I have just switched to my winter wheels and noticed when taking my good wheels off that there was some bad wear on the inside edge of 3 of them.

OSR is undamaged.
They were band new Nankang NS2 fitted 6 months ago. The tracking (four wheel) was done by a trusted place at the same time.
Don't worry about the deep gouge on the sidewall of the NSR, that happened when it popped off the rim and I drove for about half a mile on the sidewall.

All four are 225/40/18, the fronts are on 8.5j and the tears are on 9.5j. The car is as low as a set of Vmaxx coilovers will go.

Should I go and get my tracking re-checked or have I got another problem, or is this normal milage wear on 3 of them?

Cheers!

I've just had a closer look at the NSR, it has lumpy or wavy wear, is this indicative of shock absorber issues? There is -2.5 degrees of camber on the rears (set by the tracking shop)

Looks like ur stretching the tyres to there limit to me. I could've wrong tho!

Do you give it lots of stick on roundabouts? I've had wear because of this.

I just don't get why people put rubbish tyres on cars. Its probably the most important bit of the car when it comes to handling and safety.

I have been very happy with the nankangs. Sure they are a budget tyre, but they are really quite good for grip. If I could afford a £500 set of continentals, I would certainly have them. For me it was a case of finding a healthy balance between cost and quality, at £230 these did that perfectly.

False economy though if they're wearing prematurely?

Wearing prematurely due to technically wrong fitment. And 10000 ain't too bad when you are an enthusiastic driver

The tyre wear is due to you running the car really low. You will have excessive camber on the fronts, any small amount of toe will mean the inner edges will be scrubbing all the time.If you look at the front of the car you will probably see the tops of the tyre tip in compared to the bottoms.

The NSR tyre should be binned, the sidewall is damaged on that tyre, I would have thought the fact that it "popped" off the rim would have told you something. A 225 tyre on a 9.5 inch rim is too much of a stretch and it isn't safe.

Karl.

Many thanks for the replies! It looks like I have to accept that I've had my money's worth out of them :) I am planning on putting on a new set when I put the good wheels back on in the summer. I think it may have popped off the rim because the pressure dropped in the cold. 9.5j is actually the maximum size Nankang recommend for a 225/40/18.

In case it wasn't clear, I toke them off the car with in intention of binning them all, I posted to make sure I don't have a tracking/suspension issue.

You adjusted the suspension at all since having the wheel alignment done?
Do you run OE tyre pressures (as taken from the sticker in the fuel flap)?

Also 2.5degree of camber I'd say is too much (if the car is a daily and the owner expects even tyre wear) and will be contributing to the excessive wear on the inner edge, though the camber may be required due to huge wheels/ridiculous ride height.

Yeah I run 2.2 bar at the front and 2.0 bar at the back. After it popped off, I check the remaining 3, they were all at 1.8 bar, so I think the pressure may have dropped in the cold.
Suspension hasn't been touched since the tracking.
I think I'll put the wear down to mileage and 'ridiculous ride height' ;)

I'm sure that the oe tyre pursues are higher than that? In the 40psi region I think.

Really? I think I had better look into that then! Presumably the pressure for 18s is going to differ from the quoted pressure on 16s?

I can't say for definite as I no longer have an A3 but if I remember correctly they are up around 40psi as even I thought that was high for a little hatchback.

I'd say the pressures will differ due to different tyre construction/sidewall stiffness etc.

Someone will be along to post the exact tyre pressures

I have same issue with mine, goes through tyres like no tomorrow but only on the inside edge. (fronts)

I had new coil overs fitted and 4 new tyres, i then had 4 wheel alignment and tracking done. Checked my tyres other day and threads are showing on inside but the outside still has around 3-4mm.

This is on Goodyear tyres aswell, did the exact same on old tyres which were budget.

I do intend on getting back in touch with the guy who did the alignment and see what he has to say, i will keep you updated.

That looks very much like the tyre has been wearing on the coilover adjuster? What offset are the wheels?

Good thinking Batman ^

I will need to check the clearance on mine aswell.

There is no doubt his alignment is out but I suspect he has this issue too. Mines very close with only around 5mm between the tyre and adjuster.

That your car above yes?

What coilovers are they, and details on wheel/tyres used?

No that was just an example image I could find. I had the same issue on a Bora I had so I always check on all my cars. My A3's on weitecs and ET48 - 8.5J - 19's and as I say at my ride height it's very close. Mines not "slammed" either.

I don't think so, I will check on the weekend though. The adjusters are at the bottom, so they are well below the tyre wall lol.
They are ET42.

The grove very much looks like they are.

I just re read your comment, I miss read it the first time lol. The groove is only on the OSR, the other 3 are fine. The rears have a separate who and spring, so it won't the the adjuster.
The groove happened because the tyre popped off the bead and I drove on it until I could pull over.

Thanks for the input though!

Hi bentwenty,

What are your thoughts on the Nankang NS-2R tyres?

I was considering getting some of these for track day use, as they appear to be one of the very few options for a track day-spec tyre that is 92Y rated.

I could find too many reviews, but from what I could find they sounded pretty decent; and it sounds like you've given them a fair bit of abuse over quite a few thousand miles! :)

Hi, I've not tried the NS2R. These were the NS2, for the price I paid, I think they did pretty well. I suspect a more expensive tyre probably would have lasted about as long (but I could be wrong). Dry grip was unexpectedly good, but wet grip was definitely below average, although it was never a problem.
For a better review of the NS2R, have a look at http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/
