Hi all,

Found a slight oil leak on my cam cover, cant find any threads on how to remove & replace the cam cover. I've done it before on other cars but opening the bonnet to my APY S3 and taking off the black engine plastic it just looks like a sea of pipes and i dont want to mess things up by doing it wrong.

Can anyone help?

Cheers

Will

If I were to simply unplug all that n249 stuff to make removing the cam cover easier does it go back together with no issues, fault codes etc? And from that I assume the cam cover comes off and back on just as any other vehicles ?

you will need a full gasket kit i believe there is an outer, inner & half moon thats sits near the cam tensioner all prone to leaking on higher mileage cars.

It happens on low milers too, I did mine in 2007 on 46k miles myself. Bit tricky if you've not done anything like this before, took me 4hrs, could probably do it in 1hr now.

Does anyone have the part codes to hand for the gasket and half moon sections mentioned above as I need to replace mine asap?

Cheers

just get a rocker cover gasket set from GSF...
its obvious once you get into it what needs removing..
be careful not to drop the nuts down where the cam belt lives as that will take the simple job to another level.

I also need to do this, is there a sealant needed?

Cheers had a look at this and will order the parts mentioned. Very useful link to a guide in there. Could perhaps be added to the list of links in the How To's sticky??

Vrbob- did you use any sealant as well as the gaskets?

Also can you just remove the rocker cover gasket without needing to remove the cam chain adjuster one or is it necessary to do both at the same time?

Reckon it's worth getting the camshaft retaining tool off eBay for 8 quid if doing it on your own?

this is the sealent I used as advised in the guide I linked to HYLOMAR UNIVERSAL BLUE GASKET AND JOINTING COMPUND - 40GRM | eBay

I didn't use a cam tool and did the job on my own. I found that I could remove the cam tensioner gasket and half monn easily by undoing the 3 bolts hoilding the cam tensioner in position and then slowly undoing a few of the bolts (don't remove) that are revealed under the rocker cover as this allowed near the tensioner as this allowed to lift the tensioner using one hand and slide out the old gasket and remove half moon seal. reverse process to install new stuff (don't forget to use sealent) tighten everything up and jobs a good one and a nice oil leak free engine :)

How long did you have to leave the sealant to set before starting the engine? Or didn't you?

The sealent is stuff that never dries so wont dry out.

Once the car was all back together started straight up :)

Been a while but could a leak show up as smoke from the back of the engine (turbo area) A3QTS. Usually only happens when the car is pushed hard.

Yeah, mine was from turbo area usually upon start / warm up but also after pushing it hard.
To rule it out I'd replace the cam cover gasket anyway. Most likely is the cause though!

Good to hear that, was starting to worry my turbo was playing games, reckon I might paint the top of im going to do the gasket.

Yea go for it, or source a second hand one and paint it before and just do a straight swap so as not to have to leave the car without a cam cover whilst painting.

That's a sound idea, cheers. Have a long list of stuff to work through at the moment.

Rear disks, bleed brakes and clutch, thermostat, fans, aircon, cam cover gasket, top mounts, RUST being the worst thing. Then maybe worry about some performance stuff.
