Jumped im my car today just to move around the drive all was well car was beautiful...

Then this evening came took it out all gears are smooth fine apart from reverse ...

It seems i can push the gear stick into reverse gowever it is much tighter than normal and it feels like it wont go in easy, as above the other gears are smooth

In Reverse engine running......
Once it is nearly it the reverse light comes on and when up to the bite the engine is trying against something but the car does not move forward or backwards and also if the hand break is of and clutch to the floor and the gear is in reverse the car wont roll up or down hill....

Kind of like when you are parked with the engine off and in gear and handbrake off and the clutch up ie. The gears are stopping the car from rolling

Ill have a look later again anyone had issues like this before ???
Cheers

Sounds like you might need to bleed your clutch if your in gear with the clutch peddal down and the car is not rolling then the clutch must still be engaged you might have a dodgy slave seal that's seeping slightly allowing you to choose gears but not disengaging the clutch enough so you can roll or chose reverse as that gear is the highest on the selector drum in the gear box.

Ok sweet thats making sense ill have a chat at the garage tomo and go from there ill mention this also thanka for the feedback... if i have a dodgy slave seal or clutch fluid leak would it be able to drip to the ground ?so i could see it ? Or is it viewable from under the car ?? (I was unaware we had a hydrolic clutch) thanks

If the slave is leaking you won't see it as it is inside the clutch housing the only way you could tell is by looking at the brake res if the fluid level is dropping then it has to be leaking some were as the brake res supply's the hydrolic clutch. By any chance have you changed the brake pads recently as if the fluid level droped below the tube for the clutch while bleeding and you touched the clutch peddal by mistake then you might have air in the clutch line that would cause your problem.

No i havent touched anything with brakes at all last time i checked fluids i did everything but the brake fluid ill have a look in the morning and see what level it is. If it is low is what fluid would u recommend i personally will probs go to the dealers for the corre t fluid unless anyone knows a sutable substitute ? And also is it worth topping it up and then pumping the brake pedal with cap off to bleed the air out (if any) and then test reverse again ?? Cheer for the help i do apprieiate it

You would need dot4 brake fluid you can get it at halfords topping it up and pumping the pedal won't bleed the system you need to open the bleed nipple on the gear box housing were the clutch fluid pipe goes in to the gear box you will also need a mate to slowly press the clutch pedal as you open the bleed nipple or it will let air in to the system if you don't feel confident enought to do it then I would recommend taking it to a garage. Take it to a independent garage not to a dealership as they will charge the earth. A garage should be able to bleed the clutch in about half an hour if that's the problem if the slave is leaking then I'm sorry to say but the gear box will have to come out to replace it and you may need a new friction plate because if fluid has leaked on to it then it will be no good.

Ok thanks again im off to thw garage in about an hour ill mention this to them so before they send of for a reconditioned gearbox ill ask them to inveatigate the clutch and potetially bleed it and checl the slave cylinder .... thanks for taking the time to help ... nothing worse than issues like this around christmas !!!

Update...

Went in the car this morning and long story short it is now 1st gear thats an issues and reverse is fine .... also gearbox is tighter than usual ??? Would it be the tranfer out of allignment as the physical gears are ok or linkaging ? Thanks

Still sounds to me like clutch I very much dout that the gear box is at fault as it is built to last also I wouldn't of fort it was the linkage unless you have put a aftermarket cone shape air filter in and the linkage is catching on something. Do this little check jump in the car start it up pump the clutch pedal quickly afew times and hold it down and try changing through gears if you have a slight leak or air in the line pumping the pedal quickly should compress any air and give you a clean gear change for a moment or two. Sorry for the late reply work been busy this morning.
