Hi all,
Recently baught a beat up a3 (2002) mk2 1.6 petrol think its the 8l, the clutch is pretty much shot on it so just ordered a new one and the car seems to be quick ish bottom end but run out of steam at top end,so thinking of putting the 1.8 gearbox on it whilst doing the clutch,is this possible and if so wich model would i need to get the box from, thanks

Dude... you have a 1.6... lots of steam isn't really a word I would associate with it... fitting a 1.8 gearbox with potentially taller gears will only slow you down further as its not got the power to pull the skin off a rice pudding mate I'm afraid... small engine, heavy car...

Love this reply. No beating around the bush with Tuffty.

Ok thanks for the advice, im not so bothered about accelaration but more top end as i do quite a lot of motor way miles so would be nice to have a bit more up top for when i need it

tbh mate I think you are chasing something that just won't realistically make a difference... VAG chose the ratios you have to get the best out of the engines performance... making your gears taller won't necessarily mean you will get more top speed as you still need power to get you there... all you may end up doing is reducing your ability to nip out to overtake a truck or something and this slower acceleration may do you more harm than good if trying to get out into middle lane traffic...

Ye thats makes sense really, was just an idea whilst i would have the box off changing the clutch but guess the old saying "if it aint broke dont fix it" applies here lol

I could always add a go faster stripe and see if that helps! Lmao

I drive 60 to 140 miles a day in my 1.4tdi A2 as a commute... the majority of this mileage is on the motorway so fully appreciate where you are coming from... however I have found sticking to 65mph in the inside lane not only saves you from having to battle with all the other idiots on the roads but gives better MPG too... my A2 is a lowly 75ps but has a decent lump of torque so I can get to 70-80 pretty quickly if I need to pull out a bit sharpish behind a truck... doing 65mph also means you are not constantly pulling out all the time as you catch trucks up... try it sometime... its liberating :)

I have taken my S3 to work a few times and tbh I stick at 65mph in that too as having to constantly change lanes, braking, speeding up again etc just ****** me off so much I am just annoyed all day at work...

You also find you get the motorway to yourself for large chunks as the faster traffic goes past in waves while you amble up to the next truck

I do that quite often especially in the mornings,it might sound stupid my train of thought was with the 1.6 box doing 70mph it sits at around 3.5/4k revs, so what i was thinking was with a 1.8 box it might do 70mph with less revs and ther for save more fuel if that makes any sense

you would use more fuel getting there is the issue.... slower acceleration... your existing box will be fine (said in the voice of Obi Wan)

I have the same 1.6 a3 and done the clutch on mine when I brought it I put in a uprated clutch kit but didn't really see any difference I think its quick enough nippy when running round town and onece I get the revs up in 4th on the motorway it cruses in 5th with the car fully loaded but I think I will get a 1.8 when its time for a change.

The clutch in this one is completly ********,its starting to slip and its a real struggle trying to keep it steady on the bite point when sitting in traffic, dont think thers many miles left in it and id rather change it before it goes, went with the standard oem clutch as used uprated before and not made much differance

Clutch is a easy enough job to do make sure you do the bearing at the same time when I pulled mine out it fell apart in my hands so worth doing

Ye i always replace bearings even if they seem ok,ther cheap enough and can only help your motor

Also might be worth doing the timing belt and water pump while your at it you can never tell how the cars been treated over its life. I have been over my engine with a fine tooth comb and spent a small fortune getting the car mechanically sound well to my high standards all I have left to do is service the injectors.

Tbh the engine is the only sound bit on the car(minus the clutch) i also always do a full service and belt and pump change whenever i buy a car,iv found most people will tell you any thing to sell a car so never take ther word for it!

Yeah tell me about it when I brought mine I was told everthing was fine I spotted a few things when I was having a look over it that I pointed out to the bloke but they were easy fixes. Later found out when I got it up over 70 it was draging to the left cos of a bent track rod all 5 wheels were buckled head lights were short wired from the side lights, wheel bearings were shot and a long list of other things but now i have sorted everything out have nearly got a new car as my mates keep saying but its a cracking car well worth the money spent.

Mines beat up on the outside,(not one panel is straight!) so will need a lot of work on that and a respray but can do it all myself so should keep cost down
