As the thread title suggests I have a BRD engine with BorgWarner BV43 turbo. Been pricing up brand new replacements and refurbs.

One supplier swears blind there is a garret turbo that will fit the PD170 but Ive been told by every other supplier that there is no direct garret replacement.

Can anyone advise and even if there is a direct replacement is it a good or bad idea?

Regards
Steve

I wouldn't have thought there would be a direct Garret turbo swap because of the actuator position sensor.
I fitted a BV43 onto my 1.9 Passat TDI 130 and it was a direct swap bolted on with no issues other than the turbo outlet connection is different which wasn't an issue as I was fitting a FMIC so the BV43 was better,210bhp and 345 Lb/ft when it was mapped.
You could bolt on a Garret PD130 turbo onto a BRD and it would fit but you wouldn't have the actuator position sensor that the car needs unless you took the actuator off the BV43 and fitted it to the Garret which wouldn't be impossible.
I didn't need that on my Passat as the ECU doesn't use that feedback and just needs a vacuum operated actuator.
I would just go for the BV43 there are plenty on Fleabay

You can buy cheap CHRA assemblies off Fleabay and I am not sure what some of the remanufactured parts are done with , could be people are just replacing the CHRA with a cheap Chinese one and passing it on. The quality isn't as good as an original how would you expect it to be at this price.
