Hey guys, I know this should be on the detailing thread but I feel like it's a little quiet and i'm sure theres people on this thread that know a thing or two!

Basically I need some help on what products are meant to be like each other, I want 2 products that get out scratches (a course cutting compound) and one like T-cut that restores paintwork/gets out minor swirls which obviously isn't t-cut because it's terrible.

So:

Is Autoglym Paint Renovator the same as Megs Ult Compound & T-Cut?

Also: I found Megs Scratch X which I believe would be best on scratches in general, is this correct or does Autoglym Paint Renovator do all of these?

Just needing some advice on what to use... I would prefer to use Autoglym Paint Renovator as i'm a bit of a Autoglym nut.

Cheers! (I have actually asked this question before, somewhere, in many threads ago, to someone so I can't find it haha, i'm sure a lot more of opinions would be better than just one so fire away!)

Never ever use T cut, it's far too abrasive and you'll strip off paint or lacquer. Ideal for inter coat preparation when spraying. Other than that it can be used as metal polish or chuck it in the bin.

Megs scratch X is quite good but I would recommend using their swirl remover, it's nice and gentle.

Autobrite correct it range.
Can get three small bottles heavy medium and fine cutting.
Best used with a machine though

Meguiars products are very good, but if you want to get rid of light swirling by hand can I suggest Menzerna products. These are great as they are reducing cleaners, by that depending on which you buy, the cutting compound within breaks down as you polish so taking out scratches but not introducing new ones. Fantastic stuff. Available on the Bay of e.
Something like Menzerna SF4000 (also called 85RE5) I nice and gentle to start with, apply with a pad nice and flat, buff off with a microfibre cloth. Try to work side to side and up and down rather than a circular motion.

Get onto polished bliss, give them a call and they will explain which compounds to use for machine or by hand. I use the following:

g techniq panel wipe
Menzerna cutting compound sf4000 I think
Menzerna finishing compound
Werkstatt prime / then jett & glos (carbuba - but they do acrylic too)
I would then seal in with something like Zymol Glasur or Swissvax best of show.

I do all my detailing by hand and have a professional do a machine every 12 months or so to remove any swirls i can't quite do.

Hope that helps.

Scratch X is a Meguiars product......

But not for swirls........

J4mmyz. 2 questions! Are you doing the job by hand? And where are you based?

I've been an autoglym nut for years and had always worked by hand. However since getting my new s3 saloon I have taken it up a level! I've bought DA polisher and it will do a far superior job than doing it by hand and I have started to use products other than just autoglym.

It's worth noting that if your going for scratch and swirl remover, make sure you full decontaminate first.
Clay
Rinse
Fallout remover
Rinse
Glue and tar remover
Rinse
Snow foam
Rinse
Two bucket wash
Rinse

Then your ready to correct properly

What would you recommend for removing tar spots from the inside of alloy wheels?
Cheers...

The best product you can buy is auto smart tardis but you can only buy it in big containers and is super strong stuff. It literally burns tar off with little agitation. Autoglym also do a tar remover which is pretty good and can be bought cheaply enough.

Depending on how thick the tar is a good polish can sometimes remove it as well or claying

I'd try bilt hambers auto wheels. It's predominantly an iron remover but will get rid of most tar spots. Alternatively I would suggest claying, start with a softer clay to avoid any risk of scratching. Obviously they would need thoroughly cleaning first.

I find that dedicated wheel cleaners never really get tar off. They're tremendous for making the wheel clean and shiny but you need a tar remover to get rid of the tar from my experience

Thanks for all of your replies, the tar is only small spots inside the rim of the wheels. Certainly not worth claying...

I think it probably depends how engrained they are. My wheels are kept up to on a weekly basis, they're well polished and have a sealant on it so not a great deal gets stuck on to it.

Recently used some glue and tar remover from a company called 'The Car Salon' best tar remover ive used to date. Almost gel like so it sits and breaks down the tar.

Ok thanks, I'll look in the local Halfrauds and see if there are any products, if not I'll order them online.
