Got pulled over today by a lone traffic cop with nothing better to do than ******* me for undertaking, 15 minutes after I conducted the manoeuvre on the M25 in Surrey. **** in a Merc hogging the fast lane for too long so with two lanes free to the left, indicating, mirrors etc I dropped it into S drive and boomed past him, then took the foot off and was cruising with etiquette until pulled over. Apparently, it is now an offence worth £100.00 plus points, as is improper lane use. Anywho, the usual respect/don't argue routine worked and I was let off with the wrist slapped. Part of the reason for being pulled though, was driving the RS3 which is apparently flagged up by road cops as being a vehicle likely to have been stolen/driven at excessive speed, go figure. Ended the conversation with the cop with an overall appreciation of the RS3 and a bizarre piece of advice that it is better to slowly pass on the left, if you have to, rather than do it at high speed, which to me is ********, not that I shared that view. The beauty of the motor is that you can engage in such manoeuvres and be past the point of risk before it has a chance to occur...

One of my pet peaves on the motorway people who lane hog, not just the outside lane but the centre lane.
I am sure there are many people who think when they get on the motorway that the only lane they are going to drive in is the middle lane. Even when there is no traffic at all in the distance they insist on driving in the middle lane. Now to me that is just as bad as undertaking but they are unlikely to get pulled over.
On another note hopefully somebody in a diesel estate will feature less on the police radar :)

Karl

I used to do that but the law seems to have stopped a lot of middle lane hogging,if you drove slowly undertaking someone then surely your at risk for longer ??
He should have just warned you.

Unfortunately the law and logic don't mix. I often do 65mph in the left lane of a three lane motorway passed all of the noddies in the outside lane braking and doing an average of 35mph. They soon peel off into middle and inside lane once they realise they're being retarded. Some don't...which is scary as they are probably lost in Candy Crush... But you're still the bad guy for driving with logic.

Undertaking is unavoidable if someone is going too slow in the outside lane.

For once I think the "road cop" was right, Marcus - can't believe I've just written that... :notme:

I undertake as and when needed :superman: but do so with caution for me and mine and so as not to create agro from the other driver and or observing enforcement patrols.

It's the aggressive driving that'll get you pulled.... :busted cop:

Crikey I undertake all the time in the van have no option though, I'm usually in lane 1 because all the smart ***** are clogging up the middle and outside lanes thinking they can go faster, when they can't.

Same here.
I followed a BMW that was in the outside lane, I was in the left lane up the A1 for 20mins. He only moved over when he wanted to leave at the junction.

So we have , under taking - non funeral type and middle lane hogging , both offences in this day and age.

So what about fast lane hogging ??

Let's just face it, everyone is crap at driving. I'd be all for annual/5 year retests. It would slice the amount of cars on the road, create jobs for instructors, but the government would miss out on fuel tax as 97% of the population would be without cars. It would give the whole green thing, walking/cycling, a push which would help the obese that would in turn help the strain of hefty people on the NHS.

Judderman for PM.

I also agree with the cop btw ... and if I ever have to (after a quick double flash of the lights doesn't work), I will try and cruise past slowly on the inside lane. That way it looks like your not speeding up (or angry) with no sharp manoeuvres. It also makes the point that there was plenty of opportunity for them to have moved over for you too.

I undertake all the time... since I use lane 1 most of the time, I don't feel the need to move from there to lane 3 and back just to go by some dozy *****.

but... and here is the key... I always maintain my speed. I don't put the foot down.

now, if I was overtaking someone and that put me in the lane of opposite traffic, then yes, I slapping the loud pedal and reducing my TED to as little as possible.

for undertaking though... the lane hogger is so far gone, they rarely pose any danger... I actually can't rember 1 time where they have decided to wake up and move lanes as I'm cruising by...

If you don't accelerate to undertake and maintain speed it's fine. At least that's my understanding. Also seems to be what the plod was getting at

Completely take your points about slowly moving passed the lane hogging vehicle/not accelerating to complete the undertaking manoeuvre but a. there were two vehicles in front and therefore twice as unpredictable, b. the middle driver between myself and the hogger may have decided to go for it having seen the opportunity I'd spied, c. very often the knob-end lane hogger will decide to accelerate and prevent you jumping places, d. I'd have flashed him but he was in front of another frustrated motorist driving a much slower car. Ultimately, the cop was in the right and I was in the wrong. The law would have found in his favour but put a bunch of experienced, confident drivers in the same situation, driving an RS3 and I reckon 9/10 would have done the same.

Judderman for PM with good ideas like that, seriously.

Marcus I'd be one of those drivers that would do the same :thumbs up:there's a shocking amount of bad drivers on the roads nowadays and its gonna get worse.

Sadly in this country undertaking is considered illegal. If you do it your breaking the law. Where it is legal drivers expect it and so it's perhaps not dangerous. We ought to abide by the laws of the land. I know how frustrating it is to be stuck behind some ignorant bar steward who doesn't pull back into whatever left hand lane is available.
