A3 wipers stop working (NO HIDS)

Mates wipers gave stopped working in his A3, there are no hids in the car, just standard halogen bulbs. The wipers won't lift at all, but the motor can be heard.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

He can't drive the car and it's raining tonight.

Someone must have had a similar problem

Linkage problem maybe? Open the front panel and look?
Worth a go

+1 sounds like it, although I've never had it - surely your mate has tried this already though?

No only happened earlier today so he's checking it tomorrow

Motor sprays screen wash on the windscreen but wipers won't move
