Yep, been there before, plenty of my life has been spent cold and wet under cars on driveways too! Thankfully no longer!

The best bit is not having to clear up at the end of the day, normally a waste of a good hour!
 
Ha ha that always causes a debate with the wife as I have to get everything out, then put it away at the end and never account for it.

'You said you would be two hours, but you've been almost four!'

You would think after ten years of me doing this whilest living together she would have cottoned on by now.

F you have an under tray they can't fail it, as no parts can be removed on an mot! Plus my mate has just been on his refresher course and brought this up (he has a b6 saloon q) and was told the same thing

You can still see the cat on one of these as the under tray is only directly under the engine. There is a gap behind the subframe which you can see up and past to where the cat is.

I'm an mot tester myself but I would be that critical unless it failed the emissions test.
 
I'd be carefull with leaving the second intercooler exposed. Any dirt or debris no matter how small if it where to get inside the engine especially a diesel can potentially cause big damage.

Yep, I'm aware thanks, both ports have thick poly sheet cable-tied onto them for the time being....nothing is getting in!

Get a ghost cat if your that bothered. But I have been told twice now that they will still pass!!

Yeah diesels only have a smoke/particulate test, rather than full gas analysed emissions tests on a petrol car.

The trouble is I would say unless it has a DPF 7/10 times when revved a lot of smoke comes out. This is how the emissions is determined on diesels. The CAT traps the soot or smoke just like a DPF just not as efficiently. When you remove the CAT the soot can still then come out causing failing emissions.

The best thing I can suggest to any diesel car owner weather it has a DPF or just a CAT take the thing for a damn hard drive right before your mot to get everything roasting hot and arrive a few minutes before your scheduled MOT so it gives it a fighting chance of passing. It also generally clears out the exhaust of any potential soot that will fail the MOT!!!

The soot build up is most apparent in cars which potter around town!! It's no good for diesels and only costs more to fix in the long run.

Going back down to 17's I'm considering selling the 18" A5 alloys and getting 4 more of these A5 alloys for summer as I much prefer the ride and the look. Bit of a dish to them! I still have 5 x original 5 spoke 17's in the garage I need to sell on too!! :S

Price on the wheels please dude, tyres as well? If so what are they?
 
Which ones, the A5 18's or the original 5 spoke 17's?

For the A5 alloys I'd be looking for £700 in total, as they cost me quite a few quid and are fitted with £480 worth of Michelin Pilot Sport 225/40/18 XL tyres. Spec: 8.5j x 18", ET29. You can see from my pics how they sit in the arch with the alloy face flush with the bodywork, but without the need for spacers.

They were fitted at the end of March and have covered about 4,000 miles. Pretty sure they have about 5-6mm of tread but I will need to check obviously. They have a few curb marks, even with the large rim protection the tyres have. The tyres were sized to keep the rolling radius for a B6 A4, and the stretch keeps the tyres away from the arches on standard sport suspension (with front B5 perches). I did find that my old shot rear dampers and mounts allowed some rubbing, but once they were replaced they stopped rubbing. This was only with 3 adults in the rear of the car mind. No centre caps but they are the common A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7 and A8 ones. Ones from the Q series cars are slightly different. I got a set for £20 on fleabay...

If its the original Sport 5 spoke 17's you are after, set of 5 all in good nick, 3 x pirellis, 1 x continental and 1 x arrowspeed spare, all with 4.5-5mm of tread afaik. £350. 4 centre caps. Normal offset 43 or 45 I think.

P.S. You'll need some spigot rings for the A5 alloys as the CB is 66.6mm not A4 57.1mm. I transferred mine onto my new alloys. I'd recommend metal ones not the plastic ones as they don't last very long.
 
Thanks Rob for the info, might be a bit steep price wise before Xmas, I'll give you a shout next month once/if the wife stops buying things....
 
New wheels on, something more suited to carrying round 2 little 'uns and my other half. Much softer ride but they don't feel as sporty. The 18's had Michelin PS3s and the grip was phenomenal, wet and dry, yet the Pirelli P7s and Bridgestones that are on these are nowhere as good in the wet. They are on 225/50/17 which is slightly too big for the car but the arches are better filled Especially with 7.5j ET28. Once they wear out I'll get some more Michelin's in the proper 235/45!

After collecting parts over the last month or so I've finally got around to fitting an A4/A5 steering wheel and cruise control.

Single stage airbag compatible with my airbag controller (according to a friendly Audi tech).
