes, if you're not in the right gear at the right time in the S3 or R, you'll get smoked ;)

And especially, don't take on a BMW 335D. ;)
Yes but does the Beemer come with mono.pur?

That is very very subjective. I really do not get the obsession people seem to have with Audi quality interiors.
The layout and general look can be subjective but the build quality and materials most certainly aren't and the whole thing is very solid, and that's before you get to mono.pur. Part of an Audi's solidity contributes to accusations of it being harsh to drive. It's a difference in build philosophy. The Golf interior is nice, but once you go beyond skin deep the cracks show. The heater controls are the same as those used in a Seat Leon and you expect better from a car that pretends to be cheaper but isn't. That isn't marmite nor is it envy. It's just the way it is, just as the Golf's ride is superior.

Welcome to the forum.

What's steering you towards the s3 over the R?

How come if you dont mind me asking, cant have had the R for very long?

Number of reasons - dads bought a golf GTD (don't want the same car as my dad!)
Leasegate! Seen 1 too many R's around my neck of the woods (Sutton Coldfield)
The S3 Saloon, IMHO, looks better, better tech, bigger car, 4 rings, brand image, power etc is the same.

The R feels more like a 'boy racer' car to me, the S3 looks a bit of class.

Let them go and laugh at them. Sounds like Golf R drivers will soon enough get the '****' crown rather than Audi ones.

Wishful thinking, but bearing in mind that Clarkson is likely god to these people, until he turns his attention to VW owners, i think that's unlikely.
I'm sure i've seen a difference in attitudes since his comment about Audi drivers being the new BMW drivers. IE. W4nkers...

On the other hand, old Audi's seem to be the vehicle of choice for the eastern European population in my neck of the woods, so might explain the level of driving I've witnessed...

On the actual Golf R issue, I think I've only seen a couple around, & about half a dozen S3's on the go.

I dont blame you, the leasegate scenario is a joke, and as people on the r forum are aware of, youl have the chavs of this world coming from their Corsas etc. Rather infuriating when your paying 415 a month for a damn nice car only to have some chump paying 250 more than likely race you lads in your s3's. I prefer the looks of the R and sold on the reviews, but id be lying if I didnt say I love the clout that comes with the audi badge

I guess it is rather regional. Unless I count the Santa pod meets and helping a few others getting the dtuk box and pedal box on, I haven't come across another R on the road yet. Like today a 250 mile journey and nothing on the road.

Heck I see more of my main family car, Mercedes GL, on the road and that is saying something as much less have been registered. So I guess it all depends where you live.

Lol

That thread is quite amusing. Also had a Golf R driver claiming to have left a Cayman for dust, who "couldn't keep up" and "looked glacial by comparison" :lmfao:

Don't you just love Internet forums !

Sorry v8 - I'm going to have an R owner "moment" and report that my S3 today appeared to be considerably faster than a 14 plate Boxster S. Not "glacial", but definitely a pretty strong advantage in straight line speed.

Was surprised actually........

Nope and not sure - was a bit surprised actually. Damp road mind.

Honda S2000 tried to have some fun today also. That was even easier ;)

Haha good for you. :)

Were you in LC, was theirs a manual?

Quick youtube search suggest S3 and Boxster S have very similar acceleration times. Assuming the one I saw today was a manual and lost some advantage due to the damp weather. Makes sense I think.
