It has been a while since I had a chance to go on a drive/ride just for fun. When I had my motorbike a few years ago a rideout was a weekly affair but since having a kid and getting a mortgage, the bike had to go... Anyway... In these days of pricey fuel and everything else does anyone go for a drive for no reason other than to just enjoy their car and explore the local roads? If so, what's you usual plan of attack? Do you pick a destination and go or is there more planning involved?

Yes. With me there is really no planning involved. I just get in my
car and go for a ride. I find that it relaxes me. It kind of makes things
feel less stressful.

I finish at 10pm quite often and living in Wales there's a few lovely mountain roads to chose from to get home.

There used to be many people who did it on Sunday afternoons and got a bit of a stigma for doing it!

Yes & most drove Rover 75's lol

With a caravan in tow, no doubt :)

I stumbled across a couple of "driving roads" sites and was thinking of doing a few trips with the aim of experiencing what some of them had to offer... Ideally without the family. Here's hoping for an opportunity some time soon :)

Lol.

Plus if you used to get behind a guy wearing a flat cap or trilby, then you knew it would be a long journey!

Yep, used to do it all the time - when I still lived at my parents.
Living 30 minutes from North Wales helps too... horseshoe pass was our stomping ground.
We would often be there two or three times a week - I was in college, worked part time, had my Fiesta Zetec 1.25 - pocket money mods (lowering springs, good tyres, strut braces.etc) - front tyres every 3 months!
£20 in fuel money collectivley was a good night!
Was a good few years, as we all got full-time work, the cars got better... I bought my Ibiza Cupra 1.8T and a friend bought a Passat 1.8T, we flew round those roads.
That was only 5 years ago!

Now we have all progressed a little, a few of us have mortgages, work longer hours and away from home.etc we only manage to get out as a group once or twice a year.
We try to do it properley when we do though!;

I bought a Honda CBR earlier in the year and not managed to get out half as much as I would have hoped!

Nice! That is only a relatively short drive from the EVO Triangle!

Yep, down the Horseshoe Pass into Llangollen - then out of Llangollen towards Bwets-y-Coed...

Plenty of cracking roads - triangle being the most talked about, I reckon there will be average speed cameras up within a few years.
Rewarding roads but its curtains if you get it wrong - there is a massive drop just off the horse-shoe pass, if you go over then its game over - no questions.

Yeah, I Googled 'Horseshoe Pass' and one of the first results was "Horseshoe Pass crash: two killed and one ..."
